Filter by:Parent caregivers of children with chronic conditions who require life-saving technology such as mechanical ventilation or feeding tubes must maintain a high level of vigilance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They usually provide a majority of their children's care and are often overwhelmed by the caregiving demands thus neglect health promotion behaviors that result in a deterioration of their own mental and physical health. The goal of this study is to test a cognitive-behavioral resourcefulness intervention that will improve these caregivers' mental and physical health and health promotion behaviors while they continue to provide vital care for these vulnerable children.
Introduction: There is an increase on cancer prevalence and, consequently, a higher number of people that require palliative care, making an influence on the family and the main carer. Objectives: - To evaluate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of a music intervention program, applied as a complementary therapy, in oncological palliative care patients and carers at home, compared to current treatment. - To assess if patients in the intervention group submit significant differences regarding: pain, anxiety, depression, modo, insomnia, and life quality. - To assess if carers in the intervention group present significant differences regarding the Caregiver Burden Scale and life quality. - To evaluate patients and carers satisfaction on the therapeutic intervention. - To estimate the cost-effectiveness of the intervention. Method: Randomised, double-blind, multi-centre clinical trial in the field of primary health care, conducted in 5 clinical management units belonging to Málaga-Guadalhorce health district and performed in oncological palliative care patients and carers. Two samples of 40 palliative care patients and two samples of 41 carers. The intervention group will undergo a 7-days intervention with music sessions, the control group will be given seven sessions of retraining in therapeutical education. Objectives will be evaluated through the following tools: Edmonton Scale, Symptom Assessment System, EORTC QLQ-C30, Caregiver Burden Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Accelerometer, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), The Quality of Life Family Version, Client Satisfaction Questionnaire and Economical valuation. To assess the objectives evaluations will be performed through home visit, both pre-intervention and a week after the beginning of the intervention for both groups. A follow-up visit will be made a month after the intervention to regard some economical parameters. Statistical analysis: The basal values of both groups will be compared. These values will be compared before and after the intervention, in the control and intervention group through Student t-test for normal continuous variables, and through Wilcoxon t-test for paired data in not normal continuous variables. In addition to the bivariated analysis, a multiple lineal regression will be carried out. The economical valuation will be a cost-effectiveness analysis. For each group we will measure cost, incremental cost, AVAC effectiveness, incremental effectiveness, dominance and, in case there is none, the results will be expressed in terms of incremental cost-effectiveness. To assess the costs, direct sanitary costs and intervention related costs will be considered. SPSS 23 will be the statistical software to use, along with Epidat 3.01. 95% confidence range will make p values under 0,05 (p<0.05) statistically significant.
This is a pilot cluster randomized trial that tests the effect of a novel intervention that trains hospice staff to 1. regularly review, simplify, and align patients' prescribed medications with their goals of care as their illness progresses, and 2. support family caregivers with education that empowers them to understand each medication's use, develop skills for safe administration, and 3. understand when stopping medications may be beneficial.
Heart failure (HF) patients with supportive caregivers have better physical health, emotional health, and quality of life. But caregivers have an increased risk of caregivers' own worsening health and often feel a sense of burden related to caregiving. However, caregivers receive very little support to balance caring for the patient with caring for themselves. Therefore, this research will provide a program for caregivers of advanced heart failure patients to build on the caregiver's strengths, sense of purpose, and set goals for healthy lifestyle changes. The investigators believe that caregivers who receive the program will have better quality of life, less sense of burden, and a healthier lifestyle.
This research study seeks to understand how stress reduction training influences caregiver well-being, sleep, and physiological responses to stress. All participants are caregivers of persons with dementia. Participants will complete a 14-day, online stress-reduction intervention which involves approximately 25-30 minutes of daily practice.
Although there have been a small number of studies suggesting the important role that caregivers play in assisting wheelchair users with mobility, there has never been a randomized controlled trial (RCT) looking at the effectiveness or cost-utility of wheelchair skills training for caregivers. The overall goal of this study is to correct this knowledge gap and, triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, to conduct the training remotely. The main purpose of this study is to test if providing wheelchair skills training remotely to caregivers of manual wheelchair users enhances caregiver-assisted wheelchair skills ability and confidence in comparison to a control group of participants who are receiving usual care and self-study material on wheelchair skills. The investigators will also study whether the benefits of training are still seen at a 6-week follow-up and assess the health-economic impact of caregiver training.
This study aims to develop a mobile app for caregivers and tests its feasibility for a period of 8 weeks. A mixed-method study design with both qualitative and quantitative components will be used. A maximum of 36 caregivers will be involved in the six focus groups. Each focus group interview will involve 6 caregivers of persons with dementia. Another 30 caregivers will be involved in the 8-week trial use of the app. Each focus group interview will last for about 1.5 hours, facilitated by a moderator. Before and after the 8-week trial use of the app, four outcome measures (Zarit Burden Interview, Self-rated Health, Patient Health Questionnaire, and Modified Medical Outcome Study Social Support Survey) will be taken. This study will provide evidence of the feasibility of the use of the newly developed app among caregivers.
This study will test whether transitional care targeting care needs of seriously ill, skilled nursing facility (SNF) patients and their caregivers will help to improve SNF patient outcomes (preparedness for discharge, quality of life, function and acute care use) and caregiver outcomes (preparedness for the caregiving role. caregiver burden and caregiver distress).
The purpose of this research is to examine the efficacy of telehealth as a delivery format for an education-based caregiver wellness program focusing on self-care. The study will examine two research questions. 1) Are outcomes equivalent for caregivers in an education based-wellness program delivered via telehealth and one delivered in person as measured by a general rating of health, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale - Revised (CESD-R), self-care behaviors (health self-care neglect, frequency of stress management and relaxation activities, and exercise frequency), self-efficacy, use of community resources, and the Bakas Caregiving Outcomes Scale (BCOS)? 2) Is class attendance equivalent for classes delivered via telehealth and in person? This research involves a specific education-based caregiver wellness program called Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC). PTC is an evidence-based six-week program that addresses caregiver health by promoting self-care. Collaborating community organizations offer the program at little to no cost. This study will employ a quasi-experimental nonequivalent pretest-posttest design to compare outcomes from in-person to telehealth delivered PTC classes. PTC classes are conducted by a pair of class leaders who model concepts. Each pair of class leaders will conduct both a telehealth and in-person PTC class. Collaborating community organizations will recruit 105 caregivers to attend PTC classes delivered by 7 pairs of class leaders. Telehealth classes will use VSee software to allow caregivers to participate in the PTC program synchronously via secure videoconferencing from their own home. VSee is a free software program designed to deliver secure telehealth services. Class leaders will guide participants in installation of the software on their home computer. Participants will undergo assessment one week before and one week after the PTC program, and at six-month follow up. Outcome measures replicate previous PTC research and add additional outcomes meaningful to caregiver wellness. Statistical analysis will include descriptive statistics and a mixed design analysis of variance including repeated measures to examine differences in the variables of interest over time.
The objective of this project is to study the influence of mindfulness meditation on psychological health (stress level, affects, emotions) and physical health parameters (rate of inflammatory markers in the blood, activity of white blood cells involved in immuno-inflammation) in caregivers of people with psychiatric disorders. This study will provide the objective scientific data required for the development of mindfulness meditation programs for psychiatric caregivers. 80 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the following two groups: - 40 participants in the "Mindfulness" group who will attend mindfulness meditation sessions in addition to their standard follow-up - 40 participants in the "Control" group who will have a standard follow-up The duration of participation is 12 months and includes 3 visits and 8 mindfulness-based meditation sessions for the "Mindfulness" group.
