Filter by:Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune neurological disease characterized by the destruction of myelin in the central nervous system, grey matter and axonal loss. The prevalence of neurogenic dysphagia in this group of patients is estimated to be more than 30%. The aim of this study was investigating of Masseter, Orbicularis Oris, Sternocleidomastoid muscles' viscoelastic properties in MS patients with and without swallowing problems.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of a 12-week internet-based exercise and physical activity promotion intervention on physical activity. Furthermore, effects on symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, Physical Activity-related Health Competence (PAHCO), self-concordance and basic needs satisfaction as well as usability and acceptability of the intervention will be investigated.
Sensor-based technological therapy devices may be good candidates for neuromotor rehabilitation of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), especially for treating upper extremities function limitations. The sensor-based device rehabilitation is characterized by interactive therapy games with audio-visual feedback that allows training the movement of shoulders, elbows and wrist, measuring the strength and the active range of motion of upper limb, registering data in an electronic database in order to quantitatively monitoring measures and therapy progress. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of sensor-based motor rehabilitation in add-on to the conventional neurorehabilitation, on increasing the upper limbs functions of MS patients. The training consisting of twelve sessions of upper limb training, was compared with twelve sessions of upper limb sensory-motor training, without robotic support. Both rehabilitation programs were performed for 40 minutes three times a week, for 4 weeks, in addition to the conventional therapy. All patients were evaluated at baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks of training (T1)
Background: Pre-eclampsia, defined by the association of an arterial hypertension and significant proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation, complicates 1 to 2% of pregnancies in France. Its pathophysiology involves angiogenesis impairment, upregulated maternal systemic inflammatory response, activation of oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. In a recent Danish nation-wide cohort study, pre-eclampsia was associated with a 69% increased risk of later developing scleroderma. Type of study: prospective observational case-control study. Primary objective of the study: to determine if a history of pre-eclampsia before systemic sclerosis diagnosis is an independent risk factor for vascular phenotype in sclerodermic women. Secondary objective: to describe all risk factors for vascular phenotype in sclerodermic women with a previous pregnancy longer than 6 months before scleroderma diagnosis.
In this study researchers want to learn more about the medication usage behavior among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients treated with BETASERON using the myBETAapp. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the covering called "myelin" around the nerves of the central nervous system degenerate. MS is a lifelong disease therefore requiring continuous treatment to delay the disease progression and reduce the rate of relapse (the return of signs and symptoms of). BETASERON is an approved medicine used to reduce the relapse in patients with MS. It is injected into the tissue under the skin using BETACONNECT autoinjector, which automatically captures injection data including injection date, time, speed, and depth and uploads the data into paired myBETAapp. This allows patients to organize and track their progress and share the injection information with their physicians. The medication usage behavior to be collected in this study includes the elements to what extent - taking medication matches the presciber's recommendation (adherence, compliance), - treatment for the prescribed duration (persistence) is continued and - injections were missed. Among MS patients treated with Betaferon using the myBETAapp the study will also collect information on the health-related quality of life , treatment satisfaction and satisfaction with treatment support.
Persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) often suffer from impaired mobility and reduced aerobic capacity. Moreover, 65% of PwMS recognize fatigue as their most disabling symptom that quickly impacts patients' health-related quality of life (QoL). Systematic reviews that evaluate therapeutic options for MS-neurorehabilitation show good evidence for exercise and energy management/conservation programs to improve fatigue or its impact on daily life. Guidelines recommend a multidisciplinary approach but to date only unimodal interventions are investigated. This study aims to investigate the influence of the combination of two different therapeutic concepts: inpatient energy management education (IEME) + High-intensity interval training (HIIT). This intervention is compared with a control group that undergoes progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) + low-intensity training (ST). IEME or PMR is performed on two days (tue-thur) and HIIT or ST on three days (mo-wed-fr) / week. The primary outcome is the effect on the quality of life after three weeks rehabilitation and after returning home (at 4 and 6 months follow-up) in PwMS.
