Filter by:The aim of the study is to evaluate the short- and medium-term effectiveness of additional moderate dynamic resistance and balance training to the CR-program of old adults after valve surgery or intervention compared to usual care-CR.
The aim of the prospective study is to assess the feasibility of a screening and baseline measurement protocol that is planned for a main study (PRÄP-GO) in a collective of 30 patients ageing 70+ scheduled for elective surgery. Comprehensive geriatric assessment scores and modified Fried frailty phenotype component evaluation are performed in all patients at baseline before elective surgery. The assessment of cognitive tests is conducted with a battery of neuropsychological tests, computer-based tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery [CANTAB®] and non-computer based tests. Frailty scores from 0 to 5 (i.e., 1 point for each component; 0 = best to 5 = worst) represent robust (0), pre-frail (1-2), and frail (3-5) health status. 10 patients without Frailty, 10 patients with Pre-Frailty and 10 patients with Frailty should be analyzed in this study and receive further comprehensive geriatric assessment testing up to seven days after surgery/discharge (before 7 postoperative days).
Sarcopenia and frailty are two major syndromes in older adults. They are shown to be associated with low levels of functioning and higher rates of morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aim to report the prevalence of sarcopenia and frailty by using simple assessment methods such as SARC-F and FRAIL, respectively.
It is an experimental, longitudinal prospective, controlled trial. The project will be developed in the General University Hospital of Valencia (CHGUV), and the University of Valencia. Patients will be recruited from a previous cohort. The patients of this cohort will be contacted and proposed to participate. Those patients who accept, will be divided into the following experimental groups: - Group 1: Patients in this group will perform the water exercise protocol, 3 times a week, for 12 weeks. - Group 2: Patients in this group will not perform any type of exercise during the 12 weeks of the treatment. Variables related to muscular quality by ultrasound, frailty, physical function, independence in the activities of daily life, balance, cognitive function, quality of life and sleep, the social sphere will be evaluated, and the intensity of pain and fatigue, before and after12 weeks of intervention.
Background: It has been demonstrated that pre-frailty has more adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery, however, data on prognosis and long-term evolution in pre-frailty patients after cardiac surgery without postoperative complications are still scarce. Design: To evaluate the impact of pre-frailty on functional survival in patients after cardiac surgery without complications.
Frailty is the main risk factor for the development of incident disability in older people and one of the most important for other adverse outcomes (death, hospitalisation, falls, and permanent institutionalisation). Although frailty is a frequent condition in older adults who attend hospitals, little is known about its true prevalence in different settings of care. Better knowledge of this issue will inform the rational design of more effective strategies aimed at providing fitted care for these patients. Thus, the current study will potentially have impact on the quality of care for frail patients by revealing the prevalence of frailty in different settings of care, the difficulties in detection and management of frailty in these settings and the best instruments to detect frailty. The investigators proposal brings together 6 partners in the European Union (EU) from three countries, with the common aim of studying the feasibility of a program to detect frail older patients in high risk clinical settings.
Frailty is a geriatric syndrome leading to physical deterioration including muscle wasting (sarcopenia) and unintentional weight loss. There are currently no approved therapies for frailty. Ghrelin is a hormone produced by the stomach that stimulates appetite centers in the brain. The investigators already know that a single dose of Ghrelin improves food intake immediately after the dose in frail older people. In addition, exercise programs have been shown to improve strength and function in older people. In this study, the investigators are trying to find out if a joint intervention of ghrelin and resistance training will improve walking, balance and leg strength in frail elderly people.
