Diquafosol vs Hyaluronic Acid for Diabetic Dry Eye

Diquafosol ophthalmic solution (DQS) stimulates P2Y2 receptors on the ocular surface, which enhances mucin secretion from goblet cells. Therefore, tear film stability and hydration of the ocular surface can be achieved independent from lacrimal glands function. While it has been observed that 0.1 percent hyaluronate (HA) in artificial tears promotes corneal re-epithelium and improves corneal healing.This prospective, open label pilot study will include 60 eyes of 30 diabetic patients diagnosed with DED and will be randomly assigned to either DQS (n=30 eyes) or ATD group (n=30 eyes). Participants in the DQS group will receive 3% Diquafosol ophthalmic solution, while HA group will receive 0.1% Sodium hyaluronate artificial tears. The dosage for both drugs will be one drop, six times per day for 4 weeks. Tear film lipid layer (TFLL), non-invasive breakup time (NITBUT), corneoconjunctival staining score (CS), meibum gland (MG), conjunctival hyperemia (RS score), ocular surface disease index (OSDI) will be assessed and compared at baseline, day-14, and day-28.

Validation Study of RETINA-AI Galaxy™ v2.0, an Automated Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Device

Diabetes affects over 37 million Americans and over 530 million people globally. Each diabetic patient needs at least one retinal exam per year starting immediately at the time of diagnosis if they have Type II diabetes (and starting at 5th year after disease onset if they have Type I diabetes). However, majority of diabetic patients do not get their eye exam due to multiple prohibitive factors such as cost, transportation, difficulty of taking time off from work, and inconvenience, amongst others. As a result, diabetes is the most common cause of visual impairment and blindness in working age adults in the United States and globally. Early detection via effective screening can prevent diabetes-related blindness. However, there are multiple barriers to screening. This prompted the development of RETINA-AI Galaxy™ v2.0, an automated Software as a Medical Device that screens for diabetic retinopathy in the primary care setting. This observational study was designed to validate the safety and efficacy of the RETINA-AI Galaxy™ Software-as-a-Medical-Device.

Use of 3% Diquafosol Topical Ophthalmic Solution for Diabetic Dry Eye

Assessment of EyeCheckup as an Automated Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Tool

The duration of diabetes is directly related to eye complications. Diabetic retinopathy affects 80 percent of those who have had diabetes for 20 years or more. At least 90% of new cases can be reduced with proper treatment and monitoring of the eyes. The longer a person has diabetes, the more likely it is to develop diabetic retinopathy. Each year in the United States, diabetic retinopathy accounts for 12% of all new cases of blindness. It is also the leading cause of blindness in people between the ages of 20 and 64. The most important complication of diabetes leading to vision loss is diabetic retinopathy. Depending on this, macular edema, bleeding into the retina and vitreous,neovascular glaucoma can cause blindness. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision-loss globally. Of an estimated 285 million people with diabetes mellitus worldwide, approximately one third have signs of DR and of these, a further one third of DR is vision-threatening DR, including diabetic macular edema (DME). Diabetic retinopathy is a retinal disease that can often be stopped with early diagnosis, but if neglected, it can lead to severe vision loss, including permanent blindness. Diabetes has high morbidity and there are millions of people who should be screened for diabetic retinopathy (DR). Annual eye screening is recommended for all diabetic patients since vision loss can be prevented if DR is diagnosed in its early stages. Currently, the number of clinical personnel trained for DR screening is less than that needed to screen a growing diabetic population. Therefore, the automatic DR screening system will be able to screen more diabetic patients and diagnose them early. EyeCheckup is an automated retinal screening device designed automatically analyze color fundus photographs of diabetic patients to identify patients with referable or vision threatening DR. This study is designed to assess the safety and efficacy of EyeCheckup. The study is a single center study to determine the sensitivity and specificity of EyeCheckup to diabetic retinopathy. EyeCheckup is an automated software device that is designed to analyze ocular fundus digital color photographs taken in frontline primary care settings in order to quickly screen for diabetic retinopathy (DR).

The standard of care in diabetes requires at least an annual eye exam to detect onset of diabetic retinopathy and to treat when indicated. This is important as diabetes is the most common cause of visual impairment and blindness in working age adults in the United States. There are too few trained professionals to diagnose diabetic retinopathy, this prompted the development of RETINA-AI Galaxy an automated software as a medical device which screens for diabetic retinopathy in the primary care setting. This observational study is designed to validate the safety and efficacy of the device.

Assessment of EyeArt as an Automated Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Tool

More than 29 million people in the US are living with diabetes, many of whom will develop diabetic retinopathy (DR) or diabetic macular edema (DME) collectively known as diabetic eye disease (DED), the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in working-age adults. Annual eye screening is recommended for all diabetic patients since vision loss can be prevented with laser photocoagulation and anti-VEGF treatment if DR is diagnosed in its early stages. Currently, the number of clinical personnel trained for DR screening is orders of magnitude smaller than that needed to screen the large, growing diabetic population. Therefore, to meet this large unmet need for DR screening, a fully-automated computerized DR screening system is necessary. EyeArt is an automated screening device designed automatically analyze color fundus photographs of diabetic patients to identify patients with referable or vision threatening DED. This study is designed to assess the safety and efficacy of EyeArt.
