Breast MRI as a Preoperative Tool for DCIS

Breast MRI is a fairly new technology, but it has been well studied. It is now used routinely in many patients with breast cancer. It has been shown to be useful in detecting areas of cancer that cannot be seen using other types of scans or tests. The purpose of this study is to see how often MRI can find other areas of cancer in women with one area of breast cancer, and to determine how having the MRI test affects their treatment. The purpose is also to study any areas of abnormality seen on your MRI with special methods that allow the images of your breast tissue and the microscopic analysis of your breast tissue to be compared very carefully. The study also aims to follow women who enter the study over a 10-year period to determine how often the breast cancer comes back.

Molecular Genetic Basis of Invasive Breast Cancer Risk Associated With Lobular Carcinoma in Situ

This study is being done in order to better understand the biology of an abnormal lesion found in breast tissue called "lobular carcinoma in situ" (LCIS). We are interested in studying LCIS. The LCIS is not a cancer itself, but is a marker for an increased risk of cancer. We would like to look for LCIS in breast tissue removed during surgery from patients with cancer or at high risk for cancer. If LCIS is found, we will search for genes that are expressed (turned on or off) differently than in normal breast tissue. The identification of such genes would help us better understand the biology of LCIS, and its possible relationship to breast cancer.

Targeted Intra-Operative Radiotherapy for the Management of Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ of the Breast

We hypothesize that the combination of mammography and CE-MRI will improve the surgeon and radiologist's ability to define extent of disease prior to surgical resection, improve the odds of obtaining clear surgical margins, and increase the efficacy of IORT delivered immediately after initial surgical resection. In this investigation, we will determine whether or not patients deemed eligible for 'immediate" IORT based on mammography and CE-MRI can be successfully treated without the need for re-excision or additional radiotherapy due to inadequate surgical margins.

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer from forming. The use of ACAPHA, a combination of six herbs, may prevent lung cancer from forming in former smokers with bronchial intraepithelial neoplasia. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying the side effects and how well ACAPHA works in preventing lung cancer in former smokers with bronchial intraepithelial neoplasia.
