Vaporized Cannabis Administration and Co-Administration of Alcohol on Impairment

This human laboratory study will use cognitive, behavioral, and subjective measures to characterize impairment associated with co-use of alcohol and vaporized cannabis. Participants (n=32) will complete 7 double-blind, double-dummy outpatient sessions in randomized order. In each session, participants will self-administer placebo (0 mg THC) or active vaporized cannabis (5 or 25 mg THC, via a handheld vaporizer called the Mighty Medic) and a placebo drink (BAC 0.0%) or alcohol drink calculated to produce a breath alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05%. Participants will also complete a positive control session in which the participant administers placebo cannabis and alcohol at a target BAC of 0.08% (the legal threshold for driving impairment in most U.S. states).

Effects of Cannabis/Alcohol on Driving Performance and Field Sobriety Tests

The overarching aim of this study is to examine the impact of acute cannabis and alcohol administration on driving performance, as well as identify methods for detecting driving under the influence of these substances. One-hundred twenty-five healthy volunteers will be randomized into one of 5 conditions; those who receive 1) low dose alcohol and placebo cannabis, 2) low dose alcohol and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), 3) high dose alcohol and placebo cannabis, 4) placebo alcohol and THC, and 5) double placebo. Cannabis inhaled ad libitum and/or ingested alcohol will take place at the beginning of the day followed by the completion of driving simulations, components of the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluations, and bodily fluid draws (e.g., blood, oral fluid/saliva, breath) over the subsequent 4 hours after ingestion. The purpose of this study is to determine (1) the impact of Δ9-THC on driving performance with and without concurrent alcohol ingestion (2) the duration of driving impairment in terms of hours from initial use, (3) the relationship between performance on the DRE measures and cannabis/alcohol ingestion, and 4) if saliva or expired air can serve as a useful adjunct to the field for blood sampling.

THC + CBD and Memory Study

Memory deficits are one of the most consistently observed cognitive effects of marijuana use. There is evidence that some decrements attributable to the primary psychoactive ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), may be attenuated by cannabidiol (CBD). This study will help us learn more about the relationship between THC and CBD consumption with memory processes. A combination of MRI and neuropsychological tests (which are computer and paper/pencil tasks) will be used to measure the neurocognitive and behavioral impacts of THC and CBD use.

This double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover experiment investigates the acute effects of cannabis (with and without cannabidiol) on subjective effects, behavioural responses and neural functioning in 16-17 year-olds and 26-29 year-olds who regularly use cannabis (0.5-3 days per week).

Cannabis is one of the widely used psychoactive substances in the world. With increasing legalization, the prevalence of driving under the influence of cannabis will undoubtedly rise. At present, roadside detection of cannabis intoxication is largely dependent on drug recognition experts who rely on changes in eye movements when impaired. In this regard, use of eye trackers can help to detect impairment in drivers. The purpose of the present study is to determine the feasibility of the use of eye trackers in detecting impairment in participants who smoked a cannabis cigarette.

The Impact and Detection of Driving Impairments Associated With Acute Cannabis Smoking

This study was authorized by the California Legislature (Assembly Bill 266, the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act to help with detection of driving under the influence of cannabis. One hundred and eighty healthy volunteers will inhale smoked cannabis with either 0% (placebo), 5.9%, or 13.4% Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at the beginning of the day, and then complete driving simulations, iPad-based performance assessments, and bodily fluid draws (e.g., blood, saliva, breath) before the cannabis smoking and a number of times over the subsequent 6 hours after cannabis smoking. The purpose is to determine (1) the relationship of the dose of Δ9-THC on driving performance and (2) the duration of driving impairment in terms of hours from initial use, (3) if saliva or expired air can serve as a useful substitute for blood sampling of Δ9-THC, and (4) if testing using an iPad can serve as a useful adjunct to the standardized field sobriety test in identifying acute impairment from cannabis.
