Filter by:The transition period to full oral feeding in infants with perinatal asphyxia is important in predicting long-term outcomes. The transition to independent oral feeding is accepted as a discharge criterion by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the long transition from tube feeding to oral feeding prolongs the discharge process. Prolonged transition to oral feeding increases maternal stress as it delays gastrointestinal problems, mother-infant interaction and attachment, as well as increasing health expenditures. Due to long-term feeding tube use; Infection, leakage, delay in wound healing, trauma caused by repeated placement, as well as oral reluctance are observed. In asphyxia infants, in whom oral-motor dysfunction is common, the transition to oral feeding takes a long time and tube feeding support is required. The effect of hypothermia, which is a general therapeutic intervention that reduces the risk of mortality and morbidity in infants with asphyxia, on oral feeding has been previously studied and shown to have a positive effect. They also found that MR imaging in infants with asphyxia and the need for gastrostomy and tube feeding in those with brainstem involvement were associated. Various interventions that affect the transition to oral nutrition positively and shorten the discharge time are included in the literature. Stimulation of non-nutritive sucking (NNS) is the most frequently preferred method among these interventions. It has been shown in studies that there are no short-term negative effects of NNS stimulation with the help of a pacifier or gloved finger, and some clinical benefits such as better bottle feeding performance, acceleration of discharge and transition to oral feeding. The effect of the NNS stimulation method, which has been shown to be effective in preterm infants with large-scale randomized controlled studies, is not known exactly. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of NNS stimulation applied to oral feeding, feeding skills, weight gain and discharge in asphyxia infants receiving hypothermia treatment.
Communication group intervention for individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury based on INSIGHT protocol (Keegan et al, 2020) with roll playing game focus
Approximately a quarter of stroke survivors are of working age, and it is well-known that disabilities caused by stroke can lead to difficulties returning to work. In addition to the economic cost, being out of the workplace due to disability has major psychosocial costs for the individual, causing reduced sense of purpose, quality of life, and standard of living. Communication problems (which can affect reading and writing, as well as producing and understanding speech) are not as visible as other stroke-related problems such as a weak arm or difficulties walking. However, they can cause major problems for returning to work because of the importance of communication across a vast range of work activities, for example as a means to engage with colleagues, to share information in order to solve problems and resolve conflicts, and as a means to ensure health and safety. There has been little research into the effects of communication problems on returning to work after a stroke, so the investigators want to explore this issue. Specifically, the investigators want to find out what helps and what hinders people with communication disorders following a stroke when they attempt to return to work; what information and support is most helpful to them; how this information and support should be given and by whom. The investigators aim to do this by interviewing people across NHS Grampian who have the experience of attempting to return to work with post-stroke communication problems. The investigators will then look at all the interviews together and find the common feelings or experiences that the participants mentioned. The findings will be written up and shared widely with professionals and with stroke survivors. The knowledge gained will help the investigators to plan a programme to help people with these problems to return to work.
This study aimed to provide the validity and reliability of the Indonesian ASQ-3 questionnaires as a screening tool for developmentally delayed children aged less than one year old. This study was divided into 2 phases. The first phase (April-June 2018) included the transcultural adaptation of the ASQ-3 questionnaires for 2 to 12 months age groups from English to Indonesian. The second phase (July- September 2018) included a cross-sectional study of Indonesian ASQ-3 questionnaires for parents/caregivers of children aged 1-12 months, with 35 children in each age group by cluster sampling methods, in 2 district areas in East Jakarta.
Parents of children with haemophilia will be invited to complete 3 questionnaires to look for traits present in ASD. With consent teacher will complete a further 2 questionnaires. If all 3 questionnaires are above threshold, then with consent of the family the child will be referred for further investigation. There are already pre-existing children with ASD who will be exempt from the study, but included in the data analysis of prevalence. The results of the 3 questionnaires will be used to identify a profile of social communication in children with haemophilia.
