Filter by:The new professional profiles highlight the need to incorporate competences such as self-regulation, communication or growth mindset in the academia. Not only is this important for employability; we need to take a step further and equip learners with knowledge, skills and attitudes that help them become agents of change and shape sustainable futures in our current complex society. Within the framework of an agreement signed between the University of Granada (UGR), Spain, and, one of the leading real state firms in Spain, Cívitas, a course and a parallel study have been launched that will provide research and training in these competences at a degree level. It is part of the Sustainable Human Development Training Pathway of the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Inclusion and Sustainability, and 3 ECTS will be accredited for the completion of any of the UGR official degrees. The main objective of the study is to test whether participating in a competence-based course can improve students' cognitive, emotional and personal traits as well as academic performance. Together with this main purpose, the present study also aims to compare the effects of two competence-based programs on the students' ability to improve specific aspects of cognition, emotional intelligence, creativity or academic performance among others. Both programs involve training sustained attention and an accepting and open attitude though they differ in several aspects of their methods, intention and aims. Drawing conclusions from the research and outcomes, pedagogies which are best suited to develop theses competences at the Higher Education level will be suggested. Assessment and certification of this kind of competences will also be proposed.
This randomised control trial aims to determine the efficacy of a two-week, online compassionate imagery intervention on improving veterinarian mental wellbeing. Participants will be randomly allocated to receive the intervention immediately or after a 10-week study period. Self-report questionnaires will be used at four time points to measure change on a range of psychological variables.
The study is aimed at comparing the differential effects of two widely used standardized meditation programs: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) delivered in a retreat format with a cross-over design in a general population sample of healthy adults.
Objectives: The goal of this study is to understand whether self-knowledge, using the Enneagram, has a long-term impact as a modifying factor of the quality of life, self-compassion and compassion of medical students. Methods: An initial sample of 48 medical students answered, before, immediately after and 9 months after an intervention, an online questionnaire with 6 scales. The intervention group took a self-knowledge and communication course based on the Enneagram. The control group was recruited by matching the sociodemographic variables with the intervention group. The data obtained was subject to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis and qualitative content analysis.
Study Design, Aims, and Population: The present study is a three-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT). The primary aim is to test the relative efficacy of two 8-week online interventions - Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - in promoting diverse university students' social well-being (i.e., reduced loneliness, and enhanced social connectedness and perceived social support) compared to a Waitlist (WL) control group. The secondary aim is to examine the effects of CCT versus MBSR on the mental health of diverse university students compared to the WL group. Mental health is defined in this research as both positive mental health (i.e., happiness, positive emotions, meaning and purpose) and negative mental health (i.e., stress, anxiety, and depression). Additionally, another aim is to enroll 75% students of color and 50% male identifying students, whose social well-being and mental health is currently understudied, to better represent the sociodemographic diversity of the university student population in the literature. Study Rationale: The COVID-19 pandemic triggered widespread disruptions in social connections and relational bonds that robustly support a variety of mental and physical health-protective processes. University students' social well-being may have been especially impacted as universities provide a central context for socialization. At the same time, the pandemic exacerbated a pre-existing rise in cases of mental health conditions in university students. If found effective, online-based CCT and MBSR might serve as scalable psychological interventions to foster social thriving and mental health among diverse university students.
Higher-weight individuals face pervasive weight-related stigma and discrimination in their daily lives. There is conceptual and empirical evidence to suggest that weight stigma contributes to worse physical and psychological health outcomes, mediated by the deleterious psychobiological responses to psychosocial stress. Activating self-soothing emotional states (such as self-compassion) may protect against this psychobiological cascade, conferring resilience to negative social evaluation (such as weight stigma). This proof-of-concept study aims to establish the feasibility of an experimental protocol testing whether an acute self-compassion intervention can attenuate the psychobiological stress response to induced weight-based social-evaluative threat. Participants will be randomized into either self-compassion intervention or rest control groups. A standard body composition assessment will be used to induce weight stigma among young women who self-identify as "higher-weight." Stress-sensitive biomarkers (i.e., salivary cortisol and heart-rate variability) along with psychological indices of self-conscious emotions will be used to quantify the psychobiological stress response. This novel pilot study will contribute to efforts to understand the psychobiological processes by which self-compassion facilitates adaptive responding to acute stress, and will help inform future tests of interventions focused on mitigating the harmful health effects of social stigma.
