Filter by:Early use of robotic gait trainers have shown many benefits, however why these benefits occur and how to maximize them is unknown. There are a few options for how a robotic gait trainer can be used, however, there is not much understanding of how these options impact rehabilitation and compensate for impairments. The investigators aim to evaluate the impacts of as single session of Trexo robotic gait training and the impact of different modes of the Trexo robotic gait trainer. The investigators will evaluate how the different settings impact things like physical activity, walking, brain activity, spasticity, and fatigue. Investigators will arrange for a familiarity and fitting session to start, so that study team members can fit the participant to the Trexo and so that participants can become familiar with the feeling of using the Trexo robotic gait trainer. After the initial fitting sessions, follow up sessions will be completed to evaluate different settings on the Trexo, for example in "endurance" mode (where the robot completes the movements for the participant) and in "strength" mode (where the robot requires some assistance from the participant). Investigators may also test different fitting settings, for example with and without the supportive seat in the Trexo. Only three visits are required (one fitting/familiarity session and two testing sessions), however participants and/or their families may choose to complete more testing sessions if they want to assess other aspects of the training. For example, if the first two testing sessions assessed physical activity, participants and their families may choose to return for further sessions to assess brain activity. The aim of the study is to determine how robot assisted gait training impacts rehabilitation and compensates for impairments, as well as to provide suggestions on how the robotic gait trainer might be improved or modified. This study is exploratory to find out more about how these robotic gait trainers, specifically the Trexo, impacts various aspects of rehabilitation.
The purpose of the proposed study is to use transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to evaluate a neurobiological model of spoken word learning in older youth. Specifically, it is hypothesized that: (1) inhibition of the left dorsal stream will impact subsequent learning, processing, and retention of phonologically similar pseudowords; (2) the impact of dorsal stream inhibition on word learning will be associated with baseline levels of variability in neural activity, indicative of underlying differences in cortical excitability.
The goal of this flexible single-subject design vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) study is to examine the behavioral, cognitive, and biorhythmic effects of VNS in children and adults with autism and developmental disabilities. The main aims are: - Pilot the creation of a profile for those who will respond to VNS with the long-term goal of designing clinical trials. - Examine the effects of VNS on a broad range of symptoms. Participants will select between 1, 2, or 3 months of daily VNS treatment and complete study visits each month.
The COVID-19 emergency has led to the complete closure of all rehabilitation services, both public and/or private, across Italy, including the region of Tuscany. Among the various consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant negative indirect impact on children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families was observed. Specifically within Tuscany, a substantial decline occurred in rehabilitative interventions, including physiotherapy, language therapy, and neuropsychological therapy. Despite these challenges, some healthcare facilities responded by initiating tele-rehabilitation treatments, even if on a limited scale, following the recommendations of scientific societies within the field. In this framework, TABLET-TOSCANA project has been developed, with the overall aim of developing innovative organizational models to ensure the continuity of care for treatment and tele-rehabilitation of neuro-psychomotor and language functions in children with congenital and acquired developmental disabilities. The present proposal aims to evaluate the feasibility of this approach and the economic sustainability of employing the implemented technologies to promote tele-rehabilitation as possible territorial care taking. Additionally, the study aims to conduct a preliminary efficacy evaluation by analyzing pre-post treatment changes identified in outcome measures, providing valuable insights into the potential benefits of this tele-rehabilitation proposal.
One in 60 children have a physical disability that can impact activities and participation. Occupational and physical therapies can be of great benefit, but are costly and difficult to access. Working with children, parents and clinicians, the investigators developed a mixed reality video game, Bootle Blast, which children can play to develop motor skills. Using a 3D sensor, Bootle Blast tracks movements and manipulation of real-life objects. Since 2017, Bootle Blast has been used in clinics by Holland Bloorview, Canada's largest children's rehabilitation hospital. Home use of Bootle Blast has resulted in positive clinical outcomes for children with cerebral palsy. Bootle Blast is not yet commercially available and has yet to be trialed in "real-world" contexts. To understand real-world implementation, Bootle Blast will be trialed for 14 weeks in the homes of 60 young people (6 to 17 years) with any motor condition that could be addressed by the Bootle Blast system, regardless of their diagnosis. The investigators will assess feasibility (e.g. independent home setup, ability to set/meet self-directed play time goals), enablers/barriers to use, and perceived value. User experience will inform product, training and resource development. The research team combines expertise in engineering design, medicine, physiotherapy, qualitative methods, commercialization, knowledge translation, and includes young people with lived experience.
