Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, autoimmune disease that has detrimental effects on connective tissue and other organs. The musculoskeletal system is one of the most affected systems in this group of patients including the temporomandibular joint. The most common symptoms when muscle involvement in SLE are muscle atrophy decreased muscle strength and myopathy. SLE activity and long-term corticosteroid use are thought to be responsible for these symptoms, thus, SLE patients are accepted to be at higher risk for temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). Low-level laser therapy(LLLT) is frequently used in the treatment of TMD due to its pain relief and anti-inflammatory effect. Thus, in this study, LLLT has been used to evaluate this treatment modality on the chewing function and pain values of SLE patients with myogenic TMD.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (abbreviated "COVID- 19") is a pandemic respiratory disease that is caused by a novel coronavirus and was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The disease is highly infectious, and its main clinical symptoms include fever, dry cough, fatigue, myalgia, and dyspnoea.1 In China, 18.5% of the patients with COVID-19 developed to the severe stage, which is characterized by acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, difficult-to-tackle metabolic acidosis, and bleeding and coagulation dysfunction. After China, COVID-19 spread across the world and many governments implemented unprecedented measures like suspension of public transportation, the closing of public spaces, close management of communities, and isolation and care for infected people and suspected cases. The Malaysian government had enforced Movement Control Order (MCO) from 18th March to 4th May 2020 and henceforth Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) until 9th June 2020. The battle against COVID-19 is still continuing in Malaysia and all over the world. Due to the CMO and CMCO in the country, public and private universities have activated the e-learning mode for classes and as the government ordered, universities are closed and no face-to-face activities allowed. This has forced students of all disciplines including dentistry to stay at home which are wide-spread across Malaysia and shift to e- learning mode. To guarantee the final success for fight against COVID-19, regardless of their education status, students' adherence to these control measures are essential, which is largely affected by their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards COVID-19 in accordance with KAP theory. Once the restrictions are eased students have to come back and resume their clinical work in the campus. Hence, in this study we assessed the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) towards COVID-19 and the students preference for online learning.
Investigating the effect of a single intramuscular injection with botulinum toxin (BTX) compared to NaCl in patients with jaw muscle myalgia. This investigation is designed as an double blind multicenter pilot study for hypothesis generation on 48 patients with chronic jaw muscle myalgia at four specialist dental clinics. The subjects visit the clinic on 3 predefined occasions, one telephone call and one scheduled evaluation by mail. The objective is primarily to evaluate the change in number of days with pain at two months following one session of BTX injections of the masseter and temporalis muscles in subjects with jaw muscle myalgia pain. The outcome of this study will serve as a basis for a later randomized controlled trial
This study investigated the effects of CarnipureTM, a high-quality L-carnitine ingredient, on long term (5 weeks) recovery, muscle damage, and SOD status in a population of males and females while training two days per week. The primary outcomes defining recovery were changes in serum creatine kinase levels and perceptual changes in recovery. Supporting variables included an assessment of strength and power as a functional indicator of recovery. This study would be the first to examine the effects of CarnipureTM on long-term recovery. Our primary hypothesis was that L-carnitine supplementation would reduce muscle damage and improve perceptual measures of recovery. Our secondary hypotheses were that L-carnitine supplementation would better sustain strength and power and elevate SOD status.
Muscle pain is frequently attributed to myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) in which myofascial trigger points (MTrP) are a characteristic feature. Dry needling is a frequent clinical practice to manage MPS but few evidence is published about percutaneous electrolysis effects for the treatment of MPS. This is a randomized clinical trial with 3 parallel groups: 1) High intensity-short time percutaneous electrolysis; 2) Low intensity-long time percutaneous electrolysis; 3) dry needling control group.
