Filter by:For the current study, the investigators will develop, implement, and evaluate web-based and consultative training for Family Advocates employed at Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) across the United States to enhance children's early engagement in evidence-based mental health treatment. The interactive web-based training will embed key targets of knowledge and skills related to family engagement, trauma, evidence-based practices (EBP), and EBP services in the community. Seventy-five CACs who apply to participate in training will be randomized to a webinar-only training group, a webinar plus consultation training group, and a delayed (waitlist) control group. It is hypothesized that the Family Advocates and CAC Directors will report high levels of satisfaction with the training. More importantly, it is also hypothesized that webinar training will improve Family Advocates' knowledge, resulting in minor improvement in EBP engagement, while the addition of consultation in the second training group will lead to increased use of engagement skills, thereby resulting in greater improvement in family engagement in EBP.
The overall goal of this study is to develop, adapt and evaluate an intergenerational prevention intervention, named "Wakȟáŋyeža (Little Holy One)," with Native American caregivers on a Northern Plains reservation and the caregivers' 2-to-5-year-old children. The intervention aims to: 1) reduce symptoms of historical trauma and everyday stress among parents/caregivers, 2) improve parenting, and 3) improve children's emotional and behavioral developmental outcomes to reduce future risk for suicide and substance use.
Operational Stress Injuries (OSIs), including post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are prevalent among veterans deployed in recent combat missions, the effects of which are experienced within their families. The development of evidence-based programs for veterans with OSIs and their families is critical because family functioning both affects and is affected by OSIs. Few programs have been implemented, however, particularly in Canada, and those that have are not evaluated. Research suggests that brief, systems-focused family psychoeducation programs are useful in the treatment of OSIs, specifically PTSD, leading to increases in targeted PTSD knowledge and skills and enhancing resilience. The purpose of this pilot study is to: (1) develop a systems-focused, virtual psychoeducational program designed to enhance resilience in veterans with OSIs receiving clinical care at an OSI clinic in Atlantic Canada and their families; (2) to implement the virtual program with veterans and their families at the OSI clinic; (3) to evaluate the efficacy of the program; and (4) to compare resilience-building family psychoeducation to the standard information-providing services currently available to families at the OSI clinic. Results will be shared within the network of OSI clinics in Canada and will inform the development of a proposal for a mixed-method study.
The present study is a randomized control trial to evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of a school-based group prevention program (Fuerte) in San Francisco Unified School District Public Schools. In addition, the present study will also inform effective procedures for adaptations of the Fuerte program for other newcomer immigrant youth from non-Latin American countries. Fuerte targets newcomer Latinx immigrant youth (five years or less post arrival in the U.S.) who are at risk of experiencing traumatic stress. In particular, the Fuerte program focuses on increasing youth's mental health literacy, improving their social functioning, and identifying and connecting at-risk youth to specialty mental health services. The program will be implemented by mental health providers from various county community-based organizations, as well as from the SFUSD Wellness Centers, who already offer mental health services in SFUSD schools.
Connection to Environment with Cognitive Therapy (CONNECT): A Single-Case Experimental Design Exploring Dissociative Experiences and Voices Emerging empirical evidence has suggested that dissociation is a robust determinant of voice-hearing in psychosis, and that dissociation mediates the link between trauma and voices. Despite the emerging evidence-base, targeted therapeutic interventions focusing on dissociation remain largely untested. The aim of the current study is to investigate whether targeting dissociation leads to improvements in distressing voices in people with a history of trauma. This will be done by delivering an eight session intervention called 'CONNECT' to six individuals within the Glasgow Psychological Trauma Service (GPTS) who hear voices, have experienced trauma and are dissociating. The intervention will focus on learning strategies to manage dissociation. It is hypothesised that reduced levels of dissociation will be associated with reduction in the frequency and distress associated with hearing voices. This study will use a randomized multiple baseline single-case experimental design, meaning that participants will be randomly allocated to a baseline of two, three or four weeks and then will begin eight weeks of Connection to Environment Cognitive Therapy (CONNECT). As well as daily measures during baseline and intervention phases, there will be four assessment points (baseline, pre-intervention, post-intervention and follow-up). The study will take approximately three months plus follow-up one month after therapy ends. Individual levels of dissociation and voices will be compared during baseline and intervention periods using visual analysis and Tau-U. This study will contribute to the evidence-based for dissociation interventions targeting distressing voices among this population. It serves to investigate the proposed mechanism in a clinical population using a therapeutic intervention. It will therefore inform clinicians of the effectiveness and feasibility of using such strategies in clinical practice and may have good generalizability to practice.