The goal of this observational study is to investigate the specificity of the growing up process in young people with disabled siblings. The functioning of adolescents with disabled siblings as a person growing up in three environments will be examined: family, peers and school. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Does having a disabled sibling influence the functioning of a healthy child in the family system? - Do siblings of disabled children show a higher level of maturity than their peers with properly developing siblings? - Does having a disabled sibling modify a child's functioning among peers? - Does having a disabled sibling modify healthy adolescent's educational experience? - Is there a greater risk of psychological disorders among siblings of disabled children than among siblings of normally developing children? The 160 participants' dyads will take part in the study: healthy adolescent having disabled sibling and one of his/her parents. The parents' participation is necessary to assess the presence of possible internalizing and externalizing disorders among adolescents taking part in the study. The healthy adolescent will be filling out questionnaires regarding the remaining studied variables: functioning in the family - siblings relations, parental attitudes; at school - school achievement, extracurricular activities; relations with peers - time spending with peers, number of friends, as well as the growing up process trajectory - parentification and the way of going through an adolescent crisis. Researchers will compare four groups (40 dyads in each group): three groups of adolescents having disabled sibling 1) intellectual disability, 2) motor disability, 3) chronic somatic disease, and 4) control group - healthy adolescent having sibling without any disability, to see if they differ from each other referring to the studied variables.
The purpose of this study is to identify improvement in behavioral and social function and changes in the brain following Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) for Adolescents in highly verbal adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
This study will determine the comparative effectiveness of Go Act, a tailored advocacy curriculum versus Peer parent-directed peer learning for increasing parent activation for parents of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Second, it will determine the comparative effectiveness of the two study arms for improving parent and youth health outcomes while assessing whether parent activation serves as a mechanism that mediates their effects on health outcomes.
The purpose of this study is to work with a community engagement group to develop and pilot a protocol for a virtual reality exergaming program for children with special needs at a high school.
Background: Parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) have a tendency to provide insufficient caregiving and often need parenting support to prevent neglect and child removal. However, parents with IDDs are not provided with appropriate support, and there is a lack of evidence-based programmes tailored to these parents' needs. Parenting Young Children (PYC) is a home-based parenting programme developed for parents with IDDs. PYC has shown promising clinical results in interview-based studies, but there is no evidence of its effectiveness. The purpose of the proposed study is to evaluate the PYC programme for improving parenting in parents with IDDs where there is risk of child neglect. The study will include a quantitative evaluation, a process evaluation, and a qualitative evaluation of the children's and parents' perspectives on participating in PYC. Methods: The quantitative evaluation will have a multi-centre, non-randomised, comparative study design. Eligible for participation are parents with IDDs who have children aged 0-9 years living at home and who are assessed as needing tailored parenting support. Thirty parents receiving PYC and thirty parents receiving treatment as usual (TAU) will be recruited from Swedish municipal social services. Outcome variables will be examined before and after the intervention, with a follow-up 6 months after completing the intervention. The primary outcome will be goal-attainment in parenting skills, and secondary outcomes will be parental self-efficacy and children's wellbeing. Interview methods will be used to explore the perspectives of parents and children in the PYC group. Discussion: This study is motivated by the need for evidence-based support for parents with IDDs, and it focuses on upholding the centrality of child-caregiver relationships and family preservation, as well as children's rights and the rights of people with disabilities. Social services have expressed ethical concerns with employing a randomized design for this vulnerable group, and this study will therefore evaluate PYC in a non-randomized comparative study.
