RATIONALE: A program that includes bupropion may be more effective in helping early-stage lung cancer patients to quit smoking. It is not yet known if a program to quit smoking is more effective with or without bupropion. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of a program to quit smoking with or without bupropion in treating patients who have undergone surgery for stage I or stage II non-small cell lung cancer.

Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Thalidomide may stop the growth of non-small cell lung cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor. It is not yet known if combination chemotherapy plus radiation therapy is more effective with or without thalidomide.

The anti-cancer properties of Antineoplaston therapy suggest that it may prove beneficial in the treatment of Stage IV lung cancer PURPOSE: This study is being performed to determine the effects (good and bad) that Antineoplaston therapy has on patients with Stage IV lung cancer.
