Coconut Oil in Treatment of Periodontitis

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a vegetable oil extracted from coconut fleshcontains unsaturated fatty acids in the form of oleic acid and linoleic acid and flavonoids which function as anti-inflammatory. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues with a high prevalence worldwide. The main etiology of plaque periodontitis is biofilm containing colonies of pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of the study is to evaluate and compare the effect of scaling and root debridement alone versus the use of topically applied coconut oil as adjunctive to scaling and root debridement in treatment of Stage II and III Grade B periodontitis.

Effects of Smoking on Clinical and Microbiological Response in Individuals With Periodontitis

This study aimed to compare the distribution of subgingival periodontal pathogens following non-surgical periodontal therapy in smoking and non-smoking people with periodontitis. The main question it aims to answer is: - Does smoking affect the results of non-surgical periodontal treatment on subgingival flora in participants with periodontal disease? Researchers performed non-surgical periodontal therapy on 48 participants with stage III/IV periodontitis and recorded clinical measurements. They obtained subgingival plaque samples from periodontal pockets at the onset and after four weeks of treatment, determining the level of periodontopathogens using a polymerase chain reaction-based method.

Evaluation of Postoperative Pain After Single Visit Retreatment of Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Teeth

Introduction: The aim of this study comparing the post operative pain after the retreatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic teeth that during single visit treatment with rotary and reciprocal nickel titanium files. Methods: One hundred and forty one patients scheduled for non-surgical endodontic retreatment were included for evaluation. Eighty five patients who needed endodontic retreatment were assingned to 2 groups according to semptomatic or asemptomatic teeth and 4 subgroups with rotary and resiprocal files. Endodontic filling material was removed with One Flare and MicroMega REMOVER files in the retreatment kit. Patients then recorded their postoperative pain on a VAS scale at 24h, 48h, 72h, 7 days and 14 days post-treatment. Results were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn-Bonferroni and Pearson Chi-square tests.

It was aimed to evaluate the changes in the levels of Periostin, IL-17A and IL-17E cytokines in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of periodontitis patients which non-surgical (Phase I) periodontal treatment applied to and their interactions with smoking. The study included systemic healthy smokers(SP)(n:11) and non-smokers(P)(n:11) with periodontitis, smokers (SS)(n:11) and non-smokers(S)(n:11) with periodontal healthy individuals Phase I periodontal treatment was applied to the groups with periodontitis. Before treatment (day 0), clinical measurements evaluating periodontal status were recorded and GCF samples were collected. GCF samples were collected from the same tooth regions on the 15th and 30th days after treatment and clinical measurements were repeated. GCF Periostin, IL-17A and IL-17E levels were determined by ELISA method. All data were evaluated statistically.

Gingival Crevicular Fluid (GCF) Bactericidal Permeability Protein (BPI) and Interleukin (IL)-1 Beta

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the amounts of BPI (Bactericidal permeability protein) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) in gingival fluid samples obtained from individuals with periodontally healthy and periodontal disease, to compare these amounts between study groups, and to evaluate their relationship with clinical parameters. In cases where clinical parameters increase, IL-1β amounts also increase significantly. The amount of IL-1β in individuals with periodontal disease is significantly higher compared to healthy individuals. There is positive correlation between BPI and clinical parameters. The amount of BPI in individuals with periodontal disease is significantly higher than in healthy individuals. More studies are needed to better understand the importance and therapeutic effect of BPI in periodontitis
