Filter by:The overall objective is to evaluate objective dual-task turning measures for use as rehabilitative outcomes and as tools for return-to-duty assessments in individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).This project consists of three goals examining the I) Diagnostic Accuracy, II) Predictive Capacity, and III) Responsiveness to Intervention of dual task turning measures in individuals with mTBI. The investigators hypothesize that objective measures of dual-task turning will have high diagnostic accuracy, predictive capacity, and responsiveness to intervention in people with mTBI.
This study analyzed the effect of different modalities of dual-task training in the improvement of gait biomechanics, postural balance, falls episodes, executive functioning, and quality of life in community-dwelling older adults. Half of the participants have undertaken a dual-task protocol training with progression from variable-priority to fixed-priority instructions, while the other half have undertaken a dual-task protocol training under variable-priority instructions.
No one disputes that fetal sucking in the womb is a natural human right. Available information on whether, how and when to stop children's sucking habits comes from popular cultural misunderstandings and lack of sound evidence-based results. Because Western countries regard thumb or pacifier (dummy) sucking after a given age as a shameful habit, parents feel stressed, anxious and even guilty for being unable to induce their children to stop non-nutritive sucking (NNS) habits or drag their unwilling child off the soothing-devices, such as pacifiers. Pacifier sucking substantially decreases the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome, reduces pain and crying, and prolongs sleeping time. Of major interest is the hypothesis that NNS improves proprioceptive and exteroceptive development including gait in big mammals (rhesus monkeys). Despite these benefits, available information claims the possible risks induced by prolonging NNS, including psychological shortfall, delayed language skills or dental problems. Despite these claims, authoritative clinical organizations worldwide reach no consensus on the appropriate age at which NNS habits should be stopped. Prompted by conflicting information from primary studies and reviews designed to balance the benefits and risks of NNS habits, our aim in this pilot open randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to test the efficacy of NNS in improving balance and gait in children enrolled at 12-42 months and followed for three years.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of specially produced insoles on biomechanical and gait parameters in children with Sever's disease.
This is a pilot, double-blind, randomised trial that investigates which gait parameters are more sensitive following a single bolus injection of hyaluronic acid with mannitol, hyaluronic acid with sorbitol, or saline placebo for knee osteoarthritis. Outcome measures are gait analysis through a inertial sensors (Physilog), Knee Society Score (KSS), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) activity-scale and EuroQol 5Dimensions. Follow-up will be of 4 weeks.
Motor control, notably expressed through the complexity of the variability of the locomotor pattern, is disturbed at the central level by an apprehension of pain and movement, more than pain itself (or by biomechanical / structural damage of the spine) in chronic low back pain (cLBP) patients. The aim of this study is to control that variability is reduced during gait at comfortable level and to test that distraction can reduce pain avoidance and therefore increase variability in cLBP patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in muscle fatigue and respiratory metabolic energy expenditure during walking with wearable hip-assist robot (V3).
The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate changes in gait, balance, fine motor function, and muscle tone, and (2) to find out if there is a correlation between muscle tone/presence of paratonia and motor function (gross and fine) in mild and moderate dementia.Three groups of participants were included in the study: healthy elderly (n=60), participants with mild dementia (n=31) and participants with moderate dementia (n=31). Measurements of fine motor function, balance, gait, presence of paratonia and muscle tone measurements were performed.
Music has a potential role in health care. In the geriatric population, music presents a non-pharmacological intervention which is easy to implement. Also, music has a potential role in order to improve patient's mobility. For example, it was also shown that the rhythmic component of music combined with physical exercise can improve gait variability which has been identified as a marker of gait instability and a fall predictor. This effect was previously shown in older community dwellers as a music-based intervention significantly improved gait and balance stability. Considering that music was shown to have a positive impact on communication, emotions and depressive symptoms this intervention has the potential to make our patients more conscious of their environment, leading to an improved mobility. Thus, the investigators hypothesize that patients who attend live music sessions (compared to controls) will demonstrate an improvement in their mobility measures. This effect could potentially be explained by the rhythmic effect of music and by the fact that live music sessions lead to an improved mood, communication, emotions, and an improved mobility. - The primary objective of this study will be to determine if participation to live music sessions will be associated with an improvement in mobility which will be measured using the Times Up and Go (TUG) and gait speed when compared to a control group. - The second objective of this study will be to determine if patients participating in live music sessions compared to a control group demonstrate an increase/improvement at the end of their music session in their mood (the Visual Analog Mood Scale (VAMS) will be used), in their positive emotions (the Observed Emotion Rating Scale (OERS) will be used) and communication behaviour (the CODEM (tool to assess communication behavior in dementia) instrument will be used). - The third objective of this study will be to perform a "feasibility study". By measuring the variation in the different scales which will be used (see the third objective), the investigators will be able to determine how many participants will be necessary for an eventual larger scale study. This will be a prospective open-label randomized control trial. The patients will be randomly assigned to a musical intervention or to a television intervention (control group). The patients will only attend one session in the context of this research project. Pre and post measures will be done.
