Filter by:Influenza is a serious disease which can cause severe illness and even death among patients. Health care workers (HCWs) often get infected with influenza and up to 76% of them keep working while being ill. Immunizing HCWs is therefore an essential factor in protecting patients from influenza as HCWs easily transmit influenza to their patients. However, despite recommendations from the Dutch Health Council since 2007, vaccine uptake among HCWs remains low. The aim of this study is to develop an effective implementation strategy on the basis of previous behavioural studies and to evaluate its value in a clustered randomized trial in all Dutch University Medical Centers (UMCs). Also, we want to assess the program elements that are associated with a higher vaccine uptake and the cost-effectiveness of such an implementation strategy. The results of this study will give more insights in the way influenza vaccination campaigns should be directed in order to achieve high vaccine uptake rates among HCWs in hospitals.
The aim of the study is to assess the safety profile of a quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) and to demonstrate that 3 different industrial lots of QIV induce an equivalent immune response in children/adolescents (9 to 17 years of age) and adults (18 to 60 years of age). Primary Objective: - To describe the safety profile (injection site reactions and systemic events) of each vaccine during the 21 days following vaccination, and serious adverse events (including adverse events of special interest) throughout the study in all adult and child/adolescent participants. Secondary Objectives: - To demonstrate that the 3 different industrial lots of quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) induce an equivalent immune response at 21 days post-vaccination in both age groups (lot consistency) - To describe the compliance of the immunogenicity of QIV to the European Medicines Agency Note for Guidance (NfG) (CPMP/BWP/214/96) in each age group.
Much of community transmission of seasonal and pandemic influenza occurs in younger individuals, because of their susceptibility and their social interaction patterns.Universities are places where transmission of influenza is facilitated because of the age of individuals involved, their close contact with each other, and low vaccination coverage. Staying home when you are sick (i.e., voluntary sequestration) has been identified as one of the most efficient ways to reduce influenza transmission, but there are still insufficient data on the effects of social distancing to be able to make recommendations for future pandemics or even outbreaks of seasonal influenza. The investigators are conducting a study on the effect of voluntary sequestration during illness on the transmission of influenza among social networks in University residence housing units at the University of Michigan. The sequestration interventions will be carried out during a period of influenza transmission that is defined by surveillance conducted at the University Health Service. Data will be collected on use of the interventions and the occurrence of influenza and other illnesses. In all selected residence halls, specimens will be collected when illness meeting a case definition for influenza-like illness occurs. This study in a university population will evaluate the acceptability and magnitude of effect that can be expected from such an intervention, and determine the number of days that sequestration should be practiced.
This is a single blinded placebo controlled phase I study, to assess the safety and immunogenicity of co-administration of the candidate influenza vaccine MVA-NP+M1 with seasonal influenza vaccine. All volunteers recruited will be adults aged 50 and over. The rationale behind co-administration of MVA-NP+M1 with a seasonal influenza vaccine (TIV) is that the immune system will be stimulated to produce both influenza specific T cells and influenza specific antibodies.
The purpose of this study is to determine the immunogenicity and tolerability of one 0.5 mL intramuscular (IM) injection of FLUVAL AB-like trivalent influenza vaccine containing 6μgHA of seasonal A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B influenza antigens in adults and elderly people.
A study to evaluate the humoral immune response 3 weeks after vaccination with Inflexal V according to the CHMP criteria in elderly subjects for the 2011/2012 WHO recommended vaccine strains, to evaluate immunogenicity parameters 6 months after vaccination for the 3 vaccine strains and to assess the cross-protection against 4 selected circulating heterogeneous A/H1N1 influenza strains 3 weeks after influenza vaccination versus baseline.
The main purpose of this study is to see if patients with the flu would receive oseltamivir treatment more quickly if it were prescribed by a pharmacist as compared to a physician, and to see if there is any difference in the effect of treatment on flu symptoms and overall health. Another reason for doing the study is to see how accurately pharmacists can diagnose the flu as compared to physicians. Viruses that are exposed to antiviral medications (like oseltamivir) sometimes develop a resistance to the medication. This means that the medication is no longer as effective in treating the symptoms caused by the virus. The development of viral resistance to oseltamivir will also be followed in this study.
Using desk location information and employees' building entry/exit swipe card data from a company that offered a free 2-day worksite influenza vaccination clinic, we separately identify the vaccination effects of base proximity—the inverse of walking distance between one's desk and the clinic—and functional proximity—the likelihood of passing near the clinic during the course of a normal work day (ie, days when the clinic is not open).
The safety of parenterally administrated investigational vaccine (commercial influenza vaccine formulated with adjuvant Matrix M) in healthy adults (age 18-50) and healthy elderly (age 65-75), will be investigated in the study. Moreover, the study aims to study parameters associated with improved protection against clinical disease in elderly. Such parameters include HI-titres, a balanced Th1/Th2 response as well as a functional cellular immune response. Vaccination will start in 22 healthy adults receiving the investigational vaccine. Vaccination of elderly will be initiated only after demonstration of safety in adults. 88 healthy elderly volunteers will be vaccinated, 44 will receive the seasonal influenza vaccine alone and 44 will receive the investigational vaccine. Vaccines will be administrated intramuscularly in the upper arm. One dose will be administered to each volunteer included in the study. Blood samples for basic immunological assessments of cellular and humoral immunity will be taken at day 0, 7, 28, 90 and 150. The investigational vaccine is equal to one standard human dose of a commercial seasonal influenza vaccine to which 50 µg of adjuvant Matrix M has been added.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the immunogenicity and the safety of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Biologicals' investigational quadrivalent split virion influenza vaccine FLU-Q-QIV in adults 18 years of age and older.
