Filter by:Background: Frailty is a complex multi-dimensional state of increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes and is usually associated with older age but there is growing evidence of accelerated ageing and frailty in non-geriatric populations, including those experiencing socio-economic deprivation and extreme social exclusion, such as people experiencing homelessness. Addiction, as a coping mechanism for prior trauma, is common among people who are homeless and can have a gendered dimension. Women experiencing homelessness and addiction have unique needs which require a gendered approach. The aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness of an exercise intervention to target the known physical functioning deficits and frailty which this population experiences. Methods: This mixed-methods study will explore physical functioning deficits and frailty in women experiencing homelessness and addiction, using a bespoke test battery and an exercise intervention. Physical function (10m Walk Test, 2 Minute Walk Test, Single Leg Stance Test, Chair Stand Test, hand grip dynamometry), frailty (Clinical Frailty Scale and the SHARE-FI) and nutritional status (Mini-Nutritional Status), pain (Numerical Pain Rating Scale) and quality of life (SF 12-V2) will be evaluated. The intervention will involve a 3-times weekly exercise programme with protein supplementation for 10 weeks. Following this, qualitative interviews, which will be thematically analysed using Braun & Clarke methodology, will be conducted. This study will be conducted in Dublin from February to July 2024. Discussion: Little is kn own about frailty-focussed interventions in women experiencing homelessness and addiction. This proposed study will help to increase the knowledge base regarding the physical health burden and frailty experienced by this extremely vulnerable population and will deliver a targeted intervention with a gendered dimension to mitigate its affects. The findings of this research will help narrow this research gap and will guide clinicians and policy makers to implement unique gender-based treatment strategies for this population.
Determine the nursing care needs of the elderly population sample according to the self-care deficits identified using the "Self-Care of Chronic Illness Inventory - Patient Version (version 4)" in elderly population living in their own homes or in the homes of relatives or friends in the district of Évora.
Since 2017, ALD patients can be prescribed Adapted Physical Activity (APA) on prescription. However, this possibility of prescription remains relatively unknown and little used by doctors, while the benefits of APA in particular in chronic diseases are well established and 30% of adults in France do not reach the recommendations of WHO on physical activity. These obstacles to prescription are well known thanks to studies on the subject (lack of information on Sport-Health networks, lack of training in APA prescription, poor financial support, lack of support for deliver to patients). To overcome this lack of implementation, the city of Amiens, via the Office des Sports d'Amiens Métropole (OSAM), has implemented since September 2022 tools to help prescribe APA: blocks pre- filled certificates of absence of contraindication and prescription of adapted physical activity. In other areas of health, such as breastfeeding, performing motivational interviewing has improved patient compliance. Patients with chronical disease consult a doctor from the Amiens metropolitan area recruited beforehand who informs them of the existence of the physical activity promotion program of Amiens Métropole. After obtaining their consent and establishing a certificate of no contraindication, the patients will be randomized by a random draw into two groups: motivational interviewing (ME) and control group (GT). Upon entry into the program, all patients will be seen for an assessment of their physical condition at the premises of Amiens Métropole by a teacher in adapted physical activity (APA) in order to be assessed and directed to a club or a approved associations. The EM group will also benefit from a motivational interview at 0 and 3 months by a doctor trained in the technique. The entire cohort will complete the SF12 (perception of quality of life) and IPAQ (current level of physical activity) questionnaires at 0 and 6 months during the usual appointments with the APA teacher.
- Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) can accelerated the aging process and increase the frailty condition - The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is the gold standard in the geriatric clinical context - Recently, in Italy the first Guidelines about the CGA in different settings for older people has been pubblicated - The CGA can identify older people at high risk of frailty who can benefit from a personalized prevention program - No studies has been investigated the effects of a personalized prevention program (PPP) based on the CGA in a primary care setting - The main hypothesis is that the CGA assessment can result in personalized prevention programs for older subjects in primary care settings with an effect in reducing the hospitalization rate and can be related to the biological paramters in NCDs
The goal of this observational study is to learn about the impact of long COVID on people who have multiple (two or more) pre-existing long-term conditions (such as diabetes and asthma). The main question it aims to answer is: • How does long COVID impact the lives of adults living with multiple pre-existing long-term conditions and what are their rehabilitation needs? Participants will be asked to: - Take photos of things they feel represent the impact of long COVID on their day-to-day lives across seven days and, - Take part in an interview to discuss the impact of long COVID.
Conduct a pilot study (n = 20) to explore the feasibility and acceptability of the MAJOR CHORD music therapy (MT) intervention (i.e., two in-person MT sessions prior to discharge and two virtual MT sessions post-discharge) and collection of patient-reported outcomes through 30 days after hospital discharge. The investigators will uncover any potential modifications that need to be made to the intervention and data collection process prior to initiating the randomized trial.
This is a pilot non-randomized-controlled trial to evaluate the impact of "Tomando control de su salud", an evidenced-based intervention for chronic disease self-management in the quality of life of patients living with Long-COVID in Puerto Rico.
It is important for healthcare professionals to be sensitive to the needs of patients undergoing urinary catheterization. Patients and their relatives should be educated, guided and supported by nurses and other healthcare professionals. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of education given to patients with urinary catheterization on urinary catheter self-care management and urinary tract infection status. is planned as an experimental research.
Accidental falls in older adults are one of the world's major pubic health problem, because of their strong association with injuries and mortality rates. In Quebec, falls are responsible for a high rate of hospitalization (more than 1800 emergency department visits every day) and deaths (more than 10,000 in recent years). Preventing falls is therefore a key mission for health professionals. This research program aims to develop a new clinical approach to the rehabilitation management of the older with a neuro-musculoskeletal disorder and a risk of falling. This program is part of a new partnership project between UQAC and specialized geriatric services at the CIUSSS Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (La Baie site). These geriatric services admit more than 400 new patients per year, representing a large pool of participants for the new program's development. Specifically, this program has 4 phases: 1) Create a clinical profile of patients in rehabilitation care from specialized geriatric services (ex: reasons for consultation, neuro-musculoskeletal disorders, rates and causes of falls, etc.); 2) to diagnose functional deficits of these patients on different dimensions of functional and physical evaluations, using standardized tests and high-tech instruments (ex: platform of force); 3) determine the effectiveness of a new exercise intervention program (OTAGO) for falls prevention; and 4) Measure client and professional team satisfaction as well as long-term impact of this new approach used to prevent falls. The most significant impact of this new program will be to reduce public health expenditure for care of older adults with balance disorder and risk for falls; and therefore, be implanted in other CIUSSS institutions from Quebec.
This study is a longitudinal cohort study that follows participants in a randomized clinical trial of a program of prenatal and early child home visiting on maternal and offspring risks for chronic disease.
