The prevalence and incidence of end-stage renal disease in Taiwan ranks highest in the world, and it is based on the 2018 health welfare According to statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in Taiwan. As the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progresses, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, inflammation, and physical and psychological symptoms (such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression) will increase, which will further damage the structure and function of the kidney Intensified, increasing the demand for dialysis treatment and the risk of cardiovascular disease, which consumes social and medical costs. If the investigators can intervene in a feasible measure to effectively regulate the autonomic nervous function of CKD patients, reduce inflammation and physical and psychological symptoms, and delay the progression of the disease, it will be the main goal of caring for CKD patients. Effect of 8-week Intake of 2S-hesperidin on Performance, Body Composition and Biochemicals Markers in Amateur Cyclists

This clinical study evaluates the effect of 500 mg of 2S-hesperidin for 8 weeks on performance (power generated in different metabolic zones), body composition (fat and muscle mass) and biochemical (antioxidant, inflammatory status) and metabolic (capillary blood in finger) markers in amateur cyclists. Our hypothesis is that chronic intake of 2S-hesperidin can improve performance (maximum power generated). To justify this hypothesis, we measured the parameters mentioned above, which could establish a cause-effect relationship between 2S-hesperidin intake and possible yield improvement.

Regional anesthesia and analgesia may maintain immune function, reduce surgical stress, and also reduce volatile anesthetics and opioids requirements. Local anesthetic drugs used in regional anesthesia and analgesia work to have anti-proliferative and cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. Pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha increase in levels in peripheral nerves, spinal cord, brain (brain stem, locus sereleus, thalamus, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex) after peripheral nerves are injured. The anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 is decreased in levels after peripheral nerve injury. The balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines affects the severity of pain.

In this study, we investigate the role that deep sleep plays in the prevention of posttraumatic stress disorder after someone has been exposed to a trauma by boosting deep sleep with two drug conditions compared to placebo condition. Omega-3 to Reduce Diabetes Risk in Subjects With High Number of Particles That Carry "Bad Cholesterol" in the Blood

In this project, investigators explored the role of the particles that carry "bad cholesterol" in the blood (termed LDL) that are known to promote heart disease, in the promotion of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in humans. In specific, they investigated how these particles may induce the activation of an immune pathway in human fat tissue leading to multiple anomalies that favors T2D. They also explored whether omega-3 fatty acids, which are the type of fat found in fish oils can counterbalance the negative effects of LDL in fat tissue, thus providing a natural way to help reduce the risk for T2D in subjects with elevated blood LDL. To do so, 41 subjects who were free of disease or medication affecting metabolism were enrolled at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute between 2013 and 2019 and were placed on an intervention with omega-3 fatty acids supplementation for 12 weeks (2.7 g/day, Triple Strength Omega-3 from Webbers Naturals). Investigators examined the effects of LDL and omega-3 on risk factors for T2D before and after the intervention in the whole body and specifically in fat tissue biopsies taken from the hip region. Eighty percent of the subjects who were enrolled into the study completed the intervention.