The proposed study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) that takes place at Brigham Young University's (BYU) Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The proposed study follows from the CAPS open trial which led to revisions of the compassion-focused therapy (CFT) protocol authored by Paul Gilbert. In essence, the study is taking existing evidence-based group treatments offered at CAPS, and comparing patient outcomes in a systematic manner. The investigators intend to replicate the improvement rates observed in the open trial with the revised CFT protocol and ascertain if outcomes are comparable to members who receive treatment-as-usual-TAU CAPS groups and those receiving CFT. Hypotheses: 1. Group members attending a 12-session CFT group will have higher levels of compassion and self-reassurance as well as lower levels of self-criticism (and self-hate), fears of compassion, shame, and psychiatric distress when compared to members attending the parallel TAU groups. 2. Amount of change in compassion, self-reassurance, self-criticism (and self-hate), fears of compassion, and shame will be comparable for CFT measures authored by Dr. Gilbert as measures developed by independent compassion researchers. 3. There will be comparable levels of change in general psychiatric distress, as measured by the Outcome Questionnaire -45 (OQ-45), in members attending CFT and TAU groups. However, there will be greater change in members attending CFT groups on measures of compassion. 4. CFT will lead to lower levels of internalized shame through the mechanisms of fear reduction and increases in the 3 flows of compassion.
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and the associated government-imposed isolationary lockdowns, has led to a mental health crisis on a global scale. Empirical studies have reported a drastic increase in mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, increased loneliness and feelings of disconnectedness from others, while resilience levels have been negatively affected, indicating an urgent need for intervention. The current study study is embedded in a larger study, the CovSocial study (www.covsocial) which focused in its first phase on evaluating the longitudinal changes in vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The present second phase of this CovSocial study will seek to investigate the efficacy of brief online mindfulness-based and socio-emotional interventions in reducing mental health problems, and enhancing psychological resilience, social competencies and social cohesion. After providing informed consent, participants will be assigned to one of three groups: 1) socio-emotional training group (with Affect Dyads as core exercise), 2) mindfulness-based mental training group (with attention-based mindfulness practices such as Breathing Meditation as core practice), or 3) Retest Control Group (waitlist control).All groups will first undergo a pre-intervention testing phase (pre-test) wherein they will provide a comprehensive baseline measurement which covers psychometric measures (such as questionnaires and behavioral tasks), and biological parameters (saliva samples). During the 10-week intervention period, participants will undergo weekly assessments and daily Ecological Momentary Assessment pre and post the daily exercise practice, using self-report scales and questionnaires delivered through a webapp or mobile app. At the end of the intervention, participants will again undergo an assessment of psychometric measures and biological parameters, same as at pre-intervention time (post-test). In a second portion, the waitlist control group will undergo the socio-emotional intervention and will be tested at post-test II again. Results will reveal the effectiveness of brief online interventions in enhancing mental health and social cohesion outcomes. In addition to examining pre-post intervention-related changes, we will also use the data from the phase 1 of the project to evaluate the impact of trait markers of and the longitudinal changes in vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion on the intervention-related changes in markers of vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion. We will also evaluate the predictive impact of genetic markers of vulnerability, resilience and social cohesion (assessed in phase 1) on intervention-related changes in our variables of interest. The present study will serve as a pilot for future application of scalable, low-cost interventions at a broader level to reduce stress, improve mental health and build resilience in the face of global stressors.
Stories of suffering and struggle are shared continuously through digital formats such as internet videos, news stories, social marketing, and fundraising campaigns. Digital stories are often created and shared to generate awareness about a problem, impart knowledge on contemporary issues, or promote compassion. The practice of sharing critical life events and insights provided by these experiences are valuable for tellers and the listeners alike for catharsis, healing, reconciliation, and connectiveness. Portrayals of mental suffering are a matter of cultural and social interest as new media products become available to the public. Studies published since the 1990s overwhelmingly conclude that formal media depictions are biased, promoting the stereotype that people who suffer emotionally are mentally ill, dangerous, violent, or insane. Various agencies, organizations, and corporations are actively working to provide alternative stories/narratives to mainstream media by means of video testimonials in social marketing and fundraising campaigns and, ultimately, by taking advantage of the Internet. The impact of this work is under-researched. However, preliminary evaluations of social marketing campaigns report mixed results and raise questions about their effectiveness. As well, the first-person narrative prepared digitally and shared online is also providing alternative narratives to mainstream media stories. People are increasingly using digital videos to share their stories, viewing this as an opportunity to understand their emotions and thoughts, come to terms with disgrace around sensitive, personal issues and marginalization while providing hope and encouragement to others. This proposed study focuses on the process of creating digital narratives/stories, especially stories of mental and emotional suffering, and their impact in terms of inciting empathy, compassion, and good citizenship among viewers.
The aim is to investigate whether an internet-based compassion course of five modules contributes to reducing stress of conscience and work-related stress, increase the experience of professional quality of life and self-compassion in healthcare professionals.
