Physical Activity of Asthmatic Children

Physical activity is mandatory to the optimal development and health of children. The presence of asthmatic manifestations may influence the comportment of children and its family toward exercise and practice of sports. There no scientific argument to advice a reduction of physical activity in asthmatic children, but previous studies showed that physical activity is reduced in asthmatic children. The aim of this observational study is to evaluate the existing factors leading to this reduction of physical activity in asthmatic children and their families.

The use of antibiotics has saved millions of human lives, however consumption of antibiotics can select for antibiotic resistant organisms and may lead to changes in commensal microbiome. This study is designed to estimate the effect of antibiotic consumption on microbiome in a rural region of rural Burkina Faso. Changes in the intestinal and nasopharyngeal microbiome and resistome following a short course of antibiotics will be measured.

Parent-child Relationship Among Low-income Families in Hong Kong

This is a prospective cohort study building upon the existing cohort study on the effectiveness of the Trekkers Family Enhancement Scheme. This study will sample 200 low-income parent-child pairs and follow them up for 24 months with yearly assessment on parental stress and child health using both subjective measures and objective physiological parameters. Additional data on parenting style, neighbourhood cohesion, child physical assault and neglect potential, parental mental health and HRQOL and family disharmony will also be collected at each assessment time point for testing mediating and moderating mechanisms between parental stress and child health. The baseline assessment will be carried out in 2016-17 with three repeated assessments after 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months.

Mechanism of Allogeneic UCB Therapy in Cerebral Palsy

In our prior study on the therapeutic mechanism of UCB, changes in cytokine levels were observed but the results are inconclusive and further studies on animal models and changes of protein expression before and after UCB therapy in the clinical settings are required. The changes in protein expression will be assessed by multiplex RT-PCR mRNA assay. Clinical efficacy of UCB therapy will be evaluated with various functional assessment tools. Factors regarding UCB therapy (number of transplanted cells, HLA matching status, serum level of immunosuppressant, etc.) and patient factors (age, functional status, etc.) will be analyzed for correlation with protein expression after UCB therapy. Several target proteins for analysis are available. Pentraxin and toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 are receptors modulating intrinsic immune reaction and was shown to have a significant correlation with clinical efficacy of stem cell therapy. Ubiquitine is a regulatory protein that combines with the target protein and affects its degradation, interaction, localization and activation. The ubiquitine system controls total protein quantity for homeostasis and can be found in all tissues. Deubiquitination (DUB) enzyme down-regulates this ubiquitine and is known to modulate all cellular changes

Flavour Programming: Fruit and Vegetable Palatability

Infants have an inborn preference for sweet and umami flavours and dislike sour and bitter, but there is evidence that sensory experiences beginning early in development can modify these preferences in favour ultimately of healthier food choices. Babies are first exposed to flavour in utero and then later through breast/formula milk. This can be manipulated to influence liking and consumption of individual foods with specific high-intensity flavours postnatally. There are no prospective studies evaluating the impact of increasing maternal fruit and vegetable intake during late pregnancy on a child's subsequent acceptance of fruit and vegetables, particularly those with a sour/bitter taste. The hypothesis is that an intervention to increase maternal intake of fruit and vegetables in late pregnancy will enhance fetal flavour exposure and make infants more likely to accept a wide variety of fruit and vegetables in childhood. Before testing this hypothesis, the investigators need to evaluate the general acceptance and taste profile of the fruit and vegetable formats that we intend to offer to pregnant women.

Promoting Children's Mental Health: The Effects of a Parenting Program

The objectives of the How-to parenting program are 1) to improve optimal parenting style, and 2) to foster children mental health (i.e. decrease in internalized and externalized problems, and well-being). The investigators expect that parents assigned to experimental groups will show improvements in parenting over time (i.e improvements in parental affiliation, parental structure and parental attitude toward autonomy), whereas parents in control groups will not show such improvements (i.e., stable or declining parenting quality). The investigators also expect children of parents in experimental groups to experience improvements in child mental health (i.e., fewer internalized and externalized psychological problems and increased well-being), whereas children whose parents are on the wait list will not show improvements over time (i.e., stable or deteriorating mental health and well-being).
