The Optimization and Evaluation of the Extremism and Intolerance Curriculum for the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Researcher from UNC Greensboro have partnered with Prevention Strategies and key stakeholders from the Kingdom of Bahrain to conduct a study using the innovative, engineering-inspired methodological approach, the Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST), to optimize and evaluate the Peaceful Coexistence and Anti-Extremism middle and high school curricula. No other curriculum targeting tolerance and/or extremism has been optimized using the state-of-the-art MOST methodology. The overall goal of the project is that the optimized versions of Peaceful Coexistence and Anti-Extremism curricula will be used across the Kingdom of Bahrain and translated for use in other countries to combat the spread of extremism and intolerance. Additionally, the D.A.R.E. keepin' it REAL (kiR) and D.A.R.E. myPlaybook high school programs will be evaluated as part of the Peaceful Coexistence and Anti-Extremism evaluation.

The Study on the Attitude and Empathy of Nursing Students Towards the Elderly

The effect of situational simulation teaching intervention on the attitude and empathy of nursing students towards the elderly can be divided into two stages. The first stage is a cross-sectional study on the aging knowledge, attitude and empathy of nursing students. The second stage was the change of nursing students' attitude and empathy towards the elderly after the intervention of situational simulation teaching. The intervention measures included communication theory and skills, aging trend and knowledge, teaching plans for elderly nursing, activities for the elderly and visual experience, application and debriefing of empathy. This study collected and analyzed the data of aging knowledge, attitude and empathy towards the elderly at the end of the term and one month later, in order to explore the changes of attitude and empathy towards the elderly of nursing students after the intervention of situational simulation teaching.

Investigating Differential Effects of Online Mental Training Interventions on Mental Well-being and Social Cohesion

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and the associated government-imposed isolationary lockdowns, has led to a mental health crisis on a global scale. Empirical studies have reported a drastic increase in mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, increased loneliness and feelings of disconnectedness from others, while resilience levels have been negatively affected, indicating an urgent need for intervention. The current study study is embedded in a larger study, the CovSocial study (www.covsocial) which focused in its first phase on evaluating the longitudinal changes in vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The present second phase of this CovSocial study will seek to investigate the efficacy of brief online mindfulness-based and socio-emotional interventions in reducing mental health problems, and enhancing psychological resilience, social competencies and social cohesion. After providing informed consent, participants will be assigned to one of three groups: 1) socio-emotional training group (with Affect Dyads as core exercise), 2) mindfulness-based mental training group (with attention-based mindfulness practices such as Breathing Meditation as core practice), or 3) Retest Control Group (waitlist control).All groups will first undergo a pre-intervention testing phase (pre-test) wherein they will provide a comprehensive baseline measurement which covers psychometric measures (such as questionnaires and behavioral tasks), and biological parameters (saliva samples). During the 10-week intervention period, participants will undergo weekly assessments and daily Ecological Momentary Assessment pre and post the daily exercise practice, using self-report scales and questionnaires delivered through a webapp or mobile app. At the end of the intervention, participants will again undergo an assessment of psychometric measures and biological parameters, same as at pre-intervention time (post-test). In a second portion, the waitlist control group will undergo the socio-emotional intervention and will be tested at post-test II again. Results will reveal the effectiveness of brief online interventions in enhancing mental health and social cohesion outcomes. In addition to examining pre-post intervention-related changes, we will also use the data from the phase 1 of the project to evaluate the impact of trait markers of and the longitudinal changes in vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion on the intervention-related changes in markers of vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion. We will also evaluate the predictive impact of genetic markers of vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion (assessed in phase 1) on intervention-related changes in our variables of interest. The present study will serve as a pilot for future application of scalable, low-cost interventions at a broader level to reduce stress, improve mental health and build resilience in the face of global stressors.

