Filter by:WaznApp study is a 12-week randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a self-directed behavioral weight-loss intervention targeting employees of an academic institution, using two popular consumer mobile applications for weight loss. The hypothesis is that individuals assigned to the app that provides interactive feedback and proactively motivates engagement in healthy behaviors (eating healthily and being more active) will be significantly better than those who receive the comparison condition (a simple calorie tracking app).
The aim of the study is to test whether wearing a weighted jacket can help improve the balance distortion of patients with neurologic pathologies. The center of mass of the patient will be analyzed in order to determine the direction in which the imbalance is most important. Weights will be placed accordingly in a jacket in order to correct the imbalance. In the experimental group, weights will represent 1.5 to 2% of the patient body mass. In the control group, the investigators will use weights of 200 grams maximum, placed evenly on both sides of the jacket. Patients will wear the jacket for 2 consecutive hours. After wearing the jacket for 2 hours, data similar to those recorded at the beginning of the experiment will be taken again, namely the determination of the center of mass and of the deviations caused by the imbalance. A final series of tests will take place approximately one week after wearing the jacket, to determine if there are any residual effects.
Excessive gestational weight gain is a major public health problem. Traditional face-to-face intervention programs has been shown to be succesful in order to promote healthier weight gains, however, they are time-consuming and expensive. The objectives of this study are to assess whether a 6-month smartphone application can promote healthy gestational weight gain, dietary habits and physical activity in pregnant women.
Purpose: To evaluate the short-term effects of whole-body vibration (WBV), using reciprocating plate technique, on manual ability performance in healthy younger. Material and methods: 38 healthy young volunteers were randomized to WBV group (N=19; 6 men, 13 women; mean age 21, 3.8yrs) or control group (N=19; 6 men, 13 women; mean age 20.5, 3.5yrs). The subjects in the WBV group performed one series of five consecutive repetitions of 60 sec unsynchronised WBV (Zeptoring, Scisen GmbH, Germany; 4 Hz, amplitude 3mm) with a 1-min pause between administrations, three times a week. The controls did not receive any training. Both groups were evaluated at baseline and after intervention, in the Rey Juan Carlos University´s Gait Analysis Laboratory. Four outcome measures of Purdue Pegboard test (PPT): preferred hand (PH), non-preferred hand (NPH), both hands (BH) and assembly (A) was performed baseline and 5 min after intervention.
A large body of research has demonstrated that intensive lifestyle interventions and metformin are effective treatments to prevent or delay diabetes among high-risk adults, yet neither treatment is routinely used in practice. This pilot study will develop and evaluate the Diabetes Risk Education and Communication Trial (DiRECT) intervention, which communicates information about diabetes risk and treatment options for preventing diabetes among primary care patients with prediabetes. Given that 38% of U.S. adults have prediabetes, this project has large potential to impact public health by developing a scalable intervention to promote the use of evidence-based treatments that lower diabetes risk in this population.
As the prevalence and associated healthcare costs of obesity continue to increase, the need for obesity treatments that contribute to weight loss maintenance are needed. Through the functionality of a smart device, telehealth can provide quality healthcare to individuals of different socioeconomic communities, expand healthcare access, as well as reduce overall healthcare costs. This research program will uncover the effects of a 12-week commercially available telehealth-based weight management program (inHealth Medical Services, Inc.) on body weight, blood pressure, and steps.
The purpose of this study was to determine how 12 weeks of health coaching with individualized feedback and education in combination with mobile health devices (a digital wireless body weight scale and wireless activity tracker) influences body weight, waist circumference, physical activity levels, and select blood-borne markers of health (fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and insulin). The individualized health coaching, education, and feedback was delivered by either video conferencing or direct, in-person consultation. All education materials including (i.e. video modules, exercise manuals, nutrition manuals) were designed and compiled by a team of health professionals from (inHealth Medical Services, Inc.). These materials focused on incorporating behavioral principles of self-monitoring, exercise, nutrition, goal setting, and behavior modification. Each participant was randomly assigned into one of two intervention groups (a video conferencing or in-person group) or a control group.
The primary objective of this study is to experimentally test the momentary and more distal psychological effects of daily self weighing as compared to an active control group.
Physical activity is one of the key strategies used by public health agencies to combat the growing burden of obesity and non-communicable diseases. Adults around the world are recommended to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity per week, or a combination of moderate or vigorous activity that results in approximately the same total energy expenditure. However, majority of the population does not meet the physical activity recommendation. As barriers to physical activity, people mostly cite lack of time, self-motivation and confidence in the ability to be physically active. Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG) at Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Norwegian University of Science and Technology recently developed Personal Activity Intelligence (PAI). PAI is a result of research based on the HUNT study where more than 60 000 individuals has been monitored over a period of more than 20 years. The goal is to make PAI the new world standard of activity tracking. PAI is an individual metric that makes sense of measured heart rate data, and significantly reduces the risk of lifestyle related diseases. The purpose of the study is to obtain new knowledge about how the use of PAI is related to body weight.
This study is a randomized controlled trial that compares 3 self-monitoring approaches for weight loss. GoalTracker is a standalone, technology-based intervention using a commercial smartphone app (MyFitnessPal) and email. The investigators hypothesize that the group that delays diet tracking and receives additional intervention components (weekly personalized feedback, skills training, and action plans) will have greater weight loss at the end of the 12-week intervention and at 6-month followup, compared to (a) an intervention group that simultaneously tracks weight and diet for all 12 weeks and receives the same additional components, and (b) a control group that tracks only diet.
