Filter by:The goal of this study is to learn if a patient decision tool for HPV vaccination works for decision-making among adults ages 27-45. Researchers will compare a web-based patient decision tool to an information sheet to see if the tool works for decision-making. Participants will take a baseline survey, view the intervention or control condition, and then take a follow-up survey.
This study will sample older Black adults to test their knowledge and opinions of hospice.
Upper abdominal pain (UAP) is a common symptom and frequently the reason to visit the hospital. The prevalence of epigastric pain in the Dutch population is estimated to be as high as 37%. Moreover, Dutch hospitals yearly record >100.000 diagnoses related to UAP. In most patients, UAP can be attributed to symptomatic (functional) dyspepsia (FD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or uncomplicated gallstone disease (cholecystolithiasis), with a prevalence in the general population of 20-30%, 20%, and 6-9%, respectively. However, these conditions may have overlapping symptom patterns and generally affect similar populations. which contributes to ineffective (diagnostic) interventions. Patients are generally not aware of the similarity of symptoms and the poor outcome of some treatments. Education positively influences patients' self-management and health judgment. In a recent open-label, multicentre trial the effectiveness of web-based patients' education is applied to reduce overuse of upper gastrointestinal endoscopies in patients with dyspepsia. This study illustrated that an web-based education tool safely reduced 40% in upper gastrointestinal endoscopies. Lifestyle interventions (such as change of diet and/or physical activity) are widely incorporated in treatment programs for cardio-vascular diseases including diabetes mellitus and obesity. An web-based education tool on upper abdominal pain and other complaints combined with a lifestyle interventions for patients may be an effective treatment option for this large group of patients. This study investigates the potential of an individualized web-based education tool as intervention for patients with functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and uncomplicated symptomatic cholecystolithiasis with the possibility to visit the Prevention and Lifestyle clinic (RELIEF pathway). The RELIEF pathway aims to reduce unnecessary health care utilization and, secondly, to maintain and improve quality of life by educating patients on lifestyle improvement.
This research project aims at assessing the effectiveness of a decision aid (DA) scaling intervention within the context of prenatal screening for trisomy 21, 18 and 13. The primary outcome is the level of involvement of pregnant women, their partners, and health professionals in shared decision-making (SDM) in the context of prenatal screening for trisomy 21, 18 and 13. The secondary outcome is the rate of use of online and paper versions of the DA by pregnant women, their partners and health professionals. The investigator hypothesize that the DA scaling strategies will increase the level of involvement of pregnant women, their partners (where appropriate), and health professionals in SDM.
Different renal replacement therapy methods will cause significant impacts on the physical, mental, and social for patients with end-stage renal disease. Application shared decision-making should be able to effectively assist patients in choosing suitable renal replacement therapy. Currently, most of the patient decision aid of renal replacement therapy are written health education leaflets, which have problems such as too many words, more difficult content, and inconvenience. In shared decision-making, even though different treatment options are communicated to patients, there is still a gap between "understanding" and "real experience", it will be creating uncertainty of decision, and emphasizing true situational learning strategies should be a viable auxiliary method. Therefore, this study aims to develop a web-based patient decision aid of renal replacement therapy and integrates situational learning strategies into it. First, investigators have conducted a qualitative study to explore the related experience of patients with end-stage renal disease the decision-making needs in renal replacement therapy choice, and the experience and barrier of reading paper patient decision aid. Next, based on the results of the pilot study, the modified Delphi method will be used to collect the opinions of experts, and the situational learning theory will be integrated into the patient decision aid to develop the web-based situation renal replacement therapies patient decision aid. After completion, investigators will apply quasi-experimental, a repeated measurement that will be adopted to analyze the effectiveness of web-based patient decision aid of renal replacement therapy in shared decision-making in patients with end-stage renal disease.
Introduction: There are two options for women seeking early pregnancy termination in Canada; either surgical or medication abortion. When making a decision about which option is best for them, patient must consider their values as well as social resources and circumstances Patient decision aids (PtDAs) are tools to help patients make health-related decisions, particularly when no 'best' choice exist. Our research team has developed an online interactive patient decision aid on method of abortion based on international standards for decision aid development. We would like to investigate whether it leads to improved decisional quality in patients seeking early abortion. Methods: Phase 1 will be development of an abortion knowledge assessment tool. We will start by developing ten multiple choice questions based on information that is classically included in abortion education material. The goal is to ultimately include 5-7 well-performing questions in the trial. The ten questions will be sent to content experts to answer and rate. They will rate the questions on representativeness and importance. The questions will also be administered to community members without specific abortion knowledge. Results will be used to assess content validity and discriminator validity and revise the questionnaire. Phase 2 will be a randomized trial of people seeking abortion at less than 63 days gestation. Those who wish to participate will be randomized either the decision aid (study group) or the standard abortion clinic website (control). They will then be asked to participate in a survey immediately after they are finished reviewing the decision aid or website to. This survey will include questions about their decision, demographics, medical history, and their level of knowledge about abortion methods (by administering the knowledge assessment tool described above). The evaluation of the decision making will be measured using the Decisional Conflict Score. Four weeks post procedure, participants will be contacted by e-mail again and asked to complete a second survey identifying which type of abortion they underwent along with an inventory of perceived adverse treatment effects, as well as completing a Satisfaction with Decision Scale (SWD)
This is a randomized pilot study to test the feasibility and acceptability of a patient decision aid on conservative care among older patients with advanced CKD and their close persons.
The purpose of this study is to test the effect of the "Best Case/Worse Case" (BC/WC) communication tool on receipt of palliative care and intensity of treatment at the end of life, quality of life, and quality of communication for older patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving outpatient care at ten nephrology clinics. The intervention was developed and tested with acute care surgical patients at the University of Wisconsin (UW) and is now being testing to see if the intervention will work in a different setting. The intervention will be tested with 320 older adults who have end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and are receiving care from a nephrologist enrolled in the study. Randomly assigned nephrologists within each site will receive the intervention (training to use the BC/WC tool) or to be in the waitlist control, meaning that they will not be offered BC/WC training until the end of the study, when all participants have been enrolled. Participants will be on follow up with surveys and chart review for up to two years after study enrollment. Caregivers will also be invited to participate and complete surveys.