The purpose of this study is to assess subjects with muscle tension dysphonia for perceived effort and acoustic effects of gargle phonation compared to baseline and a sham water swallow.
One of the greatest hurdles in the transition of transgender persons is that voice, speech and communication are not congruent with the desired gender. Since hormone treatment does not affect the voice in male-to-female transgender persons (trans women), speech therapy is the treatment of choice to develop a more feminine communication. Speech therapy must focus on aspects of communication that play an important role in listener perceptions of the speakers gender. Results of a systematic review and meta-analysis showed that those aspects are primarily fundamental frequency of the voice and resonance. However, effectiveness studies of speech interventions in transwomen are extremely limited and show methodological limitations. The purpose of this project is to investigate the short-term and longterm impact of speech exercises for pitch and resonance on (a) acoustic voice characteristics, (b) listener perceptions of femininity using a visual analogue scale and binary gender identification (male versus female voice), and (c) self-perception and psychosocial functioning in trans women using a randomized sham-controlled trial and cross-over design.
Stroke survivors face a range of mental health challenges adjusting post-stroke. There is a lack of treatment options and clinical psychologist workforce to deliver support. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been used successfully in clinical services to improve wellbeing. The investigators worked with stroke survivors, health care professionals and researchers to co-develop group ACT therapy, specifically for stroke survivors, to be delivered using video calling (Zoom). Staff training and supervision programmes were also developed to equip Stroke Association workforce (paraprofessionals) to deliver ACT. The current study will recruit and train up to 10 professionals with some experience of supporting stroke survivors but no experience of ACT. We then aim to recruit up to 30 stroke survivors in the community who are at least 4 months post-stroke and experiencing distress adjusting to their stroke. The investigators aimed to make everything accessible for people with mild/moderate difficulties with thinking and communicating. Recruitment took place across England, over a 6 month period. The study will test how feasible and acceptable it is to deliver the co-developed, remote ACT intervention to stroke survivors, as well as the feasibility of collecting outcomes data: 1. Participants will be invited to consent to complete online measures of well-being every 3 months for up to 12 months (taking around 20 minutes), with the option to participate in group intervention. Those who don't opt for groups will not be treated but will be followed up about their wellbeing, if they agree. 2. Those who opt to attend groups will be randomly assigned into intervention groups A, B, or C and receive the ACT intervention, involving 9 weekly sessions and homework. Data will be collected on how successfully the groups are delivered and how acceptable they are / how to improve them, through online surveys, feedback questionnaires and interviews. UPDATE May 2023: The investigators had initially intended to run an active comparator arm of social support and randomly allocated people to arms *and* groups. However, the design changed after the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that the planning phases took longer than expected in order to pivot all study components to be deliverable online. *Please see references section for our findings and publications
The aim of the study is to observe the effects of speech therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy in patients who develop anomic aphasia after stroke. Patients meeting the inclusion criteria will be randomly divided into groups. In the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment group, a total of 10 sessions, 1 session per day, will be applied to the right inferior frontal gyrus area with a frequency of 1 Hz for 20 minutes. The control group patients will be given speech therapy in the same way, but no active magnetic stimulation will be given in rTMS sessions (sham application). Speech therapy will be given to each patient by the same physiotherapist, and the treatment will last a total of 10 days, 60 minutes a day. Minimental test (MMT), Ege aphasia test, aphasia quality of life scale (SAQOL-39) will be filled in to the patients before and after the treatment.
There has been limited research in the area of speech and language therapy awareness in Pakistan. The study aims to assess the efficacy of providing speech therapy awareness in private schools through a pre-post model. This Quasi experimental study will be a means of reaching out to schools and directly create awareness regarding the field and its scope. Pre-assessment will be carried out and after which a 45 minutes presentation will be conducted face to face or through a webinar as per school directives. The results will be analysed quantitatively and pre-post assessment of the participants will be measured.
