Filter by:This study plans to learn about how to measure symptoms (like tiredness or rash) in children with special healthcare needs who take 5 or more medications. Sometimes symptoms change in severity over time or new symptoms develop. This can happen after a new medication is started. This can also happen after the dose of an existing medication is changed. The Investigators believe that parents will be able to provide the best assessment of any symptoms that their child might be experiencing. This study asks parents to report any symptoms their child is currently experiencing.
SWITCH Study
Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) might develop dizziness or vertigo as a first manifestation or during the course of the illness. Many patients with MS experience chronic or intermittent dizziness. Acute symptoms of dizziness or vertigo in MS fall into two categories; acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) and positional vertigo. Vestibular disorder due to MS decreases whole body dynamic postural control and causes many functional limitations as limitations in ambulation, dynamic balance and trunk control and that decreases the quality of life. Vestibular dysfunction has long been recognized as causing some of the most common symptoms in MS, true vertigo is found at presentation in up to 17% of patients, several recent reports have suggested that vestibular symptoms develop early in the disease process. Vestibular Rehabilitation has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms and improving function for patients with vestibular disorders. The goal of vestibular rehabilitation is to promote the central nervous system compensation through exercise-based strategies.
Background: Physiotherapists (PTs) in primary health care manage patients with a large variation in medical diagnosis, age, functional status, disability and prognosis. Lack of knowledge and systematically collected data about patients treated by PTs in primary health care has prompted this longitudinal observational physiotherapy project in Norway. This paper aims to describe a method for developing a database of patients managed by PTs in primary health care to study patients' characteristics, treatment courses and prognostic factors. The study is a longitudinal observational project, following patients through physiotherapy treatment periods in primary health care in Norway and until one year after inclusion. The project involves both private practice and municipally employed PTs working in primary health care in eight municipalities in Norway. The participants are recruited to three different parts of the project depending on age and whether they are referred to a private practice or a municipally employed PT. All data are recorded electronically, transferred and stored securely. All patients complete extensive questionnaires providing information about demographics, disability and function, pain related variables, treatment and evaluation of treatment as well as clinical tests. The PTs have access to their own patients' data. The investigators have also prepared for linkage to national patient registers and population-based studies to be able to gather further important data. This project will have important implications for physiotherapy services in primary health care. The database already contains almost 3000 patients, and data collection is ongoing. Preliminary analyses suggest that the patients included so far are representative of the larger population of patients treated by private practice or municipally employed PTs in Norway. This large scale prospective physiotherapy project will provide knowledge about the patient groups treated, treatment given as well as short and long term outcome of the patients.
Cervical myelopathy (CM), a chronically compressive spinal cord lesion, is the most common cause of non-traumatic paraparesis/quadriparesis among the elderly. Hong Kong is facing a heavy social economic burden from CM with the rapidly aging population. Surgical decompression is considered as the mainstay of the treatment for CM patients to relieve their symptoms and signs. Yet the surgical outcome is not always satisfactory. There is a pressing need for understanding the exact mechanism of surgical decompression on the recovery of myelopathic cord in order to improve the prognosis of CM patients in near future.This project will evaluate neuronal activities and axon regeneration by longitudinally monitoring at time zero, 3 and 6 month after the surgery in CM patients using UTE, BOLD-fMRI and DTI, and to investigate the relationship of preoperative neuronal activities of myelopathic cord with axon regeneration.
Neuro-orthopedics corresponds to the evaluation and therapeutic management of the orthopedic consequences of damage to the central or peripheral nervous system. In case of neurological impairment, there may be joint, motor, sensory and cognitive impairments that limit the patient's activities. The management of these orthopedic problems falls within the specific framework of neuro-orthopedics because in the presence of neurological, problems are different and more complex than in classical orthopedics. In this context, a well-conducted evaluation is a prerequisite for appropriate treatment.
The aim of this mixed-methods-study is to develop and validate an algorithm to transform FIM (Functional Independence Measure) and EBI (Extended Barthel Index) into an ADL score (Activities of Daily Life) that can be used to compare outcome quality of rehabilitation clinics. The following steps are performed: 1. Development of an ADL-algorithms by experts 2. Validation of the ADL-algorithms in a quantitative approach 3. Finalization of the ADL-algorithms by experts based on study results
Lite Run is a new assistive device that may have FDA listing as a Class I device by mid 2017 based on clinical testing of adults, independent agency testing and in-house evaluations. This will be a combined study with multiple purposes with respect to the evaluation of its use with the post-operative pediatric population. A first purpose is to verify safety and feasibility of the device on pediatric patients. A second purpose is to statistically test the effectiveness of Lite Run to decrease physical burden on the therapist during post-operative gait training for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy as compared to current methods of body weight-supported gait training. A third purpose is to measure and qualitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the device on patient outcomes and improving patient and therapist satisfaction.
