Filter by:It has been described in obese individuals in which decreased basal metabolism as well as dopaminergic changes in the prefrontal cortex and striatum parallels the increased activation of reward brain regions in response to delicious food cues. Our aim is to explore different neurobehavioral dimensions of food choices and motivational processes in the light of this information, and to reveal whether these behaviors can be changed by operant conditioning with neuroimaging methods for phenotypes at risk.
Individuals suffering from depression and anxiety have an increased risk of obesity due to multiple factors such as side effects to psychotropic medications, associated appetite dysregulation, disruption of sleep, anergia leading to psychomotor retardation or inactivity, and increased stress hormones through the disruption in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Though not a causal relationship, an intimate bidirectional connection exists between the two conditions, which subsequently impacts the journey of weight loss. The impact mental health can have on weight loss is evident as concurrent depression and anxiety in individuals with obesity predicts poorer outcomes like decreased adherence and less success with weight loss interventions. Here, we will determine if delivery of psychoeducation regarding the primitive brain and model of safety in a group setting to those with obesity seeking weight loss intervention has an impact on not only psychiatric symptoms of depression and anxiety but also weight loss, eating behaviors, sleeping patterns, activity level, and health-related quality of life. This project will improve our understanding of the role of mental health and the stress response in obesity.
The purpose of this open-label, pilot study is to evaluate fMRI as a biomarker of opioid antagonism in adolescents with ED. Modulation of brain activation will be examined in regions of interest by fMRI using a food-specific and general reward task in adolescents with ED in a pre/post design.
Teenagers with eating disorders often experience a disruption in care upon turning 18. At this age, they are no longer eligible to receive pediatric treatment but are also not yet set up with the appropriate adult services. There are currently no supports in place to help youth with eating disorders and their families during this transition from child to adult care. In this project, the investigators will be implementing an intervention designed to improve this transition experience; it will include peer support, parent education, a meeting with the child and adult care providers, contact with the family doctor, and a written guide about the transition. Among 10 adolescent-parent pairs leaving McMaster Children's Hospital to adult programs in Hamilton, Ontario, the investigators will assess how feasible the intervention is to implement, how feasible the chosen measures are, participants' experience of the intervention, how many adolescents actually transition to adult care, as well as a few adolescent and parent outcomes, such as how prepared the teen feels or what the parents' needs are.
Both behavioral, psychological, and cognitive differences related to social cognitive function have been related to illness-state in eating disorders, but interventions that directly target these problems are limited. This pilot intervention explores whether a brief art-therapy team-building intervention coupled with psychoeducation about social behavior can change self-concept or clinical symptoms in patients with eating disorders. Participants will complete pre-treatment assessments related to social behaviors and clinical symptoms, attend four two-hour group sessions, and provide two follow-up post-treatment assessments at 1-4 weeks after the treatment and 3-5 months later. Comparisons between the pre-intervention data and the first follow-up will be the primary outcome measures. The primary hypotheses are that participants will show increases in self-esteem and positive self-attributions and decreases in eating disorder symptoms after the intervention. The secondary hypothesis is that other clinical symptoms (depression, anxiety) will be improved after the intervention. Feedback from participants about their experience with the study will assess perceived benefits as well as acquisition of the psychoeducation targets.
Obesity presents a substantial economic burden in Jordan. Binge eating disorder (BED) and food addiction (FA) are the most common eating disorders associated with obesity. BED and FA most therapeutic approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy. Dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5HT) the major neurotransmitter responsible for FA and BED. Daily calorie restriction (CR) and intermittent calorie restriction (ICR) are two forms of diet therapy that can help weight loss. Prolong fasting increases lipolysis and elevates ketones bodies' levels in the brain led to a significant increase in the DA and 5HT. No prior human research has examined the effect of ICR (model 8:16) on DA and 5HT levels and weight reduction on obese with BED and FA. Therefore, A Randomized, controlled trial of 6 weeks follow-up will be used. A sample of 100 obese women will be selected to be randomly assigned to daily CR or ICR, or control group without FA or BED for a period of 6 weeks. Participants will be undergoing nutrition assessment, Anthropometrics assessment, food Addiction assessment (YFAS), binge eating assessment (BEDS-7), and hormonal level (DA&5HT) at baseline and after 6 weeks. The investigators anticipated that CR and ICR (model8:16) will significantly induce DA&5HT level changes and that ICR (model8:16) will be significantly more effective than CR in reducing BED & FA.
This study aims to improve eating disorders symptomatology, mental, psychosocial and physical health, quality of life, strength and body composition of adolescents with eating disorders by the development of a dog-assisted therapy program. The current research will involve thirty-two patients distributed equally in a control and an experimental group. The intervention group will participate once a week in a dog-assisted therapy of seven weeks. Moreover, all the included patients will participate in an assessment session before and after the intervention to compare the effects of the dog-assisted therapy within and between groups in anxiety, depression, character, behavior, eating disorder evolution, health-related quality of life, treatment satisfaction, strength and body composition. Based on previous studies on different populations, it is expected that, compared to the control group, the experimental group may experience a potential reduction in anxiety, depression and symptoms, while improving quality of life, strength, body composition and behavior.
The referral center for eating disorders provides for a systematic many years follow-up of patients under care with an annual assessment at the center. The investigators have recently shown the frequency of relapse in the first 7 years after diagnosis, but the literature remains poor on this epidemiology and on the risk factors for relapse. The investigators would therefore like to extend this follow-up for an additional 3 years after remission with an annual telephone nursing interview for all cured patients.
The purpose of this study is to collect preliminary data on the feasibility and acceptability of the randomization of two relapse-prevention treatment conditions after discharge from intensive eating disorder (ED) treatment: an imaginal exposure therapy and a writing and thinking intervention. The second aim to test for (a) differences between the two treatments for the prevention of relapse and (b) preliminary change on clinical ED outcomes (e.g., ED symptoms, fears). The investigators further aim to examine the two treatments target fear extinction and if fear extinction is associated with ED outcomes. The investigators also plan to test if baseline differences in fear conditioning relate to change in ED outcomes across treatment.
This is a pilot study of children attending the Glasgow feeding clinic (GFC) which looks after a range of children with severe feeding problems who commonly have low appetite and extreme thinness. The investigators want to find out if these children are more likely to carry genetic markers of thinness.
