Spinal Cord Stimulation for Restless Legs Syndrome

The overall goal of this proposed study is to evaluate the underlying mechanisms of neural control of blood flow in the lower extremities in humans with restless leg syndrome (RLS). At least 15% of the general public suffers from RLS and many more may go undiagnosed. This unfortunate disorder leads primarily to a disturbing sensation within the patient's lower extremities that requires movement for relief (1, 2). The central hypothesis of our study is that physiological changes in lower limb blood flow as a result of thoracolumbar epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) lead to the relief of RLS.

Clinical Observational Study: IBD Patients With Restless-legs-syndrome and Iron Deficiency Syndrome

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn´s disease or ulcerative colitis, have recurring episodes of abdominal pain, diarrhea and loss of weight. Besides this other clinical symptoms are possible e.g. deficiency syndromes such as iron deficiency. Iron deficiency usually attended by symptoms like hair loss, pale skin, loss of concentration or fatigue. In some cases iron deficiency can lead to neurological manifestations such as restless-legs-syndrome (RLS). Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorders which is accompanied by substantial urge to move legs or other parts of the body and unpleasant sensations. Aim of this study is to to investigate the prevalence of RLS in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and furthermore evaluate the effect of iron supplementation in patients with iron deficiency and concomitant RLS.

Agitated Saline Versus CXR Confirmation of Central Venous Lines

Central venous lines insertion are common procedures these days. CVL placed under USG guidance have high success rates and low complications even in developing country settings. However, the investigators still have to rely on chest x-ray (CXR) to confirm the correct placement of central venous lines as a gold standard method. This might be time consuming and may cause delay in initiation of treatment. In some cases, as in operating room, the treatment is started even before confirmation by CXR. Ultrasound has ability to localize the tip of the catheter at the superior venacava- right atrium junction using agitated saline and the appearance of contrast within 2 seconds in right atrium. However, this technique is rarely used. The investigators, therefore, designed the trial to study whether confirmation of tip of CVL by ultrasound is non-inferior to the CXR confirmation.

Anterior Ethmoidal Nerve Block in Prevention of Postoperative Agitation

Postoperative agitation is an important complication of general anesthesia, moreover, it has been found with high incidence in ear, nose, throat (ENT) surgeries. We aim to study whether anterior ethmoidal nerve block will be successful in reducing postoperative agitation in those patients. Study population will be randomized into two groups, treatment and control group. Anterior ethmoidal nerve block will be done in treatment group and postoperative agitation compared between these two groups. Agitation score will be scored with Riker Sedation-Agitation Scale (SAS). Ho: Occurrence of post-operative agitation in patients undergoing nasal surgery with nasal pack under general anesthesia is equal in those with ethmoidal nerve block as compared to those without the block. Ha: Occurrence of post-operative agitation in patients undergoing nasal surgery with nasal pack under general anesthesia is not equal in those with ethmoidal nerve block as compared to those without the block.
