The Effect of Hatha Yoga on Mental Health

The goal of this clinical trial is to determine the effects of a 10-week (2x a week; 45-minute per session) Hatha yoga intervention in adults ages 18-25 (n = 45) on mental health outcomes. The main questions it aims to answer are: What is the effect of a hatha yoga intervention on depression and anxiety symptoms? What is the effect of a hatha yoga intervention on electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha and theta band power? What is the effect of hatha yoga intervention on heart rate variability? Participants will be randomized to three groups: waitlist control (usual routine), Hatha yoga (experimental group), and meditation (active comparative group). Participants in the Hatha yoga experimental group will attend 10 weeks of twice-weekly 45-minute yoga sessions. The active comparison meditation group will participate in 10 weeks of twice-weekly 45-minute meditation sessions. The control group will continue with their usual routine. Researchers will compare changes in depression and anxiety symptoms, EEG alpha and theta band power, and heart rate variability between the three groups.

The study combined a youth-friendly economic empowerment program (Rabbits for Resilience (RFR) with a gender equality couple curriculum program (HIKA) to advance knowledge on the combined and synergistic impact of structural interventions and pathways with families for improved adolescent mental health in resource-poor communities. The investigators' multidisciplinary team will conduct a randomized controlled trial with three arms (RFR only, HIKA only, RFR + HIKA) with young adolescents ages 10-14 years and the adolescents' mothers and fathers living in 1080 rural households in 30 villages in two rural conflict-affected territories of South Kivu province of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The overall goal of the BUMPP study is to improve our understanding of a range of moods, feelings, and thoughts that women can experience during pregnancy and soon after they give birth. This study will examine how these moods, feelings, and thoughts are related to changes in hormonal and immune health that women experience during and after pregnancy, and to mother-baby relationships and infant development in the early postpartum months.

Evaluating Implementation and Impact of PeerOnCall, a Mobile Health Approach to Peer Support for Canadian Public Safety Personnel

A prospective cohort study design will be implemented across four sectors and multiple organizations sites to evaluate implementation and impact of the apps. Pre/post impact data will be collected over a six-month implementation period to assess whether the apps lead to increased Public Safety Personnel outreach to peer support (primary outcome), and to increased mental health literacy, and decreased mental distress (secondary outcomes). Recruitment will take place at three levels; 1) organizations (including knowledge users/organization champions), 2) peer support providers, and 3) public safety personnel employed within each participating organization. Sources of implementation and impact data for the six-month trial will include: 1) app utilization data, 2) knowledge user/organization champion interviews, 3) surveys with public safety personnel, 4) focus groups with peer support providers, and 5) implementation costs. Analysis will focus on both implementation and effectiveness to address the research questions related to the impact of the apps, as well as how the process and context of implementation shapes effectiveness.

Promote Brain Resilience for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Background: By the end of 2020, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in over 84 million cases and nearly 2 million deaths. Continued confinement and restriction are expected to negatively affect mental health, however, some individuals are likely to show much less negative impact than others. The characterization and neurobiological determinants of brain resilience vs vulnerability during the pandemic should generate critical knowledge and open future avenues for individually tailored interventions. Objectives: 1. Identify the individual psychobiological determinants of resilience during COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Conduct a non-invasive brain stimulation intervention to modulate the expression of resilience brain networks. Methods: Barcelona Brain Health Initiative participants will be included, encompassing multiple assessments before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Machine learning techniques will be applied to define brain networks signature of resilience. Subsequently transcranial alternating stimulation will be used during a controlled trial intervention to promote the expression of brain resilience networks. Expected results: The present project should provide critical new knowledge on brain mechanisms underlying resilience and first evidences of the feasibility and impact of modulating brain resilience networks in terms of its effects on mental health of participants.
