Filter by:Objectives: 1. To determine whether paroxetine can prevent major depression in patients with hepatitis C (HCV) who are receiving pegylated-interferon (Peg-IFN). 2. To determine whether paroxetine can prevent subsyndromal increases in depression and anxiety in patients with HCV who are receiving Peg-IFN. 3. To determine whether paroxetine can prevent a significant change in the health related quality of life in patients with HCV who are receiving Peg-IFN. 4. To determine whether paroxetine improves compliance with Peg-IFN therapy for HCV. 5. To determine whether paroxetine enables patients to complete Peg-IFN therapy for HCV who might otherwise require a dose reduction or discontinuation because of neuropsychiatric side effects.
The purpose of the study is to assess whether treatment with SR58611A can prevent relapse of depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder. Relapse will be assessed using the MADRS scale.Patients who demonstrate improvement in depressive symptoms at the end of the initial 12-week open-label treatment period with SR58611A are randomized to continue SR58611A or switch to placebo under double blind conditions for up to 52 weeks of additional treatment. The secondary objective is to evaluate the safety of SR58611A in patients with MDD.
Oral administration of escitalopram during 8 weeks; PET scan with 18F-FDG at inclusion and after 8 weeks
STUDY OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of acamprosate versus placebo in the treatment of alcohol dependence in adults with co-occurring mood or anxiety disorders (specifically, depression (MDE), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or social anxiety disorder). Secondary objectives are to evaluate the effect of acamprosate treatment on mood and anxiety disorders. STUDY DESIGN: This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating acamprosate in the treatment of alcohol dependence in adult outpatients with concurrent mood and/or anxiety disorders. The active study phase will be 12 weeks in duration. There will be a two-week screening period, followed by 12 weeks of study medication and a follow-up assessment at 14 weeks from randomization. STUDY POPULATION: A total of 90 (30 per site) men and women aged 18-60 years who have a current diagnosis of alcohol dependence as well as a current DSM-IV diagnosis of either MDE, GAD and/or social anxiety will be recruited to participate in this study. Only those individuals whose psychiatric disorders are stable will be randomized to acamprosate or placebo. Three sites will participate in this trial. TREATMENTS: Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to receive either acamprosate or matching placebo for 12 weeks. EFFICACY ASSESSEMENTS: The primary efficacy outcome measure will be cumulative days abstinent as measured by self-report.
We examined the hypotheses that severely depressed inpatients treated for 5 weeks with IPT-S plus pharmacotherapy have 1) a higher reduction in depressive symptoms and 2) higher response- and remission rates compared to pharmacotherapy plus CM. For the follow-up period (12 months) we hypothesized a better symptomatic and psychosocial longterm outcome and lower rates of relapse for patients initially treated with combination therapy.
Major depression is a widely spread health problem in Canada. Recent research suggests a potential role for religion/spirituality in the prevention of and recovery from depression in adults. The purpose this study was to assess the efficacy of a home-based Spirituality Teaching Program for adults in the treatment of major depression. The objectives of the study were to determine: 1. whether the Spirituality Teaching Program is efficacious in improving depression severity, response rate, and remission rate in adults, 2. whether efficacy is maintained long term (over a 16 week period).
We investigate whether the add-on specific antitoxoplasmatic medication has positive effects in individuals with schizophrenia or major depression seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii (TG) infection. As TG modulates neurotransmitter metabolism affecting serotonin and dopamine we hypothesize that this chronic persistent infection might play a role for depressive and psychotic symptomatology. Therefore, on the basis of an ex juvantibus approach, specific anti TG medication might further improve psychiatric symptomatology in affected patients. This is investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized treatment trial.
The main purpose of this study is to correlate brain testing with treatment outcome.
Depressed patients will have hearing tests and then be treated with up to three treatments (i.e., Fluoxetine, Imipramine) until remitted, to see whether test results predict specific outcomes.
Relatively drug naive patients will receive two antidepressant medications as initial treatment.
