Many people struggle not only to lose weight through changes in diet and physical activity, but also to maintain weight loss once they have achieved it. In a previous study, our team designed and deployed a weight maintenance intervention that was delivered through the patient portal of an electronic health record (EHR) and found that patients who tracked their weight, diet, and physical activity and also received coaching had better success with maintaining recent intentional weight loss than patients who tracked but did not receive coaching. The investigators propose to repeat the intervention in a new health care system and train routine health care staff (e.g., medical assistants and nurses) to be coaches, a more sustainable model that will allow ongoing intervention delivery after the proposed study ends. This is a pragmatic randomized clinical Trial with percent weight change at 24 months as the primary outcome. This will be a 2-arm randomized trial that compares the MAINTAIN PRIME lifestyle coaching intervention to a control tracking intervention.
The mobilizing programme MobFood - mobilizing scientific knoweledge and technology to answer the current nutrition market challenges - is formed by a consortium of 47 collaborative entities, between the industry and ENESIIs (Entidades Não Empresariais do Sistema de Investigação e Inovação) and is financed by Structural European Funds of Investment. The project is currently investigating and undertaking collaborative scientific and technological strategies based on R&D and innovation, in order to boost and promote a more competitive national food industry, capable of overcoming the current challenges, including those of the Millennial Generation. This group is particularly conscious of the impact of food behaviour and food choices on health but extremely vulnerable to dietary imbalance. Strategies to improve Millenials' nutrition while providing conscious food products are needed. This study is a randomised, cross-over controlled trial designed to test the metabolic effect, particularly in terms of appetite control and glycaemic response of a breakfast kit (nutritionally balanced and innovative), recently developed as part of the collaborative project MobFood_PPS4.
The microbiota plays a vital role in the two-way communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system (CNS), articulated as the microbiota-intestine-brain axis. This function provides sufficient evidence to establish a causal relationship between numerous neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia. Besides, the microbiota modulation through the dietary pattern is related to the improvement of the physical and psychopathological health of patients. In this sense, the use of psychobiotics (prebiotics and probiotics with nutraceutical action) highlights. This research will be aimed to test the efficacy of prebiotic dietary modulation in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, attending to the impact in nutritional and cardio-metabolic conditions. In this sense, two-arms, double-blind, randomized in balanced blocks clinical trial of six months of intervention, will be developed in a group of 50 individuals (25 for the intervention group (IG) and 25 for the control group). First, an initial group session will be held to present the purpose of the research, as well as each of the relevant aspects during its development. Similarly, certain focus groups will be established periodically to redefine and guide the improvement of the development of the investigation, ensuring adequate compliance with the study after the implementation of the diet and nutrition education program. The dietary education will be designed and supervised by qualified personnel with recognized competencies for this type of intervention (nurses and dietitians). The CG will be made up of those participants who receive conventional dietary advice individually in serial consultations. On the other hand, in the IG, this intervention will be characterized by the establishment of an individual program of dietetic-nutritional education with high prebiotic and probiotic content. During the development of the study, data will be collected on the psychopathological state (PANSS and PSP scales), and blood test (hemogram, lipid profile, etc.). Measures will be taken at the beginning (basal), at three and six months. The estimation of intestinal microbiota and the usual nutritional pattern will also be assessed at the beginning and six months, using a stool test and a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), respectively. To evaluate the degree of adherence, participants in the IG will fill a specific weekly record of the main dishes/food consumed. At least, anthropometric parameters will also be analyzed monthly (BMI, blood pressure, heart rate, abdominal perimeter).
More than a dozen municipalities have passed healthy default kids' beverage policies. These policies seek to reduce child consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) by requiring that restaurants serve only healthy beverages (e.g., water, milk, or 100% juice) instead of SSBs as the default choice with children's meals in restaurants. These policies have potential to meaningfully reduce child SSB consumption. However, there are significant gaps in our knowledge of the effects of healthy default beverage policies on children's health. This study uses a natural experiment to evaluate the effects of a healthy default beverage policy in two U.S. cities, New York City and Philadelphia, on children's fast-food restaurant meal orders and dietary intake. The primary hypothesis is that the policy will reduce children's SSB purchases and consumption, reduce children's total caloric intake, and improve diet quality at the fast-food restaurant meal and on the day of the restaurant meal.
Background: Obesity is one of the most important health problems worldwide, several factors related to lifestyle as physical inactivity and unbalanced diets increase their development. This condition is characterized by low-chronic inflammation by excess of adipose tissue. The apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC) protein is part of NLRP3 inflammasome, a complex related to inflammation and metabolic alterations. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical exercise program on ASC gene expression and inflammatory markers in obese adults. Methods: 37 obese individuals were randomized to exercise-diet group or diet-group during a 4-month follow-up period. The dietary evaluation was analyzed by Nutritionist Pro software. Body composition was evaluated by bioimpedance (InBody 370). All biochemical determinations were analyzed by dry chemistry (Vitros 350). ASC messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression was performed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Taqman probes and by the 2-ΔΔcq quantification method. Cytokine levels was performed using the Bio-PlexPro™ HumanTh17Cytokine Assays (MagPix) panel. Statistical analysis was performed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v.22 software.
