Filter by:This study is a large population-based analysis in the United Kingdom (UK) using routine primary care data to investigate the risk of mental health conditions in children, adolescents and young adults with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, compared to those without Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The study will also compare the impacts on quality-of-life outcomes and use of healthcare services between people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease with and without mental health conditions.
The scientific premise, developed from past work, is that treatment personalized based on idiographic models (termed Network Informed Personalized Treatment; NA-PT) will outperform the current gold-standard treatment (Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: CBT-E). The study goals are to (1) develop and test the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a randomization of NA-PT versus CBT-E and (2) to test if network-identified precision targets are the mechanism of change. These goals will ultimately lead to the very first personalized treatment for ED and can be extended to additional psychiatric illnesses. Specific aims are (1) To collect preliminary data on the feasibility and acceptability of the randomization of NA-PT (n=40) for EDs versus CBT-E (n=40), (2) To test the initial clinical efficacy of NA-PT versus CBT-E on clinical outcomes (e.g., ED symptoms, body mass index, quality of life) and (3) To examine if changes in NA-identified, precision targets, as well as in dynamic network structure, are associated with change in clinical outcomes.
This randomized, controlled effectiveness trial will assess outcomes, implementation, and mechanisms of two psychological treatments for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) delivered in the home setting, in the context of community-based mental health. Adolescents with AN-spectrum disorders (n=50) and their caregivers will be randomly assigned to either family-based treatment or integrated family therapy delivered in the home. Caregivers and adolescents will provide data on weight, eating, and putative treatment mechanisms, including caregiver self-efficacy, adolescent distress, and generalizability of treatment skills. Treatment feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness will be measured among providers and participating families. The proposed study has clear potential to advance scientific and clinical understanding of the real-world effectiveness of psychological treatments for AN, including whether adapting them for the home setting may improve accessibility and effects on treatment outcome
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada has experienced a surge in new pediatric eating disorder cases and hospitalizations and long treatment waitlists, with parents experiencing anxiety due to a lack of support. As it has not been rigorously studied, there is an urgent need to understand and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children, youth, and families living with eating disorders across Canada. The investigator's proposed research has two goals. First, the investigators plan to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic faced by this population throughout the country, as well as describe stakeholder views on virtual parent-led peer support groups. Given the increased burden faced by parents of children with eating disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic, the second goal is to study whether the national implementation of virtual parent-led peer support groups helps to mitigate the impact of the pandemic among affected parents. The investigators will use qualitative semi-structured interviews to gather an understanding of the impact of the pandemic on relevant stakeholders across the country. At the same time, the investigators will evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the implementation of virtual parent-led peer support groups in several regions of Canada by examining parent and parent peer support provider experiences.
The #KindGirlsInACTion project started in 2017 and developed and implemented a psychotherapeutic intervention program in Portuguese female adolescents. This program aimed to improve the overall quality of life and well-being of the participants, and specifically to promote a qualitative improvement in body image and interpersonal relationships, through the promotion of self-compassion, compassion and psychological flexibility. #KindGirlsInACTion is a school-based program, with 9 sessions over 9 weeks. It is essentially practical and interactive, with exercises created specifically for the program, as well as the regular practice of mindfulness.
There is currently no effective intervention for type 1 diabetes and eating disorders. The main objective of STEADY Stage 2 is to test the feasibility of the newly developed STEADY intervention. STEADY was co-designed by using Experience Based Co-Design methodology and other qualitative methods (focus groups, interviews). These findings informed the development of a T1DM cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) manual. The intervention will now be tested in a feasibility Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) in adults with type 1 diabetes and eating disorders and compared with usual clinical care. If STEADY is feasible, this may provide an effective intervention for this population. This study will take place at King's College London. Participants will remain in the study for 6 months, with a 12-month extended observation period. The study is expected to end in February 2023.
This trial aims at comparing three group treatments designed for eating disorders: a Cognitive-dissonance, a Mindfulness and a Person-centered based programs. Women with eating disorders will be recruited and randomized to one of the three programs. Participants will complete a pretest, a posttest, a 3-months follow-up and a 1-year follow-up. This trial aims to compare the programs to analyze the specific dimensions upon which each program acts. The investigators therefore made hypotheses according to the programs' theory: participants in the Cognitive-dissonance based program should experience a greater decrease in eating disorders symptoms, thin-ideal internalization and body dissatisfaction and a greater improvement in quality of life than other participants. Participants in the Mindfulness-based program should show a greater improvement in negative affect and in equanimity than other participants. Participants in the Person-Centered based program should report a greater increase in congruence than other participants.
Across the United States, thousands of children and adolescents suffer from eating disorders. Among young women alone, an estimated 2 to 4 percent are dealing with anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa also has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder and produces a six-fold increased risk for death. Unfortunately, study shows that current treatments are only successful with 25 percent of patients and no eating disorder prevention program has been found to reduce future onset of anorexia nervosa. The goal of this study is to conduct a highly innovative pilot study that will identify risk factors that predict future onset of anorexia nervosa and investigate how the risk processes for anorexia nervosa are different from the risk processes for bulimia nervosa. The proposed pilot study will: - Compare 30 healthy adolescent girls at high risk for anorexia nervosa to 30 healthy adolescent girls at high risk for bulimia nervosa, and 30 healthy adolescent girls at low risk for eating disorder in an effort to document risk processes that are present in early adolescence before anorexia nervosa typically emerges. - Test whether elevations in the hypothesized risk factors predict future onset of anorexia nervosa over a four-year follow-up.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of oral naltrexone tablets in pediatric and adolescent eating disorders, in particular anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, as compared to placebo. Study participants will be patients in a partial hospitalization program or intensive outpatient program for eating disorder.
The cognitive model of Eating Disorders (ED) highlights dysfunctional cognitive patterns common to the different subtypes. Body dissatisfaction, which can be defined as the negative and subjective evaluation of one's body shape, i.e., negative thoughts and emotions concerning one's body image and the origin of pathological behaviours with the aim of modifying one's weight and body shape, thus appears to be a central transdiagnostic concept in the ED. It is, moreover, described as a major factor in the development, maintenance and relapse of the various types of ED. It is suggested that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may be beneficial in treating body dissatisfaction insofar as body image inflexibility appears to influence the relationship between body image appraisal and coping strategies. ACT, which aims to develop psychological flexibility, appeared to us as a promising tool to manage body dissatisfaction in ED. The investigators therefore aim to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a psychological management group for body dissatisfaction (9 or 10 weekly group session), based on ACT therapy, in patients suffering from an ED.
