Filter by:This research study is designed to look at the involvement of the glutamate system and synaptic density in depression and bipolar disorder. Each participant will undergo a screening appointment to determine study eligibility. Thereafter, the study will take 2 or 3 visits depending on schedule availability and will consist of a combination of one magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan, one proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and/or one C13 MRS scans, and up to two positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Participants will also participate in cognitive testing. Depending on camera time, staff availability and subject schedule, total study participation may last 1-2 months.
This study evaluates the addition of a group based stabilization and skill-training intervention to individual out-patient treatment for long lasting post-traumatic reactions. Half of the participants will receive the combined treatment while the other half will receive individual treatment as usual.
the investigators will measure source-monitoring ability in patients with several neuropsychiatric condition and in healthy controls appaired in age, sex and educational level. Source-monitoring will be measured thanks to internal- and reality-monitoring informatic tasks.The investigators hypothesized patients with fronto-temporal abnormalities would show more marked deficits than patients with only frontal abnormalities.
Disturbances in glucose metabolism and glutamate neurotransmission feature in the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders. Ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that restricts glucose and forces metabolism of ketones, which serve as alternative energy substrates for the brain. KD is an established treatment for intractable epilepsy. However, we lack the randomized controlled trials (RCT) evidence regarding potential effects of KD on psychotic symptoms in humans. This randomised, controlled pilot study aims to investigate: 1. feasibility of a Modified Ketogenic Diet (MKD) intervention protocol in psychotic inpatients, 2. potential impact of MKD intervention on psychotic symptoms, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and functioning in patients with psychotic symptoms / psychotic disorder. A 6-week randomised KD pilot study will be carried out in psychotic inpatients (aimed n=40) at Niuvanniemi Hospital and Kuopio University Hospital, Finland. In the KD group, carbohydrate consumption is limited to 15-20 g/day to activate ketosis. The control group will have their ordinary hospital meals. A number of different assessment will be carried out at time points 0, 1 week, 3 weeks and 6 weeks.

Electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) is still actual for treatment of psychiatric symptoms. Headache is a very common symptom after this application. The investigators compare the effect of two different drugs for the treatment of headache after ECT.
REM Behavior Sleep Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder causing people to 'act out' their dreams. A high percentage of individuals with idiopathic RBD (iRBD) are known to develop conditions affecting the neurons in the brain such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Based on the increased risk to develop PD, individuals with iRBD are currently considered ideal candidates for therapies that can possibly protects brain cells, due to the critical window of opportunity to intervene early before brain cell loss progresses significantly. Early changes of PD are associated with a number of symptoms including loss of smell, constipation, anxiety and depression. In addition, early heart and brain abnormalities can be visualized using specialized imaging techniques called 123I-MIBG myocardial scintigraphy (MIBG) and dopamine transporter (DAT) single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) respectively. The combined presence of certain symptoms and the use of these imaging techniques are considered early markers of PD in individuals with iRBD. In other conditions, like heart failure, MIBG abnormalities are reversed by drugs able to block excessive adrenergic stimulation, known as beta-blockers. In this study the investigators want to learn about the effect of treatment with the beta-blocker carvedilol on MIBG abnormalities found in iRBD patients at risk to develop PD. The investigators believe that reversing the MIBG abnormality might prelude to a slowing of the neurodegenerative process. This drug is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for congestive heart failure, hypertension and left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction. However, carvedilol is not approved by the FDA in patients with iRBD at risk for PD. The available doses for this drug oral formulations are 3.125mg, 6.25mg, 12.5mg and 25mg. Changes visualized with the MIBG imaging technique will be correlated to the presence and severity of neurological (i.e. tremors, stiffness, slow movements, walking difficulties) and other symptoms associated with PD (i.e. abnormal smell, constipation, depression, color vision abnormalities), as measured by specific clinical scales and exams.
This study aims to provide preventative intervention to 60 women who are at risk of common mental disorders in Hong Kong.
The study compares the effects of two add-on interventions in primary care rehabilitation, on work ability and psychological health, in workers with common mental disorders. One intervention consists of a person-centered plan using work-directed treatment modules of occupational therapy and physical therapy, during 8 weeks. The other intervention consists of supported physical activity during 8 weeks. The primary outcome is work ability, measured by the work ability index and days on sick leave.
Individual placement support (IPS) is an evidence-based supported employment model for people with severe mental illness, designed to achieve employment in mainstream competitive jobs, either part-time or full-time. The aim of this study is to assess the (i) effectiveness of embedding the (IPS)/Peer Support intervention as part of the primary care centre in securing employment of adults living in the downtown eastside in comparison to the usual treatment WorkBC (control group). (ii) effectiveness of IPS/Peer Support versus the usual treatment (WorkBC) in improving mental illness, quality of life and personal recovery through participation in employment.
