Snus and Home Blood Pressure

Snus is a type of snuff that is administered sublabially, that has not been studied regarding the effects on home blood pressure and metabolism on a longer time frame. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of snus on home BP within weeks to months in former snus users who continue to not use snus or relapse in daily snus use, respectively. The secondary aim is to evaluate the effects on metabolic measurements. The hypothesis is that BP will increase amongst the participants that resume snus intake. 28 healthy volunteers with a pre-existing daily use of snus will be recruited and followed during snus cessation. Home blood pressure, lipid and metabolic markers will be measured before and after snus cessation, as well as after snus relapse if such a relapse occurs.

Licorice and Home Blood Pressure, Additional Study

Licorice is known to raise blood pressure, but no previous studies have measured the effects on home blood pressure. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between licorice intake and home blood pressure.

Transfusion of Whole Blood in Acute Bleeding

Blood collected from blood donors is routinely divided into its different components, red blood cells, plasma and platelets. These components are stored under different storage conditions and their maximum storage time before transfusion is different. Platelets are stored at a maximum of 7 days and at a temperature of 22°C to best preserve their function. Research has been conduction on blood stored and transfused as whole blood (without separation into the various components), particularly in situations of acute trauma. Region Örebro län will therefore start transfusion of whole blood in such situations. The whole blood units will be stored at 4°C for a maximum of 14 days. This means that the platelets will be stored at a lower temperature than standard and for a longer time period. The research on how this will affect platelet function is limited. This project aims to determine how the patients are affected regarding coagulation, hemolysis, renal function, immunisation, transfusion reactions and the effect of substances released from the blood cells in the whole blood units during the storage period and if there is an impact on mortality.

Psychological Therapy for Gaming Disorder

Gaming is a common leisure activity, both for children and adult, and while it is generally a positive experience for most, it can lead to problems for some individuals. There is currently a lack of knowledge of when video gaming becomes a problem and why, and there is a lack of evidence-based interventions for treating Gaming disorder. This pilot study aims to evaluate a new treatment manual for Gaming Disorder, which consists of modules based on cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy. The therapy can be provided as individual therapy to the patient, to relatives, or as family therapy involving both the patient and their relatives. This study is an effectiveness trials and will follow all-patients at the clinic who will be offered the treatment. The hypothesis is that the manual-based psychotherapy for Gaming Disorder will result in a reduction of Gaming Disorder symptoms and psychological distress, as well as an improvement in daily functioning.

A Medication Plan for Safer Medication Treatment in Older Persons

Harm from medications is still a concern in an aged population. As medication treatment for older persons many times are complex, a feasibility study can be helpful to support decisions about future evaluation and implementation of an intervention. In this study, the overall aim is to assess feasibility, acceptability and potential effects of usage of a co-designed medication plan for older persons with medication treatment. The study will take place in the primary care setting in Sweden, and involve persons 75 years or older using five or more medications on daily basis, physicians at primary care centers and persons supporting the older person in their medication use a home. During an appointment, the physician and older person will agree on a medication plan, that will be documented in the older person's electronic health record and printed out on paper. After three month, the potential outcomes of a medication plan will be collected, together with data about feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. Two questionnaires will be used, addressing usability and patient safety. Moreover, remote interviews with participants will be performed to address usability and patient safety. Information about the medication plan will be collected from the electronic health record. Data analysis will be done with descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. Expected outcomes are an assessment of feasibility and acceptability, and potential outcomes, to support decision on a future evaluation of the medication plan.

A Phase 1 Study to Evaluate EMP22 PD and EMP16 PK Versus Xenical® in Healthy Volunteers

This Phase I, active-controlled, randomised trial will be conducted in 2 parts. Part I aims to confirm the PD equivalence of EMP22 and Xenical® based on percent fecal fat excretion at steady state. EMP22 (also referred to as MR orlistat) has the same MR properties as EMP16 but lacks the acarbose component. Part II will explore the PK properties of EMP16 alone and vs. Xenical®. Part I will be conducted in a single-blind, cross-over fashion while Part II will have an open-label, fixed-sequence design. Healthy volunteers will be recruited to the trial.
