Filter by:The project aims to find mechanisms for the abnormal retinal blood flow that in diabetic patients often precedes any evidence of clinical retinopathy and may contribute to the development of retinopathy. Specifically, the projects tests the hypothesis that reduced retinal blood flow found in young patients with type 1 diabetes reflects increased resistance in the small vessels of the retina caused by the formation of small blood clots, called microthrombi; and that antiplatelet agents normalize the reduced retinal blood flow.

This study will evaluate the clinical efficacy of intra-vitreal injections of Ranibizumab (Lucentis) in the treatment of Diabetic Macular Edema as compared to grid/focal laser.
This study will test whether a new non-invasive technique can quickly and precisely measure retinal metabolism (the amount of energy retinal cells use). The retina is the part of the eye that sends information to the brain. Participants in current NEI studies who have age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, or von Hippel-Landau disease may be eligible for this study. Healthy volunteers will participate as controls. Patients with AMD must be 60 years of age or older; those with VHL disease or diabetic retinopathy must be 18 or older. Participants undergo the tests and procedures required in the NEI study in which they previously enrolled. In addition, for the current study, they undergo metabolic mapping. For this procedure, the subject's eyes are dilated, and different amounts of low-level light are shone into the eye to see how different cells respond with changes in metabolism. Measurements are taken while the subject breathes room air and while he or she breathes medical grade oxygen for about 1 minute. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes.

The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of two antihypertensive drugs on retinal vessel diameter in young type 1 diabetics. The retinal vessel analyzer (RVA) was used to investigate how the drugs affected vessel diameter, when the subjects were exposed to an increase in blood pressure, induced by isometric muscle contraction and when they were stimulated by flickering light.
This study will provide preliminary data on the dose and dose interval related effects of intravitreally administered Avastin on retinal thickness and visual acuity in subjects with Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) to aid in planning a phase 3 trial. In addition, this study will provide preliminary data on the safety of intravitreally administered Avastin in subjects with DME.
The purpose of this study is to determine if a drug called Macugen may help to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels on the iris that has occurred in the eye(s) as part of diabetic retinopathy.