Exploring Empathy and Compassion Using Digital Narratives

Stories of suffering and struggle are shared continuously through digital formats such as internet videos, news stories, social marketing, and fundraising campaigns. Digital stories are often created and shared to generate awareness about a problem, impart knowledge on contemporary issues, or promote compassion. The practice of sharing critical life events and insights provided by these experiences are valuable for tellers and the listeners alike for catharsis, healing, reconciliation, and connectiveness. Portrayals of mental suffering are a matter of cultural and social interest as new media products become available to the public. Studies published since the 1990s overwhelmingly conclude that formal media depictions are biased, promoting the stereotype that people who suffer emotionally are mentally ill, dangerous, violent, or insane. Various agencies, organizations, and corporations are actively working to provide alternative stories/narratives to mainstream media by means of video testimonials in social marketing and fundraising campaigns and, ultimately, by taking advantage of the Internet. The impact of this work is under-researched. However, preliminary evaluations of social marketing campaigns report mixed results and raise questions about their effectiveness. As well, the first-person narrative prepared digitally and shared online is also providing alternative narratives to mainstream media stories. People are increasingly using digital videos to share their stories, viewing this as an opportunity to understand their emotions and thoughts, come to terms with disgrace around sensitive, personal issues and marginalization while providing hope and encouragement to others. This proposed study focuses on the process of creating digital narratives/stories, especially stories of mental and emotional suffering, and their impact in terms of inciting empathy, compassion, and good citizenship among viewers.

Online Training of Empathic Attunement to Affect

TThis research wants to observe the effectiveness of an Empathic attunement online training program for psychologists. This training is based on emotion-focused therapy. The present research has one main objective and two secondary objectives. The main objective of is to explore the impact of compassion training as a facilitator of empathic attunement training. For this reason, an experimental design will be conducted, randomly assigning therapists to two training programs on empathy, one of them accompanied by compassion training and the other accompanied by focusing training. Secondary objectives: - To validate in Spanish three empathy measures, the empathic understanding subscale from Barrett-Lennard´s relational inventory, Watson´s Observation of expressed empathy measure and the empathy subscale made from the Sussex-Oxford Compassion for Others Scale. - To explore patient variables related to empathy perception, especially the role of self-critic.

Evaluation of the Efficacy and Mechanisms of Change of Compassion Cultivation Training in Medical Students

The aim of this randomized, waitlist controlled trial is to examine the efficacy of the Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT©) in reducing psychological distress (i.e., stress, anxiety and depression) and burnout symptoms while improving psychological well-being medical students. The second goal of the study is to examine whether mindfulness and compassion-related variables as well as emotional-cognitive emotional regulation processes mediate the psychological distress and well-being changes. The effects of the CCT© program will be measured by means of self-report questionnaires involving different domains (mindfulness, compassion, distress, and well-being measures) at different time points (pre-intervention, inter-session assessment, post-intervention, 2-month and 6-month follow-up).

Educational Intervention for the Development of Professionals Skills in Family Medicine and Community Nursing Residents

BACKGROUND The burnout syndrome among health care workers frequently rises to prevalence above 50%. One of the consequences most supported by the literature is the impoverishment of the therapeutic alliance, triggered by a loss of empathy of the clinician towards the patient due to the emotional exhaustion he or she suffers. The main factors that influence the presence of this pathology are stressors related to the organization of work. However, this equation is also influenced by individual factors that can be acted upon and which are often the only tools available for professionals. Due to the widely supported relationship of empathy, burnout and therapeutic alliance, the investigators decided to carry out a complex training plan focused on personal development in teaching units of Family and Community Care in Spain. RESEARCH QUESTION Is effective an intervention aimed to promoting the development of personal skills throughout the training of family and community care doctors and nurses? METHOD Pre-post study, comparing two educational interventions, one face-to-face (N=90) and other online (N=70), with a control group (N=170). Participants: All physicians and nurse trainees on Primary Health Care in three Spanish Health Regions who wish to participate in the study. The face-to-face intervention consists of 3 annual workshops, while the online one will be carried out by adapting the theoretical contents of the face-to-face intervention for online use and will pursue the same objectives and be fed by the same contents. The variation in the level of empathy will be quantified by means of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) questionnaire, adjusted by burnout (Copenhagen questionnaire) and other variables such as resilience (Connor-Davidson), locus of control, social support (Oslo-3), sense of coherence (OLQ-13), age, sex, personality (Ten Item Personality Inventory, TIPI-SP) and other organisational factors. Aged Simulation Suit Among Physiotherapy Students

Turkey is the second fastest aging country in the world. According to the Turkey Statistical Institute's data, the distribution of the population aged 65 and over is expected to be 25.6% in 2080. Today, studies have been started to determine the empathy and attitudes of the young generation, especially the younger generation, towards older individuals and to develop them. In this context, it is thought that the simulation designed to simulate the aging process of human beings may have a positive effect on students' understanding of aging and perception of aging. In this study, the effect of aged simulation suit on empathy and attitudes towards elderly people will be determined in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation undergraduate students.