This study evaluates a transdiagnostic Internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) recently tailored for Canadian public safety personnel (PSP) reporting symptoms of depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress. Outcomes of interest include engagement with the intervention, changes in symptoms and functioning, and strengths and limitations of implementing ICBT with Canadian PSP.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a new self-help intervention designed to support individuals (anyone with a cervix) to access cervical cancer screening following the experience of sexual assault, by addressing psychological barriers identified by previous research, specifically shame, low self-efficacy and the re-traumatising nature of attending to sexual health after sexual trauma.
Research on racial discrimination (RD) continues to show the debilitating toll on mental and physical health for adolescents throughout their developmental trajectory, particularly for Black Americans. While adolescents may employ emotion-focused behaviors (e.g., overeating, etc.) in-the-moment to reduce discriminatory distress, such risk-laden behaviors can result in later disparities in their overall health. While this link has been repeatedly established in the literature, racially-specific protective mechanisms (e.g., racial socialization; RS) have been shown to disrupt the pathway from discrimination to health-related outcomes in adolescents. Although informative, the literature on RS has yet to advance our understanding of ways to improve upon these protective processes in Black families. Thus, the proposed study will further our understanding by aiming to improve RS competency (e.g., skills and efficacy) among African American caregivers and youth (ages 10-14) in Detroit, Michigan through the Engaging, Managing, and Bonding through Race (EMBRace) intervention. The EMBRace intervention facilitates spaces where Black caregivers strengthen and develop skills to be attentive to their adolescent's racial trauma while also reducing their own stress via racial coping knowledge and RS strategies. Parents and adolescents start each session by engaging in separate therapeutic sessions to process experiences of their Black identity. They will then join together for a family session that focuses on enhancing messages about racial pride, bias preparation, rationales behind promoting distrust, and why not engaging in RS practices may be detrimental to youth. EMBRace sessions will take place at the University of Michigan Detroit Center and community sites, and will be video recorded to improve upon the delivery of therapeutic techniques to the families we serve.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized, widespread chronic pain disorder and has an estimated prevalence of 2%-4% in the general population. Current pharmacological and psychological interventions frequently produce limited benefits in FM patients. Due to FM's strong association with psychological trauma causing neurobiological alterations in stress response, a trauma-focused psychotherapy is an innovative alternative treatment option. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a first-line therapeutic tool for post-traumatic stress disorder and first evidence suggests that it is also beneficial for patients with FM. Given the complex etiology of FM, a combination of psychotherapy with other treatment options can maximize a potential therapeutic success. A possible candidate herby is Multifocal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive stimulation technique, which can modify neural activities related to pain and which has shown short-term positive effects on chronic pain and quality of life in FM patients. The patient sample will consist of 45 female patients meeting 2016 American College of Rheumatology criteria for FM based on a clinical interview. They will be randomized to 20 sessions of EMDR plus tDCS or EMDR plus sham-tDCS, or Treatment as Usual (TAU). Therapists, raters, and patients will be kept blind to MtCS treatment conditions. Evaluations will be at baseline, post treatment at 6 months, and follow-up at 12 months. Hypotheses are that EMDR improves pain intensity and clinical symptoms at short and long-term, and that tDCS enhances this effect, which will be superior to tDCS-sham.
25 parental couples, with a prenatal diagnosis of fetal abnormality, had psychiatric evaluation for eligibility before TToP and after one year from the procedure. Women and unborn's fathers were also subjected to different psychometric questionnaires (HAM-D, HAM-A, BDI-II, PCL-5, IPDS, CTQ, CD-RISC-10).
