Filter by:Patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis will be asked to participate in helping the study team determine how well the medication works for atopic dermatitis. Participants will not be told that adherence will be monitored. Patients will be dispensed topical crisaborole 2% ointment (Eucrisa®) in a medication tube fitted with a Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS) cap if they agree to participate. This cap records dates and times the bottle is opened and this data can be downloaded and tabulated with the associated software. Investigators and subjects will be blinded to the adherence data until the final treatment (12 month) session. The study subjects will be randomized to two groups. After baseline visit, both groups will come for a follow-up visit at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. The intervention group will also be asked to complete an online treatment response survey designed to improve adherence at weekly intervals for 6 weeks, then monthly thereafter. The study will consist of a 12-month Treatment Phase. Study subjects will be instructed to apply the medication twice daily (morning and evening) to all of their AD lesions. They will be instructed to apply the smallest amount of study medication possible that is sufficient to cover all lesions. These instructions are standard-of-care for patients with AD. Subjects will be asked to bring their medication tubes with them at each visit. At each visit, the study coordinator will weigh the medication tube and download the MEMS cap data. Disclosure of the adherence monitoring will occur at the 12 month visit (or end of treatment), at which time the results of the subject's adherence behavior will be used to supply individualized treatment options for each subject (feedback session). At each visit, drug tubes will be measured for weight to determine the amount of study medication used. This data will be correlated with the extent of BSA involved and the response of the disease. The MEMS caps will be downloaded at each visit.
Eczema is a chronic disease of the skin that is becoming more common worldwide for reasons unknown. Currently the best indicator that a baby will suffer from eczema is if either or both parents have the condition, although this is not always the case. The goal of this study is to find out if, from birth, the skin of babies who later go on to suffer from eczema develops differently to those who do not. By doing this the research team hope to detect early signs of the disease within the first year of life. Our researchers will ask 150 families from the local Sheffield community to take part in a 1-year study. To monitor baby skin development, the investigators will carry out 3 simple procedures at the skin surface that pose no risk to the baby. These procedures will be performed on the arm and thigh, at birth, 4 weeks, and 12 months of age. In addition the investigators will ask parents to answer questionnaires and fill out diaries at specific time points throughout the year, to collect information on how they care for their baby's skin. By recording which babies go on to, and do not, develop eczema the investigators hope to: (1) better understand baby skin development from birth, (2) identify if these simple procedures can predict the development of eczema during the first 12 months of life, and (3) investigate environmental effects that may cause disease onset. In a medical era where the prevention of eczema is the long-term goal, it is hoped that this study will provide a new way to identify babies that may go on to develop eczema. This will allow healthcare professionals to offer specific skin care advice from birth, and empower parents to take measured action to help prevent the emergence of eczema in their baby.
Atopic dermatitis is a skin disorder with an itchy, red skin rash. This may be because certain proteins are increased in the skin of AD patients. The increased expression of these proteins play an important role in the development of AD and may increase the risk for persons with AD to get skin infections and allergies. There are very few non-invasive ways to diagnose and monitor the development and progression of atopic dermatitis. The goal of this study is to develop laboratory tests, done on skin samples collected by tapy stripping, that can be used for early detection and monitoring the response to treatment for a variety of skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis.

The primary objective is of the PreventADALL study is to test if primary prevention of allergic diseases is possible by simple and low cost strategies, and secondary to asses the impact of xenobiotic exposure and microbiota in and on the body and the environment on allergic disease development. The secondary objective is an exploratory focus to investigate early life risk factors for development of non-communicable diseases, including asthma and allergic diseases as well as for diseases that may share common risk factors, including cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Design: A multi-national population-based prospective birth cohort with a factorial designed randomized controlled intervention trial of two clinical interventions; skin care 0-9 months and early food introduction by 3-4 months, thereafter observation only. Recruitment in three cities (Oslo, Ostfold and Stockholm) of approximately 2500 mother-child pairs is done in two steps; first pregnant women are recruited and enrolled at the 18-weeks ultrasound investigation (n=approximately 2700) and thereafter their new-born babies are included. Randomization into four groups is done by the postal code or "township" to ensure all four intervention-groups within each "township". Visits for biological and environmental sampling, observations and investigations will be at the relevant pediatric departments (at 3-6-12-24-36 months of age) and through childhood into adulthood thereafter, provided sufficient funding.
