Filter by:Intervention in the form of a PA (physical activity) program combining aerobic, resistance, and flexibility exercises adapted for wearing a lower limb offloading device and limiting weight-bearing on the feet, with a duration of twelve (12) weeks, consisting of two supervised sessions and one unsupervised home session per week.
Overweight and obesity, understood as an accumulation of abnormal and excessive fat, are the second leading cause of preventable and avoidable mortality in developed countries, with more than 340 million children and adolescents affected by this disease worldwide. As a consequence, overweight and obesity at an early age is already considered a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), with a high incidence in developed countries. The abuse of new technologies has remained at worrying levels in the post-COVID period, favoring an increase in the adolescent population considered sedentary. In this regard, up to 70% of adolescents show sedentary behaviors, especially affecting the time spent on screens by both males (93.8%) and females (87.2%). Thus, the use of the cell phone has been shown to be a determining factor, since between 10% and 16% of adolescents show a problematic use of this device, affecting, among other aspects, their behavior during their free time. In recent years there has been an increase in sedentary time among adolescents and a decrease in the practice of physical activity that has favored a greater accumulation of body fat and increased the probability of being overweight or obese. In this context, some studies have tried to encourage the practice of physical activity in the school context in overweight and obese population, being these interventions effective to improve body composition. However, these interventions also have their detractors, who argue that the hours of Physical Education are too limited to dedicate so much time to a single content, and that the pedagogical component is often overlooked in their implementation. As an alternative to the above, it has been suggested that Physical Education classes could be used to promote interventions that encourage adolescents to practice physical activity in their free time, and mobile applications could be used to monitor the activity carried out by adolescents, but also as an element that generates adherence and enjoyment in this population. Research in this population using these technologies is scarce, therefore, this project aims to determine the effectiveness of a ten-week intervention promoted from the subject of physical education in which a mobile application is used after school hours on physical activity, body composition and fitness in overweight or obese adolescents.
The study was conducted in the age range of 18-45 December, who were diagnosed with Cystic fibrosis.
Research has demonstrated the positive effects of chronic exercise on cognitive functioning and performance of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). However, minimal research exists regarding the effects of acute exercise. To address this gap in the literature, the present study investigated the effect of an acute bout of exercise on executive functions, balance, and ADLs among healthy older adults. Based on the current literature, we expected participants in the exercise group to perform better on executive function tasks and ADLs compared to participants in the control group.
The aim of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the effect of Nordic walking and inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on cardiopulmonary function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Mild-to-moderate knee OA patients are randomly allocated into Experimental group (Nordic walking plus routine management) or Control group (Routine management). While End-stage knee OA patients are randomly allocated into Experimental group (IMT plus pre-operative rehabilitation exercise) or Control group (Pre-operative rehabilitation exercise). Participants are invited to undergo two assessments, including baseline assessment, post-intervention assessment. Researchers will compare two groups to see if the cardiopulmonary function can be improved after intervention.
Globally, overweight and obesity have become a major health concern and are present at all ages in both developed and developing countries. Sedentary lifestyle habits lead to reduced physical activity, which reduces energy expenditure, and this, combined with excessive energy intake, increases the risk of obesity. Lack of exercise combined with a sedentary lifestyle can exacerbate obesity and chronic disease. Among all obese people, the number of obese college students shows a growing trend. Obesity among college students not only leads to impaired physical health, but may also lead to discrimination, low self-confidence and self-efficacy, and even depression. Although traditional exercise methods can help college students with weight management, many college students do not enjoy these traditional physical activities. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a new form of exercise that is different from traditional exercise to get college students moving. Thus, obtaining the recommended level of physical activity. With the progress of information technology and the popularity of electronic devices, the frequency of college students using computers and mobile phones has increased. Taking advantage of college students' interest in screen games, it is a new way to control sedentary behaviours and obesity by converting static screen usage time into dynamic screen usage time. Active video games (AVGs) are a new type of video games, which require players to complete the game by interacting with the images on the screen through upper limb, lower limb, and whole-body movements. Studies have shown that playing active video games produces more energy expenditure and physical activity than sedentary video games (static games). The variety of research on AVGs is promising, but the population of participants in the studies has been mostly children and adolescents. The college student population, with a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, has a high prevalence of screen time. It is especially important to intervene with overweight and obese college students using AVG to shift their interest from screens to exercise, thereby increasing physical activity intensity. Therefore, this paper will systematically investigate the effects of AVGs on physical activity, mental health, and body composition of overweight and obese college students in China.
Background: Respiratory health problems are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in adult people with acquired brain injury (ABI). The influence of respiratory muscle training has not yet been studied in this population group. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of two protocols with respiratory muscle training, inspiratory muscle training vs expiratory muscle training, to improve respiratory strength and pulmonary function in adults with CP. Methods: The study is a controlled, randomised, double-blind trial and with allocation concealment. 26 ABI patients will be recruited and randomly distributed in the inspiratory muscle training group (IMT) and the expiratory muscle training group (EMT). Over an 8-week period an IMT or EMT protocol was followed 5 days/week, 5 series of 1-minute with 1-minute rest between them. IMT trained with a load of 50% of the maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and EMT with 50% of the maximum expiratory pressure (MEP). Respiratory strength and pulmonary function were evaluated.
Background: Respiratory disease is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in adults with cerebral palsy (CP). Adequate pulmonary function is essential to prevent these health problems, however respiratory muscle training has not yet been studied in CP patients. The main objective of the study was to investigate the maintenance over time of improvements in respiratory parameters achieved with inspiratory muscle training (IMT). Methods: This was a controlled, randomised, double-blind trial and with allocation concealment performed on 27 institutionalized CP patients randomly distributed in 2 groups, "high intensity training group" (HIT) and "low intensity training group" (LIT). Participants followed a specific IMT program for 8 weeks, HIT workload was 40% of maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and LIT workload was 20% MIP. Once finished 8-week training period, CP patients continued their daily activities. Respiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function were measured pre-IMT, post-IMT, 4, 12 and 24 weeks after finishing IMT.
This project was a 12-week aerobic and resistance training intervention that included participants meeting at a pre-determined location from 1-2 times per week for 12 weeks. Aerobic activity was walking. Resistance training included traditional and non-traditional implements.
The goal of this observational study is to examine the associations among fall risk appraisal, body composition, and physical activity in older adults in low-income settings. The main questions it aims to answer are: - What is the feasibility of recruitment (e.g., how many older adults need to be screened to recruit the sample?), especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and acceptability of technologies and procedures for use among older adults in low-income settings? - What are the the dynamic relationships between fall risk appraisal, body composition, physical activity, and behavioral changes related to fear of falling? Participants will: - complete questionnaires about their characteristics, socio-demographic, medical history, cognition, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and fear of falling. - participate in static and dynamic balance tests, body composition measurement and handgrip strength test. - wear an accelerometer for physical activity assessment for 7 consecutive days.
