The prospective EUTrigTreat multi-center study is an observational, advanced diagnostics and genetic risk stratification trial in patients with standard indications for ICD treatment, with and without myocardial infarction in their history. Its aims are fourfold: 1) To accurately risk stratify a large cohort of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) patients for ICD shock risk and mortality using traditional risk markers as well as genetic markers 2) To find a link between repolarization biomarkers and genetic markers of calcium metabolism. 3) To compare invasive and noninvasive electrophysiologic (EP) testing systematically 4) To assess temporal changes of typical noninvasive risk stratifiers and their prognostic implication. In five European academic clinical centers, 700 ICD patients are prospectively enrolled (optionally the number of enrolled patients may be expanded to 1000 patients). Comprehensive non-invasive risk stratifying ECG diagnostics including beat-to-beat variability of repolarization (BVR) are applied, and candidate genes associated with malignant arrhythmias are analyzed. Programmed electrical stimulation is performed to test for inducibility of malignant ventricular arrhythmias and BVR. In a subset of patients, electrophysiologic studies include recording of monophasic action potentials (MAP) from the right ventricle for assessment of restitution properties. Non-invasive risk stratifying ECG methods are repeated annually. Outcome (mortality, ICD shocks) will be assessed until September 2014.

Evaluating the Safety and Effectiveness of Mozobil Mobilization in Adults With Beta-Thalassemia Major

Thalassemia is considered the most common genetic disorder worldwide, occurring with high frequency in Mediterranean areas, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Currently, the only cure for thalassemia is bone marrow transplantation from a related, compatible donor. Gene transfer, achieved by transplantation of the patient's own blood stem cells that have been genetically-modified with the corrected gene, could potentially cure thalassemia. The first step in developing gene transfer for treatment of thalassemia is to develop a safe and effective method to obtain blood stem cells from thalassemia patients. Eventually, high numbers of genetically modified cells will need to be infused into the patient for clinical gene transfer to be effective. The blood stem cells are obtained by giving a "mobilization" agent to the patients. This causes the stem cells to leave the bone marrow and go into the blood. The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of the new mobilization agent, Mozobil, in causing mobilization of blood stem cells for patients with beta-thalassemia major.

The purpose of this study is to determine if treatment with paclitaxel plus AMG 386 is superior to paclitaxel plus placebo in women with recurrent partially platinum sensitive or resistant epithelial ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal cancer or fallopian tube cancer. AMG 386 is a man-made medication that is designed to stop the development of blood vessels in cancer tissues. Cancer tissues rely on the development of new blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis, to obtain a supply of oxygen and nutrients to grow.

The European Surgical Outcomes Study (EuSOS) is a multi-centre, international cohort study of peri-operative care and clinical outcomes for patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Participating centres throughout Europe will contribute routine clinical data describing all eligible patients who undergo surgery from 4th April 2011 to 11th April 2011. Patients will then be followed until hospital discharge (or for a maximum of 60 days) for duration of hospital stay and hospital mortality. Routine clinical data will also be collected for those patients admitted to critical care at any stage after surgery but during the same hospital admission. Specific objectives are to describe clinical outcomes and standards of peri-operative care for patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery in Europe.