This study investigates whether neuroproprioceptive "facilitation, inhibition" physical therapy induces plastic and adaptive processes of the CNS (white matter integrity changes), if they relate to clinical improvement, and whether therapeutic effect differs between different kinds of therapies.
Falls are a common problem in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and can lead to severe consequences (trauma, fear of falling, reduction of social activities). Prevention of falls is one of the priority targets of rehabilitation for PwMS and walking difficulties, which can result of different factors (motor impairment, ataxia, sensitive disorders, fatigability…). Urinary incontinence has been evoked as predictive of falls. But lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) are frequent in PwMS, the prevalence of LUTSs is high (32-96.8%) and increases with MS duration and severity of neurological deficiencies and disabilities. Overactive bladder (OAB) is the most common symptom. Despite its high prevalence and impact on quality of life, the severity of LUTSs has never been studied as specific risk factor of falling. However, urinary urgency and urinary incontinence could lead to precipitation and thus could increase the risk of falling in these patients. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between severity of LUTSs and risk of falling in PwMS. Patients were asked about the number of falls in the past three months and in the past year, and the circumstances in which they occurred (frequency, home, outdoors, going to void, during urinary urgency, nocturia). Severity of LUTSs were assessed by the Urinary Symptoms Profile (USP) Score and patient were classified as with or without urinary incontinence. Number of micturition by night were specifically asked. To take into account motor difficulties and fear of falling, other clinical evaluations were done. The impact of MS on walking was assessed by the 12-Item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS12) questionnaire, the Expanded Disability Status Scale score, and by clinical test with the Time to be Ready to Void (TRV). Fear of falling was assessed by a simple question and with Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) Questionnaire. The primary aim was to assess the relationship between severity of LUTSs and occurrence of falls during the past 3 months. The primary outcome was the importance of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms with OAB USP score. The secondary outcomes were the existence of urinary incontinence, the warning time (defined as the time from the first sensation of urgency to voiding or incontinence), the importance of nocturia and the other scores of USP questionnaire (low stream and stress urinary incontinence). The secondary aims were to look for the relationship between severity of LUTSs and occurrence of falls during the past year, and to assess the relationship between falls and the classical risk factors of falls.
Systemic sclerosis is a systemic disease which may involve multiple organ systems and cause functional disabilities. Microstomia is one of the most common complications of the disease which may result in difficulties performing oral self-care, complication in professional dental care and even malnutrition in the advanced cases. Since the disease is rare and the studies are limited, there is still not an agreed upon orofacial exercise program to improve the oral aperture of the patients. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of a newly diseased home-based exercise program for improving microstomia in those patient population.
Contagious disease outbreaks, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, and associated restrictions to prevent spread can lead to negative psychological outcomes, including loneliness, depression, and anxiety, particularly in vulnerable populations at risk due to existing medical conditions. To date, no randomized controlled trials have tested interventions to reduce mental health consequences of contagious disease outbreaks. Systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma) is a rare, chronic, autoimmune disease characterized by vasculopathy and excessive collagen production. Systemic Sclerosis can affect multiple organ systems, including the skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and heart. Many people with scleroderma are at risk of serious complications from COVID-19 if infected due to lung involvement (> 40% have interstitial lung disease) and common use of immunosuppressant drugs. The objective of The Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network COVID-19 Home-isolation Activities Together (SPIN-CHAT) Trial is to evaluate a videoconference-based intervention designed to improve symptoms of anxiety and other mental health outcomes among individuals with systemic sclerosis at risk of poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trial is a pragmatic randomized controlled trial that will be conducted using an existing cohort of systemic sclerosis patients. We will use a partially nested design to reflect dependence between individuals in training groups but not in the waitlist control. The SPIN-CHAT Program includes activity engagement, education on strategies to support mental health, and mutual participant support.
