Filter by:Various studies have worked on the sitting balance of cerebral palsy (CP) with Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level I-III with a sample greater than 30, there is no data available to compare the effect of a balance board and perceptual motor therapy to improve sitting in GMFCS level IV and V with a sample greater than 30. This study will add the authenticity to literature with a large sample size and affect the severity of the condition.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and begin to evaluate the effect of an intensive in-home standing and walking intervention for infants with or at high risk of cerebral palsy.
It is unclear why humans typically swing their arms during gait. To date, the debate on how to arm swing comes about (i.e. whether it is caused by accelerations of the shoulder girdle or muscular activity) is still going on. There needs to be consensus on whether the arm swing is actively controlled or merely passive and on why humans swing their arms during walking (i.e. what the purpose of arm swing is, if any). Suggested reasons include minimising energy consumption, optimising stability, and optimising neural control. Pathologies such as hemiplegia after stroke, Parkinson's disease, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury, and Multiple Sclerosis may directly affect arm swing during gait. Emerging evidence indicates that including arm movements in gait rehabilitation may be beneficial in restoring interlimb coordination and decreasing energy expenditure. This project hypothesises that the arms swing, at least at low and intermediate walking speeds, reflects the body's Center of Mass (CoM) accelerations. Arm swing may thus depend mainly upon the system's intrinsic mechanical properties (e.g., gravity and inertia). In this perspective, the CoM is seen as moving relative to the upper limbs rather than the other way around. The contribution of major lower limb joints, in terms of power injected into the body motion, will be simultaneously explored. The study aims to investigate the mechanism and functions of arm swinging during walking on a force treadmill. To simulate asymmetric walking, healthy subjects will be asked to walk with a toes-up orthosis to induce claudication and asymmetry in ankle power. In this way, it will be possible to highlight the correlation among arm swinging, ankle power, and the acceleration of the CoM in a 3D framework. In addition, subjects affected by unilateral motor impairments will be asked to walk on the force treadmill to test the experimental model and highlight significant differences in the kinematic parameters of the upper limbs. The question of whether arm swing is actively controlled or merely passive and the relationship between arm swinging and the total mechanical energy of the CoM will be faced. Asymmetric oscillations of the upper limb will be related to dynamic asymmetries of the COM motion, and of the motion of lower limbs. In addition, cause-effect relationships will be hypothesized. Finally, the dynamic correlates of upper limb oscillations will make the clinical observation an interpretable clinical sign applicable to rehabilitation medicine. Results from the present study will also foster the identification of practical rehabilitation exercises on gait asymmetries in many human nervous diseases.
Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) is a leading cause of childhood disability. An early brain injury impairs the upper extremity function, bimanual coordination, and impacts the child's independence. The existing therapeutic interventions have higher training doses and modest effect sizes. Thus, there is a critical need to find an effective priming agent to enhance bimanual skill learning in children with UCP. This study aims to determine the effects of a novel priming agent, remote ischemic conditioning (RIC), when paired with bimanual skill training to enhance bimanual skill learning and to augment skill dependent plasticity in children with UCP.
The 40-68% of ambulating hemiplegic children walk with genu recurvatum and hemiplegic patients shows excessive anterior pelvic tilts (>4 cm) during the stance phase. The objective of the study is to compare the effects of inclined backward treadmill walk vs kneel walk on genu recurvatum in hemiplegic cerebral palsy. 50 participants will be chosen according to inclusion exclusion criteria of the study which will be randomly allocated into two equal groups . One group will receive treadmill training programme with specifically designed physical therapy program according to child need for one hour for each child. And other group will receive kneel walking programme specifically designed physical therapy program according to child need for one hour for each child. The pre and post assessment of genurecurvatum will be assessed by Goniometer.
CHildren of Cerebral Palsy(CP) are at high risk of developing dental diseases most commonly periodontitis and caries. Neuromuscular and psychological impact makes it difficult for the CP child to clean dental plaque from the surface of the teeth.inability to perform coordinated movements too makes brushing very difficult and hence it worsens the oral hygiene status. Hence the objective of the study is to assess plaque removal efficacy of powered toothbrush versus manual toothbrush evaluated by improvement in oral hygiene status of patients with Cerebral Palsy CP children who meet inclusion exclusion criteria will be assessed at different time intervals via Oral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S), plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) Scores will be compared and analyzed from baseline, after first phase and after second phase of interventions.
Parents of children with medical complexity (CMC) are suffering from high level of stress. These CMC get multisystem diseases, including severe neurologic conditions or cancer, resulting in potential premature death. They experience one or more physical and psychological symptoms at one time, which seriously affect their quality of life and increase their health services utilization. Parents may lack confidence in their abilities when managing their child's symptoms. Literature suggested that increasing parental self-efficacy in managing their child's symptoms could improve child's health status. Home-based nursing services for the CMC and parents are available in Hong Kong. However, the service faces challenges because of serious nursing workforce shortage and the recent coronavirus pandemic. Nurse parental support in symptom management using a proactive mobile health App is an alternative method considered more feasible to continue home-based support for the CMC and parents. This proposed RCT will test the effects of a nurse-led mobile App for enhancing parental self-efficacy in symptom management for CMC. A repeated-measures, two-group design will be used to evaluate the effects between intervention and wait-listed control groups by comparing the study group receiving nurse support using a mobile App, and the wait-listed control group receiving usual community care for 96 randomly selected parents over a three-month follow-up. Primary outcome is parental self-efficacy. Secondary outcomes include children's symptom burden and health services utilization. These factors will be measured before intervention, immediately after intervention and three-month after intervention. The effectiveness of the intervention will be evaluated by comparing the primary outcome at three-month after intervention across the two study groups using ANCOVA with control for the pre-test value of parental self-efficacy. Generalized estimating equation will be used to address secondary objectives regarding the effectiveness of the mobile App as compared to the control on secondary outcomes from T1 to T3 with appropriate link function. It is hypothesized that nurse support using the mobile App is more effective than usual community care in enhancing parental self-efficacy in symptom management for their CMC at three-month after intervention.
The study purpose is to document the typical trajectory of perioperative pain experience in Cerebral Palsy (CP) and to identify important predictive factors for the development of chronic postsurgical pain. The main aims of the investigators are to: 1. Quantify the trajectory of pain and opioid use in the context of orthopedic surgery in children with CP. 2. Identify predictors for CPSP in children with CP and develop an applicable risk index. 3. Examine relationships between perioperative pain severity and functional/mobility outcomes achieved by orthopedic surgery in children with CP. Participants will complete: 1. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility, fidelity and acceptability of an aquatic therapy assessment and intervention for children ages 3-9 with neuromotor deficits such as cerebral palsy. The intervention takes place in a warm water therapy pool, twice a week for ten weeks and targets swim safety skills, upper extremity function and self care participation and performance.
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between lower extremity selectivity and gait in children with cerebral palsy. 32 volunteer children with CP between the ages of 5-20 will participate in the study. The Selective Control Assessment of the Lower Extremity (SCALE) questionnaire will be used to assess lower extremity selectivity, and the Edinburgh observational gait scale will be used to assess gait. Both assessments are observational.
