Filter by:Service members and/or recently separated veterans with post traumatic stress symptoms and mild traumatic brain injury may participate in 8 sessions including 2 sessions including interviews and questionnaires as well as 6 sessions of art therapy. In the art therapy, participants will be provided with a blank paper mache mask template and invited to alter the mask however they wish using a variety of art materials. The therapist will use the art-making process and culminating product to aid in self-reflection, reframe negative thoughts and feelings, and work through traumatic content. Prior to the session start participants will get set up with a mobile qEEG (worn like a hat and backpack). The qEEG will measure brain activity in a non-invasive way throughout the art therapy session to improve understanding of brain activity during the art therapy process.
Review treatment outcomes of modifications to standard delivery of CPT for PTSD that are delivered as routine care at in VA outpatient clinic.
Opioid misuse is a national public health epidemic. More than 130 people in the United States die each day following an opioid overdose, and over 2 million people meet criteria for an opioid use disorder (OUD). Medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which involves use of medication (buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) in combination with behavioral therapy or counseling, is the most effective intervention for OUD. Yet, MAT remains less than optimally effective, particularly for patients with psychiatric comorbidity [6]. Novel approaches are needed to improve long-term outcomes for OUD patients. Psychological trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are highly prevalent among individuals with OUD. Over 90% of adults with OUD report a lifetime history of trauma. Among OUD patients engaged in MAT, nearly 20% report experiencing at least one new traumatic event each month, and nearly a third meet criteria for a co-occurring diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Several studies have linked new incidents of trauma as well as the presence of PTSD to poorer MAT engagement and poorer treatment outcomes, including treatment interruption and premature dropout. Preliminary evidence suggests that engaging in trauma-focused treatment for PTSD concurrent with MAT may result in better long-term adherence to medication for OUD. However, recent evidence finds that fewer than half of patients with PTSD in MAT receive any trauma-focused treatment, and even fewer receive evidence-based interventions. Trauma-focused treatments that concurrently address symptoms of PTSD and substance abuse using an integrated approach have been recommended over traditional substance abuse interventions for patients with this complex dual diagnosis presentation. Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) is a 12-session evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy that integrates exposure therapy for PTSD with cognitive-behavioral skills for addressing problem substance use. COPE has demonstrated efficacy for reducing symptoms of PTSD and substance use disorder across multiple trials. Most samples have included patients with alcohol use disorder or mixed substance use disorder diagnoses. The proposed pilot study would collect preliminary feasibility data to support the first trial of COPE for patients with OUD (and other substance use disorders) who are currently engaged in MAT. As such, a primary aim of the current pilot is to obtain patient feedback regarding the acceptability and applicability of COPE for patients with PTSD receiving MAT treatment through the Supportive Medication Assisted Recovery Treatment (SMART) Program within the University of Kentucky (UK) Department of Psychiatry, an outpatient buprenorphine clinic. The investigators believe that it is critical to engage patients directly in the process of intervention development/refinement to determine how an existing evidence-based intervention like COPE might be modified to best fit the unique needs of patients receiving MAT.
The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of the combined interventions, Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) or P-STAIR, for treating maternal PTSD and reducing maltreatment recidivism.
For this clinical demonstration study, Veterans will be assessed with a battery of questionnaires/surveys and a 1:1 clinical interview with a V-TRACTS psychologist to target domains of head injury, psychological trauma, depression, suicidality, anxiety, chronic pain and sleep, substance use and activity level. V-TRACTS will convene a weekly consensus meeting to evaluate all the data, and develop a recommendation plan. After the consensus meeting, a V-TRACTS psychologist will provide comprehensive feedback encompassing the entire assessment battery. Additionally, if warranted, the investigators will offer an optional cognitive assessment, as well as rehabilitation options that the consensus committee targets the individual Veteran's needs and also via VA telehealth or other approved online service. It will be the Veteran's choice whether he/she wants to participate in any one or more of these options.
This multi-site open-label study assesses the efficacy and safety of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy in participants who were enrolled in a parent study for treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study will be conducted in up to N ≈ 100 participants. Participants will receive a flexible dose of MDMA, followed by a supplemental dose, unless contraindicated, during the Treatment Period with manualized psychotherapy in three monthly Experimental Sessions. This ~12-week Treatment Period is preceded by three Preparatory Sessions. During the Treatment Period, each Experimental Session is followed by three Integrative Sessions of non-drug psychotherapy. The Primary Outcome measure is the change in PTSD Checklist (PCL-5) for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) from Visit 3 is assessed at Visit 16. This study will compare the effects of three manualized Experimental Sessions of psychotherapy assisted by flexible doses of MDMA. Initial doses per Experimental Session include 80 mg or 120 mg of MDMA compounded with mannitol and magnesium stearate alone (mannitol and magnesium stearate), followed 1.5 to 2 hours later by a supplemental dose (40 or 60 mg). Total amounts of MDMA to be administered per Experimental Session range from 80 mg to 180 mg.
The efficacy of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for reducing the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) across populations including military personnel and veterans is well supported. CPT also contributes to significant and rapid reductions in suicide ideation among people diagnosed with PTSD, although available evidence suggests this effect decays over time. Studies also show that approximately 1 in 6 people who begin CPT without suicide ideation will subsequently report suicidal thoughts at some point during or soon after completing treatment. Research focused on improving CPT's effects on suicide risk is therefore warranted. The primary aim of this study is to determine if the integration of a crisis response plan (CRP)--an empirically-supported procedure for reducing suicide ideation and attempts--can lead to faster reductions in suicide ideation among acutely suicidal veterans receiving CPT and prevent the development of suicide ideation among veterans who begin CPT without suicide ideation.
This study is an effectiveness trial investigating neurofeedback (NFB) in adults with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions - i) NFB, or ii) wait list. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our study will, primarily, take place online (i.e., online assessment and treatment, with option of in-person fMRI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, scans). NFB sessions will be conducted from home, with videoconferenced supervision by research staff. After study completion, individuals in the wait list condition will be offered the same NFB treatment.
- To systematically evaluate an innovative directed psycho-educational intervention consisting of written specific, age-appropriate information, complemented by a follow-up targeted telephone call in order to reduce psychological sequelae in the child and their parents/guardians after PICU discharge. - To confirm the effects of the psycho-educational tool on parent and child emotional adjustment 6 months after PICU discharge; and to explore whether these outcomes are associated with the child's age; with receipt of the targeted telephone call; and/or with parental levels of stress during the child's admission. - To obtain detailed feedback from parents/guardians and children about the different aspects of the psycho-educational intervention (the written information and the targeted telephone call) and the utility of these two psycho-educational interventions. The study team will perform a randomised controlled trial of the intervention vs treatment as usual in children 0-16 years, stratified according to age (< 4 years and > 4 years). It is estimated that 288 children will be required to show a difference in outcome which is PTSD in parents and children.