The Danish National Survey of Diet and Physical Activity (DANSDA) 2021-23 is a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey of dietary and physical activity habits of 4-80 year-old Danes, and is carried out at the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food). DANSDA provides high quality, nationally representative data on diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol and weight status in Denmark.
This South Initiative is the first step towards a long-term general objective that aims to improve the manage-ment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and concurrently create jobs for health professionals in Eastern Morocco by developing a multidisciplinary approach in the management of T2D, based upon international guidelines but adapted to the regional socio-economic and cultural context, and with a focus on empowerment of Muslim women. The intermediate results of this SI project proposal are: 1) Facilitators and perceived barriers in female patients with T2D towards change to a healthier lifestyle are known. 2) Characteristics of patients with T2D in the region of Oujda (prevalence, lifestyle, age, gender,…) are analysed. 3) Master and bachelor students have gained experience by participating to relevant research. 4) All involved stakeholders shared existing and newly ac-quired knowledge and expertise. 5) Facilitators and perceived barriers in health professionals of different disciplines to work together in the management of T2D are known.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) compose a substantial proportion of the global burden of diseases, posing a significant challenge in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries. In particular, certain lifestyle-related risk factors, such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and sleep deprivation are the leading risk factors, which place people at an increased risk of developing NCDs. On the other hand, a growing phenomenon of excessive concern about diet and health is emerging, and it is contributing to the development of a novel eating behavior disorder named orthorexia nervosa. According to recent studies, orthorexic behavior is very common among young adults and especially so in health-care professionals. The main objective of this multi-center study is to explore and compare lifestyle habits among undergraduate medical students and other healthcare-related professions from different countries (Croatia, Lebanon, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Turkey). The goal is to obtain information on the presence of unhealthy habits in order to be able to intervene, offering the information needed for primordial disease prevention in this young and still healthy group of respondents, who are the health educators and role models of the future. The particular importance of this goal is to raise awareness of the problem of the ubiquitously present unhealthy lifestyles. Unfortunately, health-care students are not the exception regarding the prevalence of the unhealthy diet, sedentary behavior, sleep deprivation and high levels of psychological stress. Furthermore, the adoption of unhealthy lifestyle patterns in health-care workers, such as doctors and nurses, will have far-reaching negative consequences, in both their health and their patients' health. The results of this study will be used for identifying the needs and targets for intervention, enabling students to become a pillar of health education for their patients and the population in general.
There is a need to develop evidence-based interventions that rural food pantries can use to limit the distribution and intake of ultra-processed foods and promote the distribution and intake of minimally processed foods in the food environment and among low-income populations to promote better dietary quality and health outcomes. This research project, The UnProcessed Pantry Project (UP3): A Novel Approach to Improving Dietary Quality for Low-Income Adults Served by Rural Food Pantries, uses the Social-Ecological Model to target multiple levels, including the food supply in the rural study location (community level), the food environment at the food pantry (environmental level), and participant dietary intake (individual level). Aim 1 will adapt evidence-based strategies to inform UP3. UP3 will improve dietary quality by influencing the food supply through organization-wide nutrition policies, modifying the food environment with minimally processed foods and nudges, and changing participant dietary intake through experiential nutrition education. The UP3 pilot study will be conducted during Aim 2 with 40 participants served by two rural food pantries in Montana. The purpose of the pilot study is to investigate potential short-term effects on nutrient intake and dietary quality (primary outcome), assess acceptability of UP3 among participants, and evaluate feasibility in rural food pantry environments. It is hypothesized that UP3 will improve access to minimally processed foods and decrease access to ultra-processed foods at the food pantry, which will improve overall dietary quality of individuals as measured by the Healthy Eating Index-2015 compared to baseline and to the control group. Demographic and food security data will characterize the population. Psychosocial factors will be collected to understand changes in knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about processed foods. Biomarkers of health data (i.e., weight, systolic blood pressure, HbA1c, fasting lipid panel) will be collected to determine the feasibility of measuring potential short-term health effects alongside UP3. A control group of 20 participants at a rural food pantry will be used to assess dietary intake, psychosocial factors, height, and weight. Aim 3 will tailor UP3 for a scalable intervention suited for an R01 grant application to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT). UP3 is positioned to demonstrate the positive effects of limiting processed foods and increasing unprocessed and minimally processed foods on diets and, potentially, health among low-income populations. The short-term goals of this research are to develop an adaptable and scalable intervention suitable for rural food pantries serving low-income populations, as well as potentially contribute to a knowledge base around potential short-term effects of the minimally processed foods diet on dietary quality and health risks in those populations. The longer-term goals are to test the efficacy of the intervention in an RCT and then disseminate the approach to be integrated into rural food pantries serving low-income populations with the goal of decreasing health risks.
