Filter by:Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) is a viral disease leading to respiratory dysfunction, but it may also affect the brain and result in the development of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). This may be the result of the COVID-19 virus infecting regions of the brain responsible for respiratory control. The symptoms of COVID-19 long haulers and ME/CFS may be lessened via an 8-week inspiratory muscle training protocol which is a simple and easy training protocol which can be done at a patient's home. Thus, this project will investigate changes in the breathing and cardiovascular responses to stimuli in three groups of participants: 1) healthy control individuals; 2) patients diagnosed with ME/CFS (mild to moderate symptoms); and 3) individuals with previous COVID-19 infection with long-haul symptoms lasting for at least 3 months. Participants will 1) breathe hypoxic gas (10% O2) for 5 minutes; 2) breath hypercapnic gas (5% CO2) for 5 minutes; 3) breathe at a rate of 6 breaths per minute for a total of 8 breaths (paced deep breathing); and 4) complete 10 minutes upright tilt (70 degrees head up on a tilt-table). Patients will also complete 2 questionnaires concerning their symptoms and a 15 minute cognitive function test on a lab laptop. This will allow for the assessment of the brain's control over blood pressure and breathing. Participants will also complete a 6-minute walking exercise test at their own speed as a measure of their aerobic fitness. We hypothesize that COVID-19 survivors will have a worse cardiovascular and autonomic response and lower fitness, similar to ME/CFS patients, compared to healthy participants.Further, this will be improved after 8-weeks of inspiratory muscle training. These results may help clinicians recognize ME/CFS symptoms in patients recovering from COVID-19.
In recent years, it has been suggested that nutritional deficiencies may be of causal relevance in individuals with ME/CFS. These include deficiencies of vitamins and trace elements. It is likely that the observed nutritional deficiencies contribute to the core symptoms of the disease. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been studied as an alternative and complementary therapy in ME/CFS for fatigue, pain, tiredness, neurocognitive impairment, and sleep problems. This demonstrates how alterations in energy metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, imbalance of the immune-inflammatory response, and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome are likely consequences of low levels of CoQ10 and selenium, which are related to the main symptoms in ME/CFS. Hypothesis: CoQ10 and selenium levels are decreased in ME/CFS patients. A natural therapeutic alternative in the treatment of common symptoms in ME/CFS could be the oral CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) plus selenium supplementation to module redox status and inflammation response in ME/CFS. Aims: To evaluate the efficacy of oral Ubiquinone + selenium supplementation on clinical outcome and circulating biomarkers in ME/CFS. We enrolled 42 ME/CFS patients diagnosed according to the 1994 CDC/Fukuda criteria who have received oral treatment of 400 mg Ubiquinone + 200 microgram selenium daily for 8 weeks. Demographic, clinical characteristics and laboratory variables, and validated outcome measures to perceived fatigue, sleep disturbances, and quality of life will be also evaluated. In addition, plasma biomarkers related to oxidative stress status (total antioxidant capacity and lipoperoxide levels), inflammatory response (pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines), and cardiovascular dysfunction (FGF-21 and NT-proBNP) will be assayed.
Intense exercise can bring about various side effects to one's body. Less range of motion, increased pain sensitivity, increased muscle swelling, and decreased muscle strength can occur immediately after exercise. These side effects can be referred to exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD) and can sometimes last many days. This study's goal is to evaluate the effects of various protein supplements on EIMD symptoms as well as on blood vessel health during the recovery period after muscle damaging exercise.
Blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise involves the application of a constriction device to the limbs to restrict muscle blood flow during exercise. In recent years, BFR has become increasingly popular due to its additive effects on low-load resistance training, often promoting greater increases in muscle strength and size compared to similar resistance training without BFR. However, like other exercise, it is possible that BFR exercise can cause exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) that results in short-term reductions in muscle function and increased muscle soreness and swelling. One major variable that may influence the onset of EIMD is the restriction pressure used to restrict blood flow; however, the influence of restriction pressure on resistance EIMD is unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of two different restriction pressures (low and high) on EIMD responses to a bout of low-load BFR resistance exercise in a sample of healthy, active adults. It is hypothesised that a higher restriction pressure will result in increased EIMD compared to a lower restriction pressure. To test this hypothesis, participants will perform a lower-body exercise protocol with and without BFR, and several markers of EIMD will be assessed before and immediately, 24, 48, and 72 hours after the exercise.
