Filter by:With improved a five-day intensive, low-resistance elastic band exercise program to evaluate its effectiveness in improving total muscle mass, upper and lower extremity muscle strength, self-perceived fear of falling, and depression among hospitalized elderly individuals. This study is a random control trial. Data collection includes elderly patient's total muscle mass, upper and lower extremity muscle strength, self-perceived fear of falling, and depression among hospitalized. The total muscle mass and upper and lower extremity muscle strength will be calculated in kilograms.
The goal of this intervention study is to test the effects of a nurse-led mobility intervention (known as the OASIS Walking Intervention (Older Adults performing Sit to Stands and Walking Intervention)) in older adults with cognitive impairment, such as dementia, in transitional care programs. The main questions this study aims to answer are: - Is the study doable and are older adults satisfied with the intervention? - Does the intervention improve older adults' muscle strength, mobility, functional status and quality of life? Participants will be asked to do the following: 1. Be interviewed once so that a patient-centred communication care plan can be made 2. Do sit to stand activity 3. Walk as part of a walking program.
Sarcopenia characterised by loss of muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance burdens many older adults since the condition is related to functional decline. Periods of inactivity such as during hospitalisation leads to further functional decline. It has been reported that the loss of muscle mass associated with sarcopenia not only entails a decrease in muscle mass but also changes in muscle architecture. Knowledge on changes in muscle architecture is essential since it is one of the most important determinants on muscle strength and thus physical performance. The main objective of this study is to investigate changes in muscle architecture and physical performance during acute hospitalisation and after discharge in older adults and subsequently the effectiveness of resistance training of the lower limb during acute hospitalisation. If successful, our study could have a great impact on the individual, as well as societal level, due to a better understanding of the factors related to sarcopenia and the prevention of functional decline as a result of hospitalisation.
This study aims to address if robot assisted physical training can prevent functional decline during acute hospitalisation in older geriatric patients. Design: blinded RCT. Patients: n = 488. Primary outcome is functional decline, assessed by Barthel-Index and 30s chair stand test. One- and three months follow-up.
This prospective cohort study aims to determine the incidence of hospitalization-associated disability and its association with risk factors at the patient level and with care and hospital processes. For this, patients aged 70 years or older admitted for elective valve surgery or elective transcatheter aortic valve implantation or as a result of symptomatic moderate to severe valvular heart disease will be consecutively included from 01 October 2015 to 29 February 2016.
The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of a collaborative model of team care as compared to usual care in improving functional outcomes among community-dwelling low-income older adults.
