Filter by:The aim of this study is to do an evaluation of the clinical profile of depression in HCV patients (newly diagnosed and treatment naïve), and in these same individuals, 24 weeks after the beginning of IFN+Ribavirin therapeutics (n=100). To characterize depression associated to HCV with and without interferon (IFN), the investigators will use clinical, behavioral, biochemical and genetic markers, and to distinguish their different symptomatologic dimensions. The control group will be composed by 100 individuals with Major Depression diagnosis, and not from the general population, because the investigators are not trying to study the incidence of depression in general population, but to characterize the clinical profile of patients with HCV (IFN+Ribavirin) compared to major depression. Thus, the investigators will total 300 evaluations in 200 individuals, 100 from each group, and considering that the clinical group will be evaluated before the therapeutics and re-evaluated 24 weeks after its beginning. Hypotheses 1. Depression in individuals affected by HCV is associated to genetic vulnerability. 2. Genetic vulnerability increases the risk of depression when IFN therapeutics is used. 3. Depression associated to infection by HCV presents a symptomatological profile that is different from general depression, which is maintained with IFN therapeutics. 4. A higher state of depression in the beginning of a treatment, if not treated, is a risk factor to abandoning therapeutics. 5. When comparing genders, women present a more severe symptomatological profile than men.
The use of oral aCD3 Monoclonal antibody (MAb) alone in subjects with hepatitis C is justified on the basis of scientific and medical reasons. There are data in multiple animal models that aCD3-alone confers efficacy in models of inflammatory or autoimmune disease and induces regulatory T cells and immune-modulation as desired in clinical studies. These observations are reinforced by data in the Phase 1 clinical study showing that aCD3-alone induced the desired immune-modulation in terms of immunological markers for regulatory T cells and appropriate rises and declines in certain cytokine levels.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects and safety of Adefovir Dipivoxil plus polyene phosphatidylcholine compared to Adefovir Dipivoxil alone in patients with chronic hepatitis B.
This is a Phase 4, descriptive, observational, open, prospective study of patients who their doctor prescribes INFERGEN for clinical practice. No medication was provided by the sponsor. The planned observation time is 48 weeks and 24 weeks of follow-up. Each investigator participating in this registry will employ his or her discretion and standard clinical practice to determine when to see the patient in the clinic, how to manage the patient's drug regimen, and how best to monitor the patient's response and tolerance to therapy.
The investigators will identify possible participants using our database of previously treated hepatitis c patients. The investigators will identify those who have documented evidence of current injecting drug use as a risk factor for acquisition of the virus. The investigators will then search for those who have received curative treatment between 2004-2010. This covers all patients in the current database. The investigators will include those over 18 years old. The investigators will exclude those patients who are coinfected with either hepatitis B or HIV. This is because both of these conditions can accelerate liver damage when in combination with hepatitis c. The possible participants identified will be sent an information sheet giving a simple and clear outline of the proposed research. The investigator will try to obtain an au to date residential address from the PAS system in the NHS or through confirmation from the patients GP or drug worker. It will explain the purpose of the study, why they have been chosen, what taking part will involve, the potential advantages and disadvantages of taking part and that everything will be kept confidential. It will also outline who is conducting the study, how any expenses will be paid and contact details for any problems/complaints that arise. Those interested in taking part will attend an appointment at the hospital after they have had the opportunity to read through the information leaflet. They will be given time to ask any questions they have about the study and have them answered fully. They will then be asked to sign two copies of a consent form in order to take their participation any further. Once this is complete they can have their first 'liver assessment'. The assessment will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete. The investigators will take three blood samples from them (approximately 10mls of blood or 4 teaspoons full). One sample is to measure the levels of hepatitis C virus in the blood. This will tell us whether there has been reinfection with hepatitis C. The second sample is to measure the levels of inflammation within the liver and the third sample is to measure the full blood count. The investigators will then perform a liver scan called a fibroscan. This is a noninvasive test similar to an ultrasound (that pregnant women have) and gives a reading that can tell us about any 'stiffness' in the liver. It takes approximately five to ten minutes to complete and involves the patient lying on their back with their right arm above their head for the duration of the scan. Following the scan the investigators will ask the participant to complete a short questionnaire. This will include questions about past and current drug use as well as any alcohol use. The answers will be kept strictly confidential. They will be stored in the researchers locked office and have no direct participant identifiers on them. They will simply have a study number on them.The participant will then be thanked for their time and offered £30 to cover all travel and time expenses for their visit. They will be invited to attend for a further liver assessment one year after their first one and annually thereafter. This is optional and they are of course free to withdraw from the study at any time without needing to give a reason. The investigators will be identifying participants at different points in time following their curative treatment. For example some will have been cured 5 year ago whereas other will have been cured 6-12 months ago. This will increase the number of patient years follow up. Once the investigators have done the first set of liver assessment the participants will then be followed prospectively for as long as they wish to participate. For the purpose of my higher degree I will present the data I have following two years of 'liver assessments'.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the difference in frequency and level of liver function disturbance between patients on efavirenz based ART, and patients on nevirapine based ART in HBV and HCV co-infected patients, (and/or with patients with abnormal liver function prior to ART), in China. Liver function tests will be measured at baseline and follow-up.
The study is aimed to investigate the safety, tolerability and efficacy of a fixed dose combination therapy of: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), Pegylated Interferon Alpha-2a (PEG-IFN alpha-2a) and Ribavirin (RBV) in Chronic Hepatitis C Genotype 1 Infected adult subjects who failed to respond following a course of PEG-IFN and RBV Therapy.
Persistent replication of HBV (47-55%) is frequently found in patients with HCC, which in turn leads to deterioration of liver reserve. Moreover, a large proportion of HCC patients who underwent curative therapy died from progressive liver decompensation rather than recurrence of cancer. It had been proved that anti-viral therapy for hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC patients could reduce the rate of tumor recurrence after surgical resection. This is a prospective study to evaluate the efficacy of ETV therapy in chronic hepatitis B patients after receiving RFA therapy for HCC.

Studies rarely address the issues of improving host factors. The current study examines 1. Does 3 months therapy with Vitamin D+ Peg + Ribavirin could improve viral response and shorten treatment duration (from 24 weeks to 12 weeks) 2. whether Vitamin D levels predicts negative treatment outcome.
