Evaluating the Effects of Information Leaflets in Adult Aural Rehabilitation

Knowledge about how to manage hearing aids is an important factor in hearing aid success, but studies show that this knowledge ranges from good to poor, even among experienced adult hearing aid users. Information leaflets is a common tool in healthcare to give information with the purpose to increase theoretical knowledge and change behaviour, and illustrations in these leaflets can provide additional understanding for all kinds of patients. The primary aim of this aural rehabiliation study was to evaluate participants' knowledge about placement in a noisy environment, directional microphone and telecoil function at baseline and postintervention and assessing their perceptions of the benefits of an information leaflet. Additional aim was to investigate whether, an information leaflet with illustrations and accompanying text about hearing aid functions have additional effects on participants' knowledge compared to an information leaflet without illustrations.

Evaluation of a Home-based Parenting Support Program: Parenting Young Children

Background: Parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) have a tendency to provide insufficient caregiving and often need parenting support to prevent neglect and child removal. However, parents with IDDs are not provided with appropriate support, and there is a lack of evidence-based programmes tailored to these parents' needs. Parenting Young Children (PYC) is a home-based parenting programme developed for parents with IDDs. PYC has shown promising clinical results in interview-based studies, but there is no evidence of its effectiveness. The purpose of the proposed study is to evaluate the PYC programme for improving parenting in parents with IDDs where there is risk of child neglect. The study will include a quantitative evaluation, a process evaluation, and a qualitative evaluation of the children's and parents' perspectives on participating in PYC. Methods: The quantitative evaluation will have a multi-centre, non-randomised, comparative study design. Eligible for participation are parents with IDDs who have children aged 0-9 years living at home and who are assessed as needing tailored parenting support. Thirty parents receiving PYC and thirty parents receiving treatment as usual (TAU) will be recruited from Swedish municipal social services. Outcome variables will be examined before and after the intervention, with a follow-up 6 months after completing the intervention. The primary outcome will be goal-attainment in parenting skills, and secondary outcomes will be parental self-efficacy and children's wellbeing. Interview methods will be used to explore the perspectives of parents and children in the PYC group. Discussion: This study is motivated by the need for evidence-based support for parents with IDDs, and it focuses on upholding the centrality of child-caregiver relationships and family preservation, as well as children's rights and the rights of people with disabilities. Social services have expressed ethical concerns with employing a randomized design for this vulnerable group, and this study will therefore evaluate PYC in a non-randomized comparative study.

Addressing Nonsuicidal Self-injury in Schools

The aim of this study is to study the effectiveness of a whole-school approach that addresses non-suicidal self-injury and targets adolescents, parents and teachers. Whether training and interventions can influence NSSI will be examined. Furthermore, investigations will be conducted to examine whether this whole-school approach can reduce symptoms of mental health problems in adolescents, reduce stigma och increase help-seeking and perception of social support. Using a clustered waitlist control design, six lower secondary schools were randomized to either intervention or waitlist during four months (control groups were then given the intervention). Measures of NSSI, suicidality, mental well-being, stigma, attitudes, help-seeking and perceived social support were administered at baseline, after the intervention and at 6, 12 and 18-months follow-up. Two hundred and sixty-seven adolescents in seventh and eight grade participated in the study (135 active group and 132 control group). The interventions were delivered during four months. For adolescents, interventions were delivered in the class room and consisted of five sessions of the Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) program and one additional session focusing specifically on knowledge, stigma and attitudes toward NSSI (KRAS). Parents were offered an online psychoeducation on NSSI, as were all school staff during this time period. School health care personnel, nurses, psychologist and counsellors and other school staff, such as teachers' aids, support staff and mentors took part in a 2-day workshop on NSSI and suicidality.

Intensive Treatment Versus Standard Weekly Prolonged Exposure for Adults With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

The goal of this clinical trial is to compare a novel, massed treatment format of prolonged exposure to gold standard trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (weekly delivered prolonged exposure) for post-traumatic stress disorder. The objective with this study is to investigate efficacy, mechanisms of change and cost effectiveness of intensive prolonged exposure (I-PE) in regular Swedish psychiatric care. Adult patients with post-traumatic stress disorder will be randomly assigned to receive either gold standard prolonged exposure weekly for 15 weeks or 5 days of intensive treatment with the addition of three booster sessions dispersed 1, 2 and 4 weeks after completion of the massed treatment period.

Alternating and Direct Current Stimulation for Neuropathic Eye Pain

The goal of this clinical intervention is to test if two forms of transcranial current stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) or transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can alleviate neuropathic eye pain in a sample of 20 patients. The main aims are: - Test if tDCS/tACS can alleviate neuropathic eye pain and/or other cerebral symptoms: brain fatigue, migraine, light sensitivity, etc. - Test if one stimulation method is superior to the other Patients will be treated for a total of fifteen 30-minute stimulation sessions, three times a day over a five-day period, each stimulation separated by approximately 4 hours, with either active tACS or tDCS over the scalp corresponding to primary sensory and motor areas. The patients will have questionnaires to monitor subjective experiences and pupillometry before and after treatment to monitor experimental outcomes.
