Filter by:Anti-viral treatment in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a Phase II, placebo-controlled, 52-week trial using oral valacyclovir 4 g/day in 50 HSV seropositive, AD biomarker-positive, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients (eMCI and lMCI). The trial will directly address the long-standing viral etiology hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) which posits that viruses, particularly the very common herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV1) and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV2), may be etiologic or contribute to the pathology of AD. This trial will intervene at an earlier stage (MCI). We will compare the repurposed drug valacyclovir to placebo in patients with amnestic MCI (eMCI and lMCI) in a randomized, double-blind, two-arm parallel group 52-week pilot trial. Our Phase II trial will be the first antiviral drug trial conducted in MCI.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term immune responses to the Herpes Zoster subunit (HZ/su) vaccine as well as safety up to 7 years after the 2-dose primary vaccination course from study ZOSTER-041 (NCT02058589). This study also assessed immune responses as well as safety after revaccination with 2 additional doses of the HZ/su administered at 6 to 8 years after the 2-dose primary vaccination course.
The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and immunogenicity of GSK Biologicals' HZ/su vaccine when given on a two-dose schedule to adults aged 50 years and above who have had a previous episode of shingles.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory state of the gastrointestinal tract(1) affecting 1.6-3.1 million people in the United States. Patients with IBD are treated with immunosuppressants that increase their risk of herpes zoster (HZ), also known as shingles. Those with IBD have a two-fold increased risk for HZ compared to age matched controls. Because most IBD patients are treated with systemic immunosuppressants, which are an independent risk factor for HZ, the live attenuated HZ vaccine was not recommended. However, the release of the new inactivated HZ vaccine, Shingrix (GlaxoSmithKline), presents new opportunities for preventive care.
Anti-viral therapy in Alzheimer's disease will investigate the efficacy of treating patients with mild Alzheimer's disease with the U.S.A marketed generic anti-viral drug Valtrex (valacyclovir, 500mg oral tablet). Valacyclovir, titrated to 4 grams per day, repurposed to treat Alzheimer's disease, will be compared to matching placebo in the treatment of 130 mild AD patients (65 valacyclovir, 65 placebo) who test positive for herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV1) or herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV2). The study will be a randomized, double-blind, 18-month Phase II proof of concept trial.
This is a multi-center, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled clinical trial of suppressive valacyclovir for one year in immunocompetent study participants with an episode of dendriform epithelial keratitis, stromal keratitis, endothelial keratitis, and/or iritis due to Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus (HZO) in the year prior to enrollment.
Methadone treatment has became one of main actions taken in China to control the spread of HIV among drug users. However, the average methadone dose used is relatively low. An intensive methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) provider training on methadone dosage may be effective in increasing the methadone dose levels prescribed to new patients. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of a tailored education program for MMT service providers using subsequent methadone dose prescribed to new patients. The effects of methadone dose, with and without the inclusion of additional psychosocial services, will then be measured through MMT retention and illicit opioid use.
This trial is to determine the safety of valacyclovir in persons with chronic hepatitis C and herpes simplex type 2 infection. Participants will be randomized to valacyclovir or matching placebo. After receiving the initial therapy for eight weeks, the participants will cross over to the alternate therapy for an additional eight weeks. Each treatment period will be separated by a two-week period of daily placebo. The hypothesis is that treatment with valacyclovir will result in a significant reduction in serum levels of hepatitis C virus ribonucleic acid.
The purpose of this study is to see if valacyclovir (Valtrex) is a safe and effective treatment for ano-genital HSV infections (herpes simplex virus infections of the anus and external genitals) in HIV-infected patients.
To evaluate the efficacy of topical corticosteroids in treating herpes simplex stromal keratitis in conjunction with topical trifluridine. To evaluate the efficacy of oral acyclovir in treating herpes simplex stromal keratitis in patients receiving concomitant topical corticosteroids and trifluridine. To evaluate the efficacy of oral acyclovir in treating herpes simplex iridocyclitis in conjunction with treatment with topical corticosteroids and trifluridine.
