Filter by:Primary care offers a promising setting for promoting parenting practices that shape healthy eating and physical activity behaviors of young children. This study assessed the impact of a parent-based, primary care intervention on the feeding habits, health behaviors, and body mass index (BMI) of 2-5 year olds with elevated or rapidly-increasing BMI. Four private pediatric offices in West Michigan were assigned as control (n=2) or intervention (n=2) sites based on patient load and demographics. Treatment families were recruited at well-child visits to receive physician health-behavior counseling and four visits with a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) over a 6-month period. Outcomes included percent of the 95th BMI percentile (%BMI95), the Family Nutrition and Physical Activity survey (FNPA), and the Feeding Practices and Structure Questionnaire (FPSQ).
In the nutrition guideline (A.S.P.E.N guideline), there was no recommendation about the feeding type in enteral feeding of critically ill patients. Continuous feeding is the most popular feeding type in ICU because of its less nursing burden and reducing the aspiration incidence theoretically. However, some previous studies demonstrated that there were no complications differences between continuous and time-restricted feedings(such as intermittent feedings). In ICU, the disorder of protein synthesis is a universal problem and is associated with ICU acquired weakness. Time-restricted feeding is more physical than continuous feeding. In some animal researches, time-restricted feeding was proved to have a greater stimulatory effect on protein synthesis than continuous feeding. Besides of light, time-restricted feeding can may also adjust the biological rhythms. It is known that biological clocks could affect energy metabolism, emotion and so on. Until now, there are no enough clinical studies to prove the advantages in time-restricted feeding in ICU patients.So researchers designed the study to compare the time-restricted feeding and continuous feeding effect(especially protein synthesis) on ICU patients.
The study uses a crossover design in which the portion size of food is varied at each meal. Across four test meals, subjects will be served four different portions of food, and intake will be determined from pre- and post-meal food weights. The first visit will be a screening visit, at which subjects will complete the consent form, have their height and weight measured, and rate the taste of the study food. Test meals will be scheduled once a week for four weeks. At visits 2-5, subjects will eat lunch and rate characteristics of the meal. At visit 6, subjects will complete various questionnaires. The objective of this study is to determine whether any individual characteristics related to satiety influence the effect of portion size on intake.
Objectives: To evaluate the impact of the meal time administered on the body weight of adult individuals of both sexes, being overweight and obese. Experimental design: randomized controlled trial. Place of research: Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. Materials and methods: Anthropometric data, blood pressure, waist diameter will be measured; venous blood samples will be collected and stored for glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, urea, creatinine and ALT in serum. Intervention: Wait at least 20 minutes after finishing the first portion of meals, previously considered sufficient by the individual before serving again. The control group will also serve the dish the same way, but you can serve additional portion without waiting. Measurements: P values less than 0.05 will be considered statistically significant. Expected results: Weight loss, decrease in anthropometric markers and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
This study aims to assess the impact of a home-visiting program, called "Family Spirit Nurture" (FSN), on reducing early childhood obesity in American Indian (AI) children. The FSN intervention targets parent feeding practices, young children's diet and physical activity (PA) and early childhood (0-2 years of age) weight status, all associated with risk for early childhood obesity and, consequently, risk for obesity over the life course. The investigators will also explore whether maternal psychosocial factors (stress, depression and substance use), household food/water security and/or constrained physical activity environments moderate FSN intervention impacts on: mother's feeding behaviors for infants and toddlers; and, children's diets, PA patterns, and weight status. Finally, the investigators will examine how maternal/infant characteristics, diet and behaviors impact the underlying biologic mechanisms of early childhood obesity and whether social and behavioral interventions can impact infant metabolic health. The investigators evaluation will employ a randomized controlled design, in which both the intervention and comparison condition receive assisted transportation to prenatal and well-baby visits (called "Optimized Standard Care"), and the comparison condition also receives potentially beneficial injury prevention education at 8 assessment visits. Primary Aims: Efficacy of Family Spirit Nurture (FSN) + Optimized Standard Care (OSC) versus Injury Prevention Education (IPE) + OSC will be assessed for each of the following from birth to 24 months postpartum: Aim 1. Mothers' implementation of recommended feeding behaviors. Hypothesis 1. FSN + OSC mothers will be more likely to meet breastfeeding and complementary feeding recommendations and engage in responsive parenting/feeding behaviors compared to IPE + OSC mothers. Aim 2. Children's consumption of healthy diet and physical activity engagement. Hypothesis 2. FSN + OSC children will consume more fruits and vegetables and fewer calories from sugar sweetened beverages (SSB), snacks and desserts, and they will have higher physical activity and reduced screen time/other sedentary activities compared to IPE + OSC children. Aim 3. Children's weight status. Hypothesis 3. Mean BMI z-scores for FSN + OSC children will be closer to zero (the mean age- and sex- specific BMI z-score for the World Health Organization standard reference population) compared to IPE + OSC children.
