A Retrospective Analysis of Pancreatic Injuries and Treatment Outcomes

The goal of this observational study is to compare the presentation, treatment, and outcomes in patients suffering traumatic pancreatic injuries from blunt or penetrating trauma. The questions this study aims to answer are: 1. Does a statistically significant association exist between pancreatic injury grade and the following individual factors: - Mortality - Morbidity - Injury severity score 2. Is there an association between post-operative pancreatic complications and operation-specific intervention? 3. Does pancreatic injury score correlate with certain intra-abdominal organ injuries? Participants meeting criteria are greater than 18 years old, with no history of pancreatic surgery who were hospitalized at Kern Medical Center after presenting to the institution's emergency department as tier 1 or 2 trauma activations following blunt or penetrating abdominal injury and were diagnosed with pancreatic injury during the same hospitalization.

Microbiological Spectrum of the Intraperitoneal Surface After Elective Right-sided Colon Cancer

Despite performing colonic surgery with strict asepsia measures, minimizing the contact of the colon lumen with the peritoneum, some contamination is nearly impossible to avoid. In stapled anastomosis, the hole opened in the colon is minimum, just the necessary for introducing the parts of the mechanical devices. In handsewn anastomosis, the colonic lumen is more exposed to the peritoneum, despite the colonic occlusion with clamps meanwhile the suture is performed. Hypothesis: After stapled anastomoses, the peritoneal contamination should be lower than after handsewn ones.

Intraoperative Fluid Management in Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of 'high' versus 'low' volume intraoperative fluid administration (Ringer Lactate, RL) on intra- and postoperative parameters, in obese patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery (i.e., gastric bypass), in order to establish evidence-based data for perioperative fluid management in this patient population. Based on their experience as well as several reports in the literature, the investigators hypothesized that a restrictive approach to intraoperative hydration will reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and the recovery time of gastrointestinal (GI) function, and shorten hospital stay.

Study Comparing Tigecycline Versus Ceftriaxone Sodium Plus Metronidazole in Complicated Intra-abdominal Infection (cIAI)

This is a study of the safety and efficacy of tigecycline to ceftriaxone sodium plus metronidazole in hospitalized subjects with cIAI. Subjects will be followed for efficacy through the test-of-cure assessment. Safety evaluations will occur through the treatment and post-treatment periods and continue through resolution or stability of the adverse event(s).
