Tension Tamer Randomized Control Trial

Smartphone Delivered Meditation for BP Control Among Prehypertensives

This study is 12 months long and consists of 5 visits at baseline, months 1, 3, 6, and 12. To determine eligibility potential subjects will have resting blood pressures (BP) measured on 2 occasions. Pre-hypertensive individuals will be invited to participate in the study. After informed consent is obtained, subjects will complete baseline visit consisting of a survey, resting BP, wear activity watch for 7 days ambulatory blood pressure monitor for 24-hours, collect saliva and urine samples. Subjects will then be randomly assigned to Tension Tamer (TT) or lifestyle education program delivered via smartphone (SPCTL) groups. At the remaining 4 visits subjects will again complete a survey, resting BP, wear activity watch for 7 days ambulatory blood pressure monitor for 24-hours, collect saliva and urine samples. Throughout the 12 months TT group will meditate twice daily and SPCTL group will log physical activity.

Mindfulness Meditation Practice During Hemodialysis

Physiological and Psychological Impact of Mindfulness Meditation Practice on Chronic Hemodialysis Patients

This protocol of meditation is based on mindfulness program proposes to train meditation during the hemodialysis session. The investigators hypothesize that this program offered during hemodialysis session may promote well-being, reduce symptoms of stress and depression reported by the patients, which ultimately may improve biochemical parameters resulting from better adherence to treatment. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of mindfulness meditation practice in patients on chronic hemodialysis, in order to verify if this training can improve symptoms of depression, stress, quality of life and sleep disturbances. Methods: fifty patients will be separated in two groups, twenty five each group, half of them in the control group (CG) and the other half to the intervention group (IG). The patients will be evaluated pre- and pos-protocol.

Impact of Teaching "Meditation Techniques" on the Mental Health and Quality of Life of Medical Students

Impact of Teaching "Meditation Techniques" on the Mental Health and Quality of Life of Medical Students

Studies show a high number of medical students suffering from mental health problems. Although there are several studies investigating how these problems could impact students' life and performance, few studies have investigated interventions to minimize this distress. One of these interventions is the mindfulness meditation, that has already been extensively studied in the scientific literature showing promising results. Nevertheless, there are very few studies which investigated how mindfulness could be implemented as a mandatory course. The present study aims to investigate (1) how students exposed to mindfulness differ from students not exposed to this technique concerning their mental health and quality of life in a short and long term period. This is an intervention protocol using a randomized controlled clinical trial with cross-over, in order to compare if the implementation of mindfulness for first year medical students will improve their mental health and quality of life in the short term (3 months). The intervention group (group 1) will be exposed to mindfulness in the beginning of the medical course and will be compared to a control group (group 2), not exposed to mindfulness (exposed to theoretical classes) for 3 months. After that, the intervention group (group 1) will receive theoretical classes and the control group (group 2) will be exposed to the mindfulness techniques for 3 months (cross-over). Therefore, both groups will be exposed to mindfulness in the first year of undergraduation, however in different moments of the course. Then, these first year medical students (groups 1 and 2) will be compared to another class (group 3), which didn't have this mindfulness mandatory course in their formation. They will be compared after 6 months, 12 and 24 months of intervention (long-term effect).

Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) for Patients With Severe Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) Plus Treatment As Usual (TAU) Versus TAU Alone in Patients With Severe Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a Single Blind Randomized Controlled Longitudinal Study

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition affecting 20 to 25 million people worldwide. Symptoms of AMD includes difficulty in reading, recognizing faces and completing house work which may result in increased disability which in turn increase symptoms of depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety could also be worsened by social isolation caused by AMD. Further, AMD causes high levels of emotional distress and reduced quality of life (QoL). Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) - a standardized category of meditation - may help reduce stress, depression, anxiety, and may enhance QoL. Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) is a class of meditation that helps quiet the mind and induces physiological and mental relaxation whilst the eyes are shut. It utilizes a specific sound value (mantra) to draw attention inward and permit the mind to experience a restful but alert state of consciousness. In the proposed research, the effects of ASTM on health related quality of Life (HRQoL), depression and anxiety in low-vision AMD patients will be studied. A single-center, single-blind longitudinal randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted in London, ON. Patients with AMD (n = 140, 70 in each arm) will be randomized to ASTM plus treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU alone (control) arm. Data on routinely measured ophthalmic clinical variables, HRQoL, depression, and anxiety will be collected from both the arms. Statistical analysis will be conducted using STATA 15.0 to evaluate the effects of ASTM plus TAU compared to TAU alone on HRQoL, depression, and anxiety. Further, for each group - ASTM plus TAU and TAU alone - the investigators develop an association between HRQoL, depression, and anxiety with routinely measured clinical variables using mathematical models.

Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) in Patients With Dry Eye Disease

Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) Plus Treatment As Usual (TAU) Versus TAU Alone in Patients With Dry Eye Disease (DED): a Single Blind Randomized Controlled Longitudinal Study

Patients with dry eye disease (DED) will be randomized to Automatic Self Transcending Meditation (ASTM) plus Treatment as Usual (TAU) or TAU alone to assess changes in Health-related quality of life (HRQoL). HRQoL is a vital construct focusing on impact of health on quality of life. HRQoL data is used in economic evaluations, a component of health economics that compares the cost and consequences of alternative courses of action. This helps policy-makers make complex financial decisions. Along with HRQoL we will measure changes in extent of depression as well as anxiety. Previously published data lacks information of HRQoL in patients with DED. Through this study we shall attempt to correlate HRQoL in this population and assess if ASTM confers changes in HRQoL along with depressive and anxiety symptoms.

Proprioception and Meditation

The Effects of Yoga Based Meditation on Proprioception in Individuals With Parkinson's Disease

In past work is has been shown that yoga can be as effective as a standard balance or Tai Chi protocol; however, there is an inability to distinguish between the mind and body contributions of yoga training. This study will compare an accepted proprioceptive training program to a meditation program which concentrates on body awareness in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

A Pilot Study of Loving-Kindness Meditation for Social Anxiety Disorder

Effect of Mindfulness and Loving Kindness Meditation on Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder

The purpose of this study is to develop and test a mindfulness and loving-kindness based intervention, Positive Affect Training (PAT), to enhance positive affect such as compassion, love, and gratitude and reduce symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD). PAT involves a combination of practicing mindfulness meditation and loving kindness meditation in groups. Although PAT has been shown to be effective for dysthymic disorder, one area that remains unclear is whether the PAT protocol for SAD can address the social anxiety symptoms in Japanese adults with SAD. The goal of the research is to test the initial feasibility and efficacy in increasing positive affect and decreasing negative affect in individuals recruited from the general community who are social anxious. If PAT is also effective for Japanese SAD patients, it could be more cost-effective and noninvasive option to address social anxiety disorder.