This project will be Randomized control trial conducted to check the effects of percussive massage treatment with theragun on pain and muscle length on post exercise delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) of calf muscles in healthy population so that we can have best treatment option for people with delayed onset muscle soreness, duration will be of 6months,purposive sampling will be done, subject following eligibility criteria from kasrat health and fitness club, will randomly allocated in two groups, baseline assessment will be done, group A will be treated with 5 minutes of percussive massage and 5 minuties of static stretching exercises, while group B will be managed with 5 minutes of static stretching exercises only. Assessment will be done via, Numeric Pain Rating Scale(NPRS), Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) and goniometric measurements of passive ankle dorsi flexion for calf muscle length at baseline before intervention and immediately post intervention data will be analyzed by using SPSS version 25
The study is designed as a proof of concept, single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study to assess the safety and efficacy of CHI-202 (cannabinoids and other ingredients) compared to placebo in the treatment of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).
The objective of the study is to test the capacity of a five-day supplementation of Turmipure Gold® to improve exercise-induced muscle pain and function recovery in moderately active adults after exercise-induced muscle damage
This clinical study aims to compare the efficacy of two brief psychological interventions: Brief Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (BBIT) and Physical Self-Regulation or (PSR) delivered over telehealth for the management of chronic musculoskeletal orofacial pain conditions (local myalgia, myofascial pain, centrally mediated myalgia) in a tertiary orofacial pain clinic. It is hypothesized that both interventions will produce beneficial changes and exploratory analysis will aim to establish which intervention -if any- is better for each specific outcome.
According to WHO (World Health Organisation) data, about 40% of patients with COVID-19 (Corona Virus SARS-CoV-2) have a mild course of the disease, namely, cases of mild course are of great danger from the point of view of the spread of infection, since the main source of infection is a sick person. The mild course of COVID-19 is characterized by a number of nonspecific symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, malaise, headache, muscle pain. Evidence has emerged of loss of smell as a symptom of COVID-19 infection. Anosmia/hyposmia in the absence of other respiratory diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, acute rhinosinusitis, or chronic rhinosinusitis, are considered as a clinical marker of COVID-19 infection in a pandemic. For people with a mild course of the disease, WHO recommends providing home care, and the recommendations come down to observing a sanitary-hygienic regimen and taking antipyretics if necessary. Unfortunately, the treatment of patients with a mild course is still outside the interest of medical science. In its updated strategy to curb the spread of COVID-19, WHO states the need for diagnosis, effective isolation, and treatment of patients with mild to moderate severity of the clinical course of patients.Currently, there is experience with the use of the drug Imupret for the treatment of nasopharyngitis associated with other viral pathogens, in particular Epstein-Barr virus. It was shown that the use of a Phyto preparation helps to accelerate the regression of symptoms characteristic of nasopharyngitis, as well as accelerate the elimination of the virus from the body. Obviously, the proven activity of Imupret is important in relation to the activation of factors of nonspecific immunity, which is important in confronting viruses, including COVID-19. Another obvious factor that is important for the treatment of viral diseases is the synergism of the active substances in oak bark and walnut leaves with respect to inhibition of reverse transcriptase of a wide range of respiratory viruses, as well as the anti-inflammatory effect of the drug. Confirmation of the therapeutic effect of Imupret for the treatment of nasopharyngitis associated with COVID-19 would allow the development of new therapeutic tools to combat this infection and put into practice updated WHO emphasis on national health systems: it is important to identify, treat and isolate all cases of COVID-19, including cases with mild or moderate severity of the disease.
Investigators specific aims are to compare the effects of consuming daily snacks of raw, shelled, unsalted almonds (2.0 ounces) versus an isocaloric amount of another commonly consumed snack food (pretzels) on energy (vigor) perception and physical activity, exercise performance (VO2max and measures of strength), strength and power performance as well as muscle soreness recovery after strenuous eccentrically-biased exercise.
