Filter by:This project will evaluate the effectiveness of 38 videos of discharge instructions for patients seen in, and discharged from, the emergency department (ED). The investigators will (1) assess how many ED patients chose view the website, and (2) interview patients who viewed a video, as well as those who didn't view a video (and therefore received standard care), to determine whether patients who viewed a video understood their diagnoses and discharge instructions better.
The purpose of this study is to: 1) identify the palliative care needs of Emergency Department patients with advanced cancer, and determine if these needs can be rapidly assessed in the ED; 2) determine whether early palliative care consultation improves survival, quality of life and other burdensome symptoms and decreases utilization as compared to usual care.

The objective of this study is to compare readmission to the emergency department for asthma in asthma patients who receive treatment with fluticasone propionate and salmeterol oral inhaler after an initial emergency department visit using a retrospective observational cohort study design.
Renal colic is a common (1300 visits per year at our institution) and painful condition caused by stones in the kidney and ureter, and can be mimicked by life threatening conditions such as a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This can create clinical uncertainty. Emergency department targeted ultrasound (EDTU) is performed by an emergency physician at the patient's bedside, and has been shown to be accurate, safe, and efficient. We have shown that EDTU can accurately identify hydronephrosis, which is a predictor of complications of kidney stones. A normal formal ultrasound (US) predicts an uncomplicated clinical course. We will assess the accuracy of EDTU for the diagnosis of hydronephrosis, and when normal, whether patients can be safely discharged.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the immediate synergistic effect on the relief of severe acid-related dyspeptic pain by adding intravenous pantoprazole to the combination of oral antacid and antispasmodic agent (the conventional treatment).
The investigators will quantify the quality of chest compressions provided in the Emergency Department and determine whether the quality of chest compressions is related to patient outcome. The quality of chest compressions and patient outcomes will be assessed both before and after the introduction of audiovisual feedback in real time.
