Validating the Use of Frailty Measurements to Predict Care & Quality of Life

The aim of this research program is to validate frailty measurements as a risk stratification tool to predict deteriorations in patient-reported outcomes, to gain a better understanding of patient preferences for care within varying degrees of frailty, and to assess differences in frailty measurement between patients and their clinicians. This work will provide a foundation in the development of customized interventions for people with COPD and varying degrees of frailty, with the goal of improving quality of life and optimizing health system service delivery for patients and their care givers.

The Effect of Face Hand Fan Application on Dyspnea

Diagnosing and managing dyspnea in patients with COPD is very important. Although pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods are used in the management of dyspnea, it is recommended that pharmacological methods be supported by non-pharmacological methods. Hand fan application, which is one of the non-pharmacological methods used in dyspnea management, provides an increase in self-efficacy in patients in addition to the stimulation of cold air flow to the trigeminal nerve branches, mucosa and skin. Although there are studies reporting that applying cold air to the face with a hand fan is effective in reducing the severity of dyspnea in different patient groups, the number of studies examining the effectiveness of applying cold air to the face with a hand fan in patients with COPD is quite limited. This project was planned to determine the effect of applying cold air to the face with a fan on the severity of dyspnea and quality of life in COPD patients.

Efficacy and Safety of Broncho Muco Cleaner Balloon Dilation Therapy

In COPD patients with chronic bronchitis, it is aimed to determine whether the broncho muco cleaner balloon dilation method can provide clinical and functional benefit by causing destruction in hyperplasic goblet cells in the bronchial system. Although 2 studies have been published on this subject before, one of them is a retrospective design and the other is a pilot study consisting of only 10 patients . Therefore, it is clear that it should be supported by a controlled prospective study with more patients. Within the scope of the research, broncho muco cleaner balloon dilatation treatment will be performed with fiberoptic bronchoscope under general anesthesia in chronic bronchitis-predominant COPD cases, and the effectiveness and reliability of the procedure will be evaluated.