This is a randomized trial of use of a mobile health tool (EpxBreastfeeding) aimed at improving breastfeeding adherence and duration among recent mothers who self identify as motivated to breastfeed. As a result of text communication and expedited coaching through common breastfeeding challenges, the investigators expect more mothers in the study arm will continue breastfeeding through the first 6 months after giving birth.
Breastfeeding is recommended as the ideal form of nutrition for newborns and infants at least for the first 6 months of life by several Institutions such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). When breastfeeding is not possible or not desirable, bottle-feeding, in most cases using a proper infant formula, is the right alternative. Both facial and cranial growth and development rely on genetic and external stimuli; the latter are provided also by activities of sucking, swallowing and chewing. Considering this, it is important to show the differences between the activities of the muscles (masseter, temporalis and buccinator) in charge of sucking during breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. The activities of the muscles were evaluated through SLI, which consists of the assessment of muscle functioning by analyzing the displacement of a defined point on a given muscle. This displacement is tracked over time with respect to a fixed frame of reference, thus providing velocity data (i.e. speed) for a certain point on the muscle during muscle contraction. The use of SLI allowed us to determine the activity of oral muscles on the different types of feeding and to compare their strength and activity. Principal aims of the present study was to assess the activity of the orbicularis oris muscle (OM) and of the masseter, temporalis and buccinator muscles (MM, TM and BM) (i.e. the muscles in charge of sucking during breastfeeding) during breastfeeding and bottle-feeding by means of SLI. The new Chicco feeding bottles Natural Feeling (Natural Fit) 0m+, 4m+ and 6m+ were used according to the age of the infants. Moreover, the following parameters were evaluated comparing breastfeeding and bottle-feeding: feeding efficiency (measured as ml/minute milk intake considering an interval of 15 minutes) and oxygen saturation during feeding (assessed by pulse oximetry). Moreover colic-like symptoms over 9 weeks (0 to 4 weeks infant only) were evaluated through the Infant Colic Scale.
In this study, the investigators will vary the proportions of high- and low-energy-dense foods served to preschool children at all meals and snacks during three 5-day periods. In the three experimental conditions, the same foods will be served; only the amounts and proportions of foods will be varied. In the Baseline condition, typical proportions of age-appropriate foods will be served. In the Addition condition, the portion sizes of low-energy-dense foods will be increased, and in the Substitution condition, the portions of low-energy-dense foods will be increased by replacing an equivalent amount of foods higher in energy density. The primary aim is to determine the effect on children's energy intake of varying the proportion of low- and high-energy-dense foods served, either by addition or substitution, over 5 days. It is hypothesized that children will consume less energy when they are served meals in which low-energy-dense foods are substituted for foods higher in energy density over 5 days and that children will consume more energy when served meals to which low-energy-dense foods are added. Additionally, we will test the hypothesis that daily energy intake in the three conditions will begin to converge across the 5-day period.
The Jiaxing Birth Cohort (JBC) is the largest prospective cohort study to explore prenatal risk factors, early life feeding practice and growth pattern/ adiposity in Chinese children.Between 1999 and 2013, 338 413 mother-child pairs were recruited in Jiaxing area in south-east China.Children of the recruited women were followed up at 1-2, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age, and subsequently followed up every 6 months to 36 months of age (toddler stage), and every year to 6-7 years of age before they went to school (pre-school stage). Follow-up rate was 70.8% at the toddler stage and 68.9% at the pre-school stage up to June 2013.
Using cross-sectional samples from over 40 Demographic and Health Surveys, the investigators studied the association between maternal employment and 3 indicators of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF): exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) among children less than 6 months old (N=39,791) and minimum diet diversity (MDD) and minimum meal frequency (MMF) (N=137,208) among children 6 to 23 months old. Mothers were categorized as formally employed, informally employed, or non-employed. The investigators first used adjusted logistic regression models to assess the associations within each country. The investigators then used meta-analysis to pool associations across all countries and by region.
