Survey of Patient and Physician Awareness and Values to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Reduced Kidney Function (Chronic Kidney Disease) in Patients With High Blood Sugar Level (Type 2 Diabetes) (AWARE-CKD in T2D)

In this survey study, researchers want to find out more about how physicians are treating patients diagnosed with reduced kidney function (chronic kidney disease, CKD) and high blood sugar level (type 2 diabetes); what physicians know about the different treatment options available; and how they use this knowledge to treat their patients successfully. Additionally, researchers want to gather information about patient's awareness of their disease and which criteria they consider important for their treatment of the disease. The study will survey a total of 150 patients with type 2 diabetes: 50 patients with mild CKD; 50 patients with moderate CKD; and 50 patients with severe CKD. Patients eligible for this study can be male or female and should be at least 18 years old. In addition, a total of 150 physicians will be surveyed. Physicians eligible for this study may be general practitioners, endocrinologist, or nephrologists.

Effects of Fasting Mimetic Diet on Nephropatic Patients

Fasting mimetic diet (FMD) showed positive effects on cardiovascular risks. Purpose of the trial is to evaluate FMD effects on patients affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD), through the stimulation of kidney stem cells and improving cardiovascular and metabolic status. From April 2018, the investigators enrolled 13 patients (7 male) with an history of primary glomerulonephritis (GMN) and an eGFR between 60 ml/min and 30 ml/min. Exclusion criteria are: age <18 y.o., age> 65 y.o., secondary GMN, severe heart failure (NYHA IV),ongoing infectious diseases, ongoing neoplasia, hepatic diseases, COPD, inflammatory bowel disease, history of stroke, history of acute coronary disease less than 3 months, pregnancy, refuse informed consent.

A Study Using the LMC Diabetes Registry to Learn More About Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Canadian Patients With Type 2 Diabetes (T2D)

In people with type 2 diabetes (T2D), the body does not make enough of a hormone called insulin or does not use insulin well. This results in high blood sugar levels. People with T2D are at a higher risk of having a condition called chronic kidney disease (CKD). In people with CKD, the kidneys become damaged and do not work as they should. People with CKD can have trouble breathing and often have swelling in their arms and legs, and high blood pressure. People who have CKD and T2D are more likely to have other medical problems, such as heart disease. There are many treatments available to patients who have CKD and T2D. But, researchers need more information about how doctors in Canada are deciding which treatment to give these patients. In this study, the researchers will review health information from men and women with T2D who visited a doctor in 2019 and had check-ups for at least 6 months. The health information will be taken from a Canadian registry (or database) owned by LMC Diabetes & Endocrinology. The registry contains information from people that went to an LMC clinic. In this study, the researchers will learn how many of these people had T2D and CKD. They will learn the treatments these people received, and if they had other related medical problems. The researchers will also use surveys to ask the doctors about why they chose certain treatments.

These effects are increased as the disease progress to endstage renal disease (ESRD), particularly when external intervention (i.e. dialysis) is used to keep these individuals alive. The combined effect of ESRD and its treatment has a significant impact on an individual's life, potentially causing reduced employment time, reduced social time and increased anxiety/stress. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact that CKD/ESRD have on an individual's life. Specifically, this study is focused on giving an insight into the psychosocial impact that CKD/ESRD and different forms of renal replacement therapy have upon these individuals.
