NCT ID: NCT05332912 Recruiting - Down Syndrome Clinical Trials

Assessing Malleability of Spatial Abilities in Down Syndrome

Start date: April 1, 2021
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Based on available literature and our own preliminary research, the researchers have concluded that persons with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit difficulties in utilizing the specific spatial abilities of mental rotation and perspective taking and performing complex spatial tasks such as wayfinding and environmental learning. A weakness in spatial abilities may have many direct applications to daily life, ranging from activities such as tying shoes to using hand tools and navigating the environment. Spatial abilities also serve as a cognitive foundation for many other complex skills such as solving mathematical problems and using spatial language for giving and receiving directions. Moreover, spatial abilities are used in a variety of specialty jobs such as grocery stocking, packaging, and assembling, which are among the most commonly reported jobs for adults with DS. Hence, a new focus on spatial ability and its modifiability in persons with DS is clearly warranted. The primary goal of the research proposed in this application is to evaluate the malleability of mental rotation and perspective taking in people with DS through providing intentional experience with numerous spatial activities. Two groups of participants will be tested over the course of the project: adolescents and young adults with DS and typically developing (TD) children. Following an initial evaluation of performance on the two abilities, participants will receive up to eight sessions of spatial activity experience utilizing puzzle construction, block building, and computer search tasks. Following the experience sessions, spatial abilities of participants will be re-evaluated. These data will be used to investigate two specific aims. First, the researchers investigate whether spatial abilities of persons with DS can be modified by experience with spatial activities. Second, the researchers investigate whether the degree of modification observed for persons with DS can reduce performance differences between them and TD children. The researchers also consider whether performance on the PPVT, Raven's matrices, and Chronological Age are associated with any benefits from spatial ability experience.

NCT ID: NCT05367102 Recruiting - Parenting Clinical Trials

Supporting Healthy Relationships Program for FRAMEWorks (SHR FRAMEWorks)

FRAMEWorks
Start date: April 1, 2021
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The overarching objective for the Supporting Health Relationships (SHR) program is to create and sustain families in the Bronx by improving relationship skills, improving parenting skills, and improving parental financial support for children. The investigator's local evaluation addresses a research question about the effectiveness of delivering the SHR curriculum virtually: To what extent do couples show improvements in engagement, skills learning, and relationship quality outcomes when receiving the curriculum over Zoom?

NCT ID: NCT05404100 Recruiting - Clinical trials for Aortic Valve Stenosis

Effects of Aortic Valve Replacement on Myocardial T1 Values in Severe Aortic Valve Stenosis

FIBROTIC
Start date: April 1, 2021
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Background: Severe aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the commonest valve disease. Aortic valve replacement (AVR) is primarily indicated when symptoms occur and/or when there is a drop in left ventricular ejection fraction. However, irreversible myocardial damage, such as replacement fibrosis, leads to increased morbidity and mortality despite treatment. Improved patient selection and timely treatment is thus warranted. T1 mapping, a non-invasive method to quantify myocardial fibrosis by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), could be a marker to guide treatment. Aims: To investigate the change of myocardial fibrosis* in AS patients following AVR and if these changes are associated with disease and/or procedural characteristics. Methods: This is an observational clinical trial. Approximately 60 patients with severe AS planned to undergo AVR (either surgical or transcatheter) at Rigshospitalet, Denmark will be included. Participants will undergo CMR before surgery and at a 1-year follow-up. Other assessments include clinical evaluation and blood sampling. The primary end-point is change in T1 values after AVR. Hypotheses and perspectives: The investigators hypothesize that (1) myocardial fibrosis* will regress in patients undergoing AVR as a group, (2) the degree of myocardial fibrosis is positively correlated with the degree of symptoms, (3) the regression of myocardial fibrosis is greater in patients undergoing TAVR compared to SAVR, and (4) the regression of myocardial fibrosis is greater in patients with tricuspid aortic stenosis compared to bicuspid aortic stenosis. Ultimately, T1 mapping is a potential marker for improved patient selection for the timing of AVR. * Estimated by T1 mapping
