Filter by:Some persons with intellectual disability or comprehensive cerebral palsy cannot communicate unequivocally how they are, how they react to situations and people, whether they are in pain or experience discomfort, anger or fear. Their modes of communication (sounds, grimacing etc) may be unintelligible or ambiguous to their caregivers. With the use of heart and/or respiration monitors the investigators aim to give these persons a means to communicate their immediate reactions or responses. The respiration monitor is meant to register sleep at night, so that the participants can communicate whether they have slept well or not the previous night.
The objectives of this project are to to build sustainable regional communities of Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD) stakeholders to provide ongoing input to research priorities, methodological processes, and relevant person-centered health outcomes; leverage existing Special Olympic infrastructure to nationally disseminate the toolkit in order to increase participation and engagement in research and improve health outcomes; conduct comparative effectiveness trials that incorporate people with IDD focusing on their research priorities.
There is no current research to support the efficacy of a combination of equine-assisted activities (EAA) and brain building activities to influence motor skill competencies in youth with neurodevelopmental disorders (ND). The primary objective of this study was to quantify changes in motor skill proficiency before and after 8 weeks of EAA and brain-building activities in youth with ND. A secondary objective was to quantify changes in motor skill proficiency before and after 1 year of EAA and brain-building activities in youth with ND.
Introduction : Intellectual Disability (ID) is the most common cause of referral in the pediatric genetic centers and is characterized by an extreme genetic heterogeneity corresponding to a myriad of rare diseases that complicates the identification of ID's. Overall today in France, for non-syndromic ID affected patients, the Fra-X detection, the chromosomal microarray analysis and Gene Panel Strategy of 44 ID selected genes leads to a global diagnostic yield for 1/3 patients leaving 2/3 of patients still with no diagnosis. The advent, and burst, of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies has clearly revolutionized the approaches to diagnosis and research in the field of rare diseases at an international. That's why the main hypothesis of DEFIDIAG is that Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) could allow to improve the diagnostic performance and cost-effectiveness for French patients with ID. Objective : The main objective of this study is to compare ther percentage of genetic causal diagnosis identified in ID patients by performing trio WGS analysis vs the use of the current French reference strategy (ACPA, X-Fra, DI 44). Methods and design : This is a prospective study. The investigators expect to include 1275 index case with his/her 2 biological unaffected parents.
The investigators propose to investigate Microbiota Transfer Therapy (MTT) for treating patients with Pitt Hopkins Syndrome (PTHS) and gastrointestinal problems similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). MTT involves a combination of 10 days of oral vancomycin (an antibiotic to kill pathogenic bacteria), followed by a bowel cleanse, followed by 12 weeks of Fecal Microbiota (FM).
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Therapeutic Recreation Activities on Emotional Adjustment of Adolescents With Intellactual Disabilities. The research was carried out at Meram Melike Hatun Special Education Vocational School in Konya. The study took place between March 2019 and May 2019. The parents of the participants who participated in the study consisted of the experimental group (n = 17) and the remaining parents (n = 17) formed the control group and the sample group (n = 34). The personal information form which measures demographic characteristics developed by the researchers according to the literature, and Hacettepe Emotional Adjustment Scale were used. Data were analyzed in SPSS 22 program. According to Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z test, sample group was not normal. For this reason, non-parametric tests were performed. In descriptive data, the mean, number, percentage will be used; Comparative statistics were made according to the assumptions of non-parametric test (Wilcoxon test, Mann Whitney U test). Therapeutic Recreation Activities was applied as total of 16 sessions, consisting of two sessions per week and each session lasting about 1 hour. The program was implemented by researcher.
The main objective of this project is to enhance physical activity in youths and adults with intellectual disabilities (IDs) by developing and testing a tailored e-heath support for motivation and participation in physical activity.
Adults with intellectual disabilities have great difficulty in adapting to social situations and relationships. Cognitive impairment associated with intellectual disability are important factors to understand their difficulties in processing social information. In the field of recognition of facial emotions in particular, basic cognitive processes such as visuospatial and attentional functions, are heavily involved. Cognitive remediation is a management tool widely used by practitioners to help patients who experience cognitive difficulties. Currently, no program can meet specific and validated the problems are adults with intellectual disabilities manner in their daily functioning
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a self-monitoring intervention to improve shopping performance in adults with intellectual disability (ID) secondary to Down syndrome (DS). The research question asks, can an 8-week self-monitoring intervention, provided in a community-based setting, increase observable shopping skills in adults with ID secondary to DS?
The purpose of this study is to help individuals and their caregivers develop a plan on how to recognize, deal with and respond to abusive situations.
