Simulation-based Low-dose High Frequency (LDHF) Plus Mobile Mentoring (m-Mentoring) Study in Nigeria

The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness and cost of a simulation-based low dose high frequency (LDHF) plus m-Mentoring training versus the traditional group-based training approaches in improving knowledge and skill in maternal and newborn care and to determine trainees' satisfaction with the approaches in Ebonyi and Kogi states. The specific objectives are to: 1. Compare knowledge and skill learning outcomes between the two groups of birth attendants trained through the simulation-based LDHF/m-Mentoring versus group-based training approaches in Kogi and Ebonyi states over 12-months. 2. Assess the trainees' satisfaction with a simulation-based LDHF/m-Mentoring and group-based training approaches in improving skills of birth attendants in the selected facilities in Kogi and Ebonyi state over 12-months. 3. Determine the cost and cost-effectiveness of LDHF/m-Mentoring and group-based training approaches in improving skills of birth attendants in the selected facilities in Kogi and Ebonyi state over 12-months.

Methadone Maintenance and HIV Prevention: A Window of Opportunity in China

This study is an intervention pilot that integrates the current methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) program in China with psychosocial and behavioral components in order to address the critical link between drug use and HIV/AIDS. The intervention pilot proceeds in two phases in Sichuan, China. In Phase 1, we developed the intervention manuals and supporting materials, and finalized assessment measures and implementation procedures. In Phase 2, we conducted an intervention pilot across 6 MMT clinics involving 41 service providers and 179 clients, and followed up at three, six, and nine months.

Integrated Infectious Disease Capacity-Building Evaluation

This evaluation aim is to investigate a cost-effective way to build capacity for the care and prevention of infectious diseases among mid-level practitioners (MLP) in sub-Saharan Africa. Classroom based training continues to be the dominant form of training, despite evidence that suggests that on-site support (OSS) is more beneficial. Definitive evidence that on-site support is the most effective way to deliver the required outputs and related outcomes is still lacking. IDCAP will provide two interventions that integrate training in TB, HIV/AIDS and malaria as well as other infectious diseases, and the effects will be studied: 1) Integrated Management of Infectious Disease (IMID) training program for individual MLP, and 2) On-site support (OSS) for team of health professionals. This study employs a mixed design with pre/post and cluster randomized trial components. Interventions are at the level of the individual participant for IMID and at the level of the site (health facility) for OSS. All participants attend a 3-week course, followed by two 1-week booster courses over a six month period. After the 3-week course, a randomized arm of half the sampled facilities also received OSS every month for 9 months and bi-monthly for 6 additional months.
